Hello! My mom recently offered to look into getting me a custom made costume for Christmas, and needless to say, I'm VERY excited. Her big thing is that it's got to fit perfectly, so it needs to be custom made. I've found places that do custom work, like Lrose designs, which makes beautiful stuff, but I'm looking for the beaded bra and skirt or beaded dress type outfit. (example: www.polyvore.com/turquoise..._bra/thing
Does anyone have a favorite place to go for this? I can't seem to find anyone who does custom work. Thank you very much!!!

Re: Where to shop for professional costumes
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 11:41 AMIMHO, you'd be better off buying a costume in as close to your size as possible and finding a local seamstress to do the final fitting work. Costumes are like street clothes - they're made for a generic fit and don't take into consideration some of our unique attributes. There's also something to be said for having someone local - what if the custom-made bra needs the hooks moved over an inch or an extra dart is needed in the belt? You'd have the hassle of sending it back, etc etc etc -

Re: Where to shop for professional costumes
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 11:48 AMLuckily, I'm a good enough seamstress myself to make minor alterations to pre bought costumes, which works well enough, but I just feel that one made with my measurements to start with would fit better in the long run. Pus, then I can have exactly the colors, shapes, and styles that I want :D -

Sign up for their e-mails and they send periodic sale notices of costumes they have in stock.
Keep in mind that costumes like the one you provided a link to are made to fit a range of sizes. Bras can usually fit at least 2 cup sizes (either with or without padding). Beaded skirts (like the turquoise one in the picture) are usually stretchy and can also fit several sizes (upper hip, lower hip, and length combinations). Which is a good thing since few of us stay the same size as the years go on. ;o) Belts, especially those constructed in 2 halves, can easily be sized (and re-sized). When in doubt, buy it bigger than you need.

Fri, October 23, 2009 - 10:07 PMWhat style do you dance? If cabaret, Dahlal is good and reasonably priced. For tribal and tribaret, Synari does AMAZING work.

Sat, October 24, 2009 - 7:37 AMPersonally, if I could afford it, I would have a Bella costume made for me, but she is in Istanbul, so I'm sure her costumes aren't cheap. I"ve seen some gorgeous Tribaret costumes she's made for an old teacher of mine, and they are beautiful. Someday when I can afford it, although it seems you have to have a password just to access her website. That's awesome that your mom is doing that for you! I wish mine was! hehe -

Re: Where to shop for professional costumes
Sat, October 24, 2009 - 11:45 AMYou can certainly place custom orders with Dahlal and Audrena also takes custom orders: www.audrena.com/TheBellyDanceStore.php
Eshta also does custom costumes:
www.eshtaamar.com/customcostumes.html
But custom orders tend to be expensive and can be time-consuming. If you're in a hurry or bargain hunting, go to the Bhuz.com swap meet, post the measurements and style and colors you're looking for, and chances are, someone will have a new or lightly used costume that they can sell you at a discount. You probably just need to move some hooks. I have gotten all my professional costumes there cheaply, you'd never know they were used.

Sat, October 24, 2009 - 11:53 AMEcho Emilie.
I have some GORGEOUS gently-used costumes. With just a little tweaking (moving hooks/eyes around, adding elastic here and there), you'd never know they weren't custom made. And just like with a car, when you buy used, there is a little depreciation that hits so you never pay the full "new" price.

Tue, November 3, 2009 - 12:33 PMBella costumes cover a broad range of prices. The site is password protected because she doesnt want people stealing her newest designs. Sometimes you can get a password in a few days, sometimes it takes months to get one.
