I finally found a way to really use my DVD's to the fullest. I've been just putting one on and going through it without really learning the material. Someone made a comment that lead me to start doing only a part from this DVD or that and just repeating it during my practice time. In general, I find I do more and am learning more. I wish it hadn't taken so long to learn this or maybe I've evolved as a dancer to this point.

Re: Finally
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 12:52 PMi had assumed that dvds would be structured like a real lesson at first too. reading this opened my eyes to how they structure dvds to fit as much info as possible in the production time etc.
www.shira.net/learnvideo.htm
that was written some time ago (it's still in the old format for her site which means she hasn't updated it either) now adays we have chaptered DVDs that u can just skip back (in theory......) one chapter. and there are A LOT of vids that have come out since the bulk of the DVDs she's reviewed were posted or published. (like cheeky girls entire production company)
i had the same "oh duh!" moment it sounds like you did ^_^ -

Sat, October 24, 2009 - 9:49 PMyah i mix from cheeky girls dvds.. to recordings of Shimmy... back to a different dvd and then on to the youtube dance classes i recently started purchasing.. depends on my mood....keeps me interested.. And when i'm really feeling wild and crazy.. i downloaded a terrific cd with songs written for belly dance classes and practice.. It basically keeps the same beat with different tunes and some added beats on different songs.. Its hard being out here in the boonies, trying to keep interested and trying to make progress.

Re: Finally
Sat, October 24, 2009 - 11:00 PMExactly I posted something similar to this one a board I don't know if it was here or somewhere else. I kept buying dvd's but I have not mastered any of them. So I put mysel fon a limit that I would choose three dvd's according to level and then progress from there. I started with my beginner dvd's to make sure I got everything possible out of them.
I started with
Sadie complete bellydance guide-finished
Drills, Drills, Drills,-which I am still on because I haven't mastered the drill sections with zils and dancing.
Ballet for belly dancers -almost done
Beautiful technique from step one.- I didn't like this one so I sold it back.
Next I am onto
pops, locks and shimmies Sadie
Ultimate belldance sadie
and opulant motion
turbo shimmy with celeste
I was just buying and buying it became pointless so everytime I finish a round of dvd's I sell some back and buy some more.
I think starting with the basics was a smart idea. It helped me see what I need work on and helps to identify the problem areas when I am layering. Also I feel so accomplished after I have mastered them and can put them into my dance. -

Re: Finally
Sun, October 25, 2009 - 10:49 AMI feel I am getting more. Right now I"m working on Combinorgaphy, Love Potion, Autumn Ward's DVD and a basic one to work on my undulations. I need to add the Drills, Drills, Drills. I started long ago with Videos you played on the VCR and just got in the habit of following them from beginning to end because it was too hard to rewind the tape again and again. I need to extend my practice time to add a couple more things like Zils and one of the choreography's I've got. -

Re: Finally
Sun, October 25, 2009 - 1:24 PMI feel the same I am retaining what I am learning and even in class there is a noticeable difference. But I am on the easy stuff now so it seems like a breeze when the levels of the dvd's go up I wonder how it will be challenging but fun I hope. lol
I use Heartbeat of bellydance with Jenna
and Bellydance with Zils with elsa at least once a week to get me more familiar with the rythmns and zils.
Combinography I think is on my fourth set, How is it? I have love potion, love it. -

Re: Finally
Sun, October 25, 2009 - 2:19 PMI love combinography because it helps you take your standard moves and create interest when you have to repeat them. She talks about walking, entering, poses, transitions, etc. I'm still have not seen the whole one. I got to a certain part and am focusing on that. It is wonderful and it dove tails beautifully with Nadia's improvisational toolbox so they complement each other. -

Re: Finally
Mon, October 26, 2009 - 7:50 AMone thing i wanna add as something that is super important for learning from DVDs is
BODY AWARENESS AND ANATOMY
with no teacher watching you to correct your posture it is very easy to learn bad habbits and to hurt youself. honestly, Shimmy is what reminded me of this. at the office i used to work at a patient who was there for lower back pain said she was doing Shimmy and long story short she didn't understand- becuase it's not clear AT ALL- that the "neutral posture" is what you need to keep for your ENTIRE dance practice (if you don't have a teacher guiding you for the moves that derive from that rule, then i wouldn't even do those moves). anyway, i showed her actual neutral pelvis (tribes.tribe.net/healthybe...d047c821d1 Jennifer's post below mine) and she was amazed at how her back pain lessened AND the moves became much more of a work out. this is a posture the Dr teaches ALL THE TIME to EVERYONE.
so yheah, i started with dvds and learned bad habbits because i didn't know at first. i know A LOT of people who have. frankly, i also know people who learned bad habbits from teachers who didn't know enough anatomy to safely instruct. i've also been in class with women who didn't have enough body awareness to stop doing something and ask for help when something hurt. so i guess the point is when learning from DVDs we have to know enough about anatomy and our own bodies to translate the instructor onto ourselves and keep safe posture and alignment. if you have a good DVD the instructor will be breaking down the moves in a way that lets you understand how to make them happen, so that you're not just trying to make yourself look like her, because moves will not look the same on different people, and you could hurt yourself that way.
sorry that's so long, but it's important, i don't want anyone getting hurt doing what should be such a healing dance ^_^
oh! and i reccomend "dancing the sacred shapes" with the Goddess dancing and Jenna's "basics and beyond" both are really good dvds for getting the vocab of BD ^_^ -

Re: Finally
Mon, October 26, 2009 - 10:04 PMFariha. you and i agree about the Goddess Dancing.. i started with that.. its simple and clear. We consistently disagree on Shimmy.. When i watch it, i hear them remind about posture every two or three minutes.. But thats perceptions for you. I also agree that learning bad habits can happen in a live class when people don't feel comfortable asking for help.. or don't know their bodies well enough to know that they are doing it incorrectly. -

Re: Finally
Tue, October 27, 2009 - 7:44 PMi see the reminders about posture, but what's missing is the instruction to use it DURING the movements. i knew before the show aired from the Goddess dancing dvd, but everyone else i've met who said they use the show has been surprised by the both the concept of needing to keep neutral posture during the actual movements AND by how it changes the feeling and difficulty of the moves.
maybe i have a biased sample tho, i'm glad it works for you and hopefully the people i've met are in the minority ^_^
