... and I am always sick. I have had a severe case of IBS for over 15 years now. The slightest bit of stress makes me physically ill. It has improved a lot since starting to dance but I still have to accept that I will be sick in the days leading up to a performance and for a good 1-2 weeks afterward. It is worth it of course but in between performances I am having a hard time staying motivated when I feel horrible, have no energy at best, trouble getting out of bed at worst, and my mind feels like mush.
How do you guys stay motivated? How do you care when it's hard to care enough to even eat?

Re: Staying motivated when sick?
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 4:56 PMim sorry you have to deal with that, first.
i get anxiety, not as bad. it would make me sick to my stomach and upset my bowels but that was as ill as i got, and it usually pertained to something specific, anyway: what helped me was to get distracted from it. if you can muster up enough to get started on something and get your mind occupied, or maybe watch some performances that really draw you in and make you forget yourself, would that help?
meditation might also be helpful.
gambate (good luck/do your best) i wish i had better advice.

Re: Staying motivated when sick?
Thu, August 20, 2009 - 5:21 AMI have Ulcerative Colitis and Crohnes Disease so I understand exactly what you mean....It can be really hard to stay motivated or to dance with your belly when your belly has gone "boom".... When I can't dance because it hurts or my belly is swollen, I listen to music, watch youtube "performances" choreograph things in my head for music that has "caught" me...I check in with Tribe more often when I feel bad to see what everyone is talking about.... -

Re: Staying motivated when sick?
Thu, August 20, 2009 - 7:59 AMI know what you mean. My internet time seems to be directly proportional to how well I feel. On really good days I may not get on at all. On bad ones I check Tribe every hour or so.
Any tips for choreographing in your head? I'm trying to finish one up right now and not being able to stand long enough to work on it is only adding to the frustration. -

Re: Staying motivated when sick?
Thu, August 20, 2009 - 11:31 PMI have days when I'm working 12 to 15 hours so I am totally exhausted. Many times picture the moves in my head and imagine my body doing the moves. Sometimes I even use the muscles a bit to help me feel as if I'm actually doing the moves. As far as choreography, I put music on and listen to it again and again, picturing various moves I can make to the music. when I have the time and energy to dance, I then try the actual moves to see who well they work. I find this helps me keep motivated. -

Re: Staying motivated when sick?
Sat, August 22, 2009 - 8:08 PMI listen to the music and picture myself dancing as it plays.... Not so much thinking "mya here" or "shimmie there" but dancing as if I was just playing with the music.... I have found that a choreography flows better if I do that then trying to figure out what fits, if that makes sense.....
Sometimes, I visualize it as a performance...fabulous costume, adoring audience and all ;) It's really more like daydreaming than anything else,lol...I hope this helps.....
