So my very first performance is next Saturday and I'm really starting to worry. I've been practicing for at least ten minutes every day and I have one class and two rehearsals to go before the actual performance but there are two spots in the choreography that I keep getting stuck on. I know what movements I'm supposed to be doing but when I'm actually doing the dance I can't remember them!! I'm really nervous about this because I really want to do a good job!
What should I do???
What should I do???

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 10:44 AMwork the choreography until you know it without hesitating, until you know the music (and what moves go with it) at any point along the song. that way if you do ever hesitate or have a blank, you'll be able to recognise a point in the music and where in the choreo you are ;) plus if you forget the moves, if you know the music you can always improvise ^^
no seriously. work it until you know that you know it. muscle memory does the rest ;)
i find i always make mistakes during practice, always hesitate and screw up at the same bunch of steps... but once at the actual show, my brain kinda goes blank and my body does it all on it's own...
plus remember, the audience doesn't know your dance. if you screw up, keep smiling and keep going, and no one'll ever know...
so... don't worry. don't panic! relax, have fun, and keep that smile on! :)

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 11:12 AMIf this is a solo - guess what? Nobody will know what you've forgotten. ;-)
Have a move that's *automatic* for you - one that you can do in your sleep - if you get stuck, then do that
If that move doesn't *fit* the music, then pose prettily until your head catches up ((well, as long as it's not a long time)) - there's nothing written that says you have to be constantly moving
I've laughed, shrugged my shoulders and started dancing again when my head caught back up. On video, it looks intentional ;-) <<<<it's the video I recently posted in my blog>>>>
Relax. Breathe. Smile. -

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 7:27 AM:there's nothing written that says you have to be constantly moving "
indeed. i filmed myself dancing, and (amounst other things) one of the big things i needed to work on was the urge to fill EVERY SINGLE beat with a move. it gets busy... it just looked weird.... (i was improving though) sometimes the moves you don't make make just as much of a statement as the moves you do. (someone who actually studies dance said that, i can't remember who) i think it stems from the fear that you'll freeze up there, but listen to Etana ^_^

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 11:14 AMUnfortunately its a group number so if I get lost, it's going to be noticed! *biting fingernails* I'm actually the one dancing opposite my incredibly talented teacher so I'm really nervous! -

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 11:24 AMyou will be surprised how much you rely on cues from the other dancers ... even without realizing it. Since it is choreographed there probably aren't real cues built in but your body will follow along with just a short delay that won't be noticed by anyone. AND... if you boo boo, it's really not that big of a deal. My director has moments when she does it and she has been dancing for more than 10 years... I do it all the time, no big whoop and the thing is that most folks don't notice... not even the other dancers. Just remember to try and not make the "oh shit" face... that is a dead give away.
don't worry so much, this is supposed to be fun, so relax and your memory will do the rest!

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 11:30 AMThat's the same day I'm doing my first performance too! lol! What time are you dancing? I'll send you soothing brainwaves while I try to calm myself down too :) We're doing Tribal Improv so I'm lucky that I don't have to remember a choreography, but I'm really nervous about leading because I've only been doing this 4 weeks :| HALP! lol The good thing is that it's a short piece, and I think our instructor is being nice and arranging us in a chorus (horse-shoe line in back) and having groups of two or three come forward, and each person in those groups leads once and then moves back. So in theory I should only have to lead once, and she's letting us memorize some combos so I just have to remember my short combo and I'm set :) *fingers crossed lol*
I am also working on a solo though, and I've found that what the others have said is very true. IF you can find just a half hour in the day, do the routine over and over again as many times as you can in that half hour. And DON'T stop when you mess up, just keep moving somehow and don't stop the music.
I'll be wishing you lots of luck :) -

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 11:32 AMAwww, thanks Nienna! We're performing around 7pmEST! When are you performing? I'll send the soothing brainwaves right back! -

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 6:23 PMI'm not sure exactly what time we go on, but the show starts at 8 (7est). We are in the 'first half' my instructor said, and it's 90 minutes long, so we may be dancing almost at exactly the same time! :) I'll be sending good dancing vibes your way :)

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 11:35 AMoh! Hadara reminded me of something I forgot to mention. I like to trick my body, I've done it lots of times in other area's of my life and it works so here is something else I do.
While I'm practising the choreography, non-stop (don't touch that stop button! :P) if I do forget and mess up, even if I can't think of anything to do and I'm just standing there swaying (this is only practice afterall) I make sure I SMILE. I force myself to smile ever single time I mess up, because I have a habit of not smiling a lot. SO at the very least, when you do get on stage, and IF you mess up, your body will probably remember to smile when you do, and chances are all anyone will notice is your huge happy smile and think 'aww she's really into it'
ahh the power of distraction :)

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 1:55 PMSince you are dancing opposite of your teacher, can she maybe give you a non-verbal que as to what move is coming next? Perhaps a wink or a hand motion that looks like it's supposed to be part of the dance? If all else fails,SMILE, and shimmy (or hip drop) whatever fits the music. Or you could just pose pretty so it looks like your teacher is doing a small solo bit. Most of all... don't worry. We all make mistakes - even the seasoned performers. Just take it with a grain of salt & keep dancing away.
Good Luck & Have Fun!!

