Update:

I've not been able to post lately on here. My life has been taking some pretty hard turns and I'm just getting back on track it seems. The basics have always been a hard one for me, and keeping up with the dance is so frustrating when you can't financially invest in "any" costume gear or shows, classes, etc... I can get to one dance class and do a trade class with a local Egyptian Cabaret Instructor. She's quite the powerful one. Really knows her stuff and really puts the whole Egyptian flare in her movement. All those subtleties only another dancver can catch. She is one of the most strongest people I know and is currently going through kemo (sp?) therapy from Breast Cancer. We hope all will run smoothly for her finish in late November.

For my writing class, I'm writing a 5 paragraph essay on the different stereotypes of "Bellydance", it's history and theory, and how it is objectified. This is a beginning. I will then start my journey through developing an art documentary piece on "Bellydance" and how it has shaped modern peoples' lives all over the world and about intention, power, health, the body, and spirituality behind the dance.

One upcoming show is a student performance with my Tribaret Bellydance class 'Severina' teaches at Gypsy Caravan Studio. It's a real dark, earthy, more sunsual piece. The rest of the show will have a live local middel eastern band with my good friend and mentor, Brenda, a ViolinCellist. There is also a zar, doumbek, guitarist, and oud plyer for the few of us (including myself) who are doing solo's. I maybe able to get the recording of it put on YouTube to share.

I love you all and hope to be dancing with you as son as we can set those travel dates.
Much love and respect,
~Skylar

From the Gilded Serpent review of the Pogonometric Review show in SF with Rachel Brice and others.
http://gildedserpent.com/art35/Firestonebalkanbrice.htm

"Everyone cleared the chairs and there was free dancing - not line dancing, like there would be at a folkdance session, but a crazy and beautiful mishmash of everything from bellydancing to breakdancing. There was an 18-year-old Tribal drag queen in full regalia, including dreads, dancing almost as well as the girls on the stage - and he told me he'd learned it all from watching Rachel's [Brice] DVDs! So much for my "you can't really learn anything from a video" theory. He told me he'd moved down from Seattle the day before to study with Rachel. He sure was fun to dance with - playful and game for anything."

I apologize for the late response to everything.
I've been really working on getting myself together. Dong much Yoga practice and dance. Trying to Trance out more and feel my body. I have had much lack in this. Though these are common topics in the community, I rarely see the action. Mostly, this a projection of myself. I have not felt the effects to the practice, I was not aware, so why would I have any faith. I was too busy procrastinating and the Ego was making all kinds of excuses.
I am reminding myself everyday why I am here and what my purpose is in the community I have built, and the others I am apart of.
If I want change, transformation, I must take pride and be faithful to the practice. Whatever the practice is for you, keep your faith. Practice, Practice, Practice!!!
The rewards are amazing. I feel like I am just starting my journey all over again. I have recently realized how easily I let the rest of the illusions get in the way of my pracice. I jhave only just begun on my journey. I have many paths to tred upon. Maybe I'll see sum 'o Y'all on a few.

I am so grateful and honored to have you all on here, just being, and creating such wonderful, encouraging vibrations. I never knew I would have so many people that cared for the same as I.
My perceptions were tainted a bit more than now and I am just peeking through to a new reality. One which has us all in grace.
Thank you so much for being here with me. Your support has reall gone a long way for me.

When I get to Portland, I will be doing sum more serious practice, like studying from Gypsy Caravan, and continuing my studies in Arabic.
Soon, I plan to create a nice video of my dancing for you to see. I'd like to show you my style. I've recently been studying some Bharatnatyam from videos and some traditional Turkish style. I also do some Bhangra and West African as well. I am just trying to further my fushion style a bit more. We'll see. 'Haven't got a clue how to get a hold of a video recorder. Also don't realy know how to use one. I'm hoping to find someone to do a trade for the recording.

I hope you all are doing well and following your Bliss, sincerely.

Much love and shimmies,
~Skylar*

I am really curious to see some new ideas.
You guys see any videos, meet any dancers, or see anything new for you. It doesn't mean that it would necessarily be 'new' to the world. Just for you.

I saw sum amazing Hoola Hoop dancing from a beautiful young dancer named Karis.
He is truly inspiring. I saw him perform a solo on the new "Evolution" DVD I got from Rakassah with performances by:
Kami Liddle ('Finally got to see her dance. WOW!!!)
Urban Tribal Dance Company ('Blew me away at TQNW '06 in PDX)
Zoe Jakes ('Sum new way of locking I've never seen before. A Beauty.)
Ava Fleming (Beautiful Sword dance you must see for yourself.)
Domba (My girls back home in Tempe, AZ show sum beatiful Bhangra/Belly fushion)
(see also: "Fire!" Candle Combinations and Belly Combos by Haven. Mmmmm...Haven)
Meleah (Awakens the Goddess with sum fabulous Afro-tribal Fushion)
Elizabeth Strong -Egyptian Folklore Dance ('Saw her wonderful Turkish Fushion Style at Rachels' Review show in SF)
Aubre (Watch her watch you with her enchanting eyes. Gaaahh)
And finally Urban Gypsy does sum Cirque du Flame to close it off.

So, have I convinced you to buy it yet?

Let the Fushion flow freely...

'Ride to SSF Bay area?
I have a rent agreement in the SF Bay area on the first of March. I will only pay $230 a month for 3 months. Then I'll find a relatively cheap place to live. The point of this agreement is so I can find a job as a Barista/Server, and or Bellydance Performer. I have experience in all fields. If I don't get there by the 1st of March, I will not be able to move there period. Yes, maybe another opportunity would come up. But this is my plan. I am trying to work now for rent money, etc... If anyone is going to the Bay area this month or by the 1st of March. If you want to meet a confident, young, talented, creative guy who knows boundaries and is way open at the same time, who can trade a lot of things. ie: Jewelry, Clothes, Conversation, etc... I am the individual to take to the Bay area.
Please consider this post the next/first time you go to the Bay area.
Thank you so much.
You are much appreciated.
Please contact me at: skylar_castiglione@yahoo.com

Much love and respect,
-Skylar*

Thanks guys. I will reply to all of you soon. I am so busy and can only use this office comp for 10 minutes at a time.
Thank you all for your posts to my tribe. i love you and hope to dance for all of you soon.

Hey All!

I wanted to invite any of you interested in joining a new tribe. It's for Bellydancers who have not had formal dance training in any other discipline prior to starting in BD! It's going to be a very fun place to kick back and discuss the specific problems, challenges, difficulties, and changes related to never having been a dancer before.

Please feel free to join! Post often! Let's see pictures, listings, costumes... whatever you feel like-

Namaste,

Electra

Hi, I'm Skylar Castiglione' and Welcome to *Beyond *the Binary* Bellydance!*
I started this Tribe because ever since I began my bellydancing journey, I've gotten so much ridacule both inside and out of the bellydance community. I am not a female bellydancer, I am not a male bellydancer, I do a Two-Spirit Fusion Bellydance. I am looking to network with other dancers to perform with, learn from, and just "be" in a connection with all members of this Tribe.
Thank you for joining me in this open, spirit, dance-loving community.

What is your story?
How do you relate to this Tribe?
Introduce Yourself, don't be shy! ;)