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 1:01 PMI find that I'm most comfortable with a routine when I can run through it both with the music and without the music. If I can run through it with no music, just counting, then it's ingrained in my brain. If you haven't already, try drilling it without the music playing - maybe that'll help?
In any case, the rule of thumb is, as long as you don't STOP, no one will notice....just don't freeze entirely, keep moving somehow, even just a small flutter - and keep smiling throughout - and no one will notice. :) Good luck, doll! -

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 6:46 PMI agree with Bellatrix, no matter what you do not stop keep going even if you flub!! Its scary but just realize once you get pass this, its all cake. :) We all will send out nothing but beautiful dance thoughts for you gig!!! -

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 2:03 PM- Listen to the music until it seems second nature to know all parts of it.
- Run through trouble spots over and over without music, counting them out slowly and working through troublesome transitions like weight changes or turns.
- Practice more than 10 minutes a day. Seriously. And then practice in your head in the car, at work, on the bus, waiting in line, etc. Don't underestimate the power of mental practice!
- Take a deeeeeeep breath.
- Know that if you fook up, it isn't the end of the world, and surprisingly, being in a group will probably mask any errors on the part of individual dancers. I have many good F-up stories from myself and other dancers and believe me, people just don't notice as long as you keep smiling and dancing. I'm not talking about little things, either. I'm talking about nearly going over backwards during a backbend, about one dancer smiling and shimmying while the other two did a duet that was SUPPOSED to be a trio, ending up facing blatantly the wrong direction while everyone else in the group is facing the exact opposite direction... none of my friends notice these things until I point them out on video, and then the reaction is "oh, huh..."

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 9:31 PMI just started performing about 6 months ago and have done about half a dozen, so I'm hardly experienced - My teacher told all of us that the first thing the audience sees is your face - so smile- second is arms - so hold them correctly - If you mess up with your feet or hips, if the smile and arms are working for you, it won't be noticed. Video and photos bear this out. It works. Above all, worry less and have more fun! If you love to dance, that will shine right through. -
-
Re: First Performance Jitters!
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 2:50 AMtotally agree at the "first thing the audience sees is your face - so smile- second is arms - so hold them correctly" part!
our teacher tells us the same thing. she's like, if you wear a skirt and screw up the feet, no one'll see as long as the upper body is doing more or less what the other dancers' is.
plus, you're dancing with a group! so hey, no stress! you'd be amazed at how much you're subconciously looking at the other dancers to see what moves they are doing. and your body follows. if you know the choreo well enough, that subconcious looking will put you right back on track if you forget for an instant ;) (although me if i look too much at other dancers, i tend to screw up more especially if the one i'm looking at isnt perfectly on time with me hehe)
plus, guess what, you ARE allowed to glance at your teacher even if she isn't in your direct line of sight ;) we do that all the time in our group, turn our heads to look at eachother and smile ^^ it's rather reassuring :) and we've been told it's cute ^^
so really, don't worry ;) it'll all go just fine! :) -

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 5:23 AMLike everyone else. Smile. relax. don't stress it, (ha ha easier said than done)
ten minutes isn't enough... when your driving do the upper half of the choreography. when your walking/shopping standing around at work, walk through it w/o the upper body.
I spend half my day sitting and half walking a construction site. I can't be a bd anywhere near a construction site.... so I do a lot of upperbody at the desk inside, and I walk through a lot of the steps, hips are easy to add on to feet, but you can't add hips to foot patterns you don't know.
So... usually that's the key, feet firts then layer the hips, and you can always fudge your arms. =) gooooood luck!

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 7:05 AMLots of good advice....
one of the most important things for a first performance - don't forget to breathe, and remember why you dance. Have FUN doing it. If you screw up, it's NOT the end of the world, there will be other dances :)

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 7:47 AMI just did my first big student show a few weeks ago. We had over 100 people in attendance, so I got nervous as hell!! Everyone has been giving great advice. I went over the choreography until it was second nature. Remembering to breathe is a great thing. My teacher kept saying "If you screw up a move, don't freeze. Just keep smiling and doing what you are doing. On the next count, join back in with everyone else." Her and everyone here are right about that. I totally botched a move during a group number and no one I talked to knew I did. Also, I found keeping your brain busy until your performance will help you not think about your nerves as much. I got ready, helped my dance sisters get ready, we warmed-up together, and joked around a lot.
Will be sending good thoughts to you and Nienna on Saturday!

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 9:13 AMDrink water but don't eat before hand, in case you get jittery you don't want a rock in your stomach. Breathe easy and if at all possible block out the performance on the stage if you haven't practiced on it. I usually eat one of those huge lifesaver mints before hand because it opens my nose and air passages and makes it easier for me to breathe and smile. Another good thing is to find someone in the audience who is looking like they are having a good time and focus on their smile/face. Try to make eye contact a few times otherwise you will look nervous.

Re: First Performance Jitters!
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 2:18 PMGood luck! And have fun. Tempest is right, If you screw up don't sweat it. I have trouble with the group things too. Solos are sooo much easier because no one knows if you mess up. But just try to have fun. I've seen dancers who have messed up and just smiled and went on like they meant to do that. It didn't totally ruin anything for anyone. Everyone makes a mistake, forgets a move, trips, has costume malfunctions....just do your best and enjoy it.

Mon, May 12, 2008 - 9:00 AMYou look amazing!!! In the "performance" shot, your arms are beautiful - your smile looks like it's connecting with the audience - I'm glad you had so much fun. My last performance was pretty crummy. I'm hoping to redeem myself in June - Still, it is addicting isn't it ?!
