zills!

topic posted Thu, May 22, 2008 - 2:23 PM by  kalyani
ok, i want zills. really! those things are neat!
anyone have any comments, advice, tips, stories-about-how-hard-zills-are-to-learn or my-boyfriend-dumped-me-cos-too-much-noise...?

i'm especially worried about
a) not having a good sens of rhythm with my left hand
and
b) not being able to dance and play at the same time.

i was advised to get them here www.saroyanzils.com/ cos been apparently they're the best, and been told that the maker is going to retire soon and won't make any more of these wonderful things... which kinda prompted my decision to get some now while i'm at it...

whaddyall think?

Yes, do so. My zills are still not my bestest buddies but we're learning to co-exist. One of my co-students once said they're good finger jewelry. :)

I don't suppose we're well rounded dancers at all if we don't learn to play our zills.

      lol ^^

yeah one of my favest part of bellydancing, apart from the beauty and control of the moves and the sweet-ass costumes heh ^^ , is the pure diversity in it. be it in the different styles, tribal and it's run-offs, egyptian, turkish, 'indian', cabaret... but also in the accessories! veil, double veil, zills, isis wings, fans, tambourine, not to mention fire (candles, poi, ...)
it's so neat that, there's bound to be a style to fit every personality, every mood.... bellydancing rawks! ^^

      so i've been told.... :(
which is why might as well get some now!

they're not that expensive you know!! i was rather surprised at the price, was expecting them to be more....
cheap zils cost like 10-15 bucks, and the saroyans i want cost 22$....

My saroyans are much better than my cheap "practice" zills. The practice one dent around the edges and have blackened over time. Cheap. The sound/tone is much better with the Saroyans as well. If you have the chance, buy them where you try them out. Different styles have different tones and you'll want a set that doesn't drive you crazy.

As for learning. I was lucky enough to take a basic zill class from Suhaila. She broke it down into really easy pieces, and taught how to move along with it. That's the kicker - you CAN NOT learn zills standing still. You MUST move. (OK - my own personal opinion, but that the only way it's stuck with me). I'd recommend her method (and there must be a video out there).

Devon, that's really cheap! i was including shipping to here though, that does cost...

Naneh, yes, part of why i really like the saroyan website is that you can hear the sound of the zils. really high-pitched ones end up killing my ears lol, so i really wanted to pick by sound :)
thanks for the advice! i'll definitely look for a vid

I love zills too.... I have several of them, most of them are Saroyan's... and they are really good. The only ones my dog support are the Contemporary ones of Saroyan (at least from all the ones I have) because they have a low tonal range.
But my set Zildjian's are my absolute favorite!!! The sound is even purer then the sound of my Saroyan's..... and they are much heavier.

Totally second that! The Zildjians are like "duct covers": heavy and not so beautiful plus me in Germany it took them half a year to dispatch them (shouldn't happen in the U.S. though), my teacher weaving Saroyans in front of my nose and chuckling of my despair - now she actually admitted: they sound great! It is such a clear tone and I hear myself very well in class, that is the Zildjians are not only heavier but much louder. Nila, do you have small hands? I have rather long fingers so I can play them but if you are the small hands type I don't know.

Yes, I have very small hands!! In gloves I have size 7 - the smallest size for women.... and they are still a little big for my hands.
I have to admit that in the beginning I had great difficulties with the Zildjian's (not only the size, but also the weight - oh, my poor fingers..), but i kept practising with them because of their wonderfull clear sound. And now it feels odd when I use my Saroyan's or other brands.
The format of the Zildjian's are comparable with the Arabesque zills from Saroyan - but much, much, much heavier.
And you might be suprised Nuria, but I find the Zildjians beautiful - they have more rough surface and yet a satin look (they are a mixture of tin, silver and copper) - I like this combination....
I also had to wait very long for them. Last time I ordered a pair for a friend of mine, the shopkeeper ordered 7 pairs (!) from the supplier in the USA - I don't think he can sell them all as they are rather expansive...
So, Nuria, if you need an extra pair, it might be quicker to let me buy them for you and send them by post to Germany....

Saroyans are more than worth the woney. I have a pair and the tone is so much better than any other pair I have--now the others are languishing in my bag and tend to get lent out in class to people who forgot theirs. They sounds so good that I actually enjoy zill drills!

I love my Saroyan zills. The sound is amazing. I'd been zilling with cheap practice ones for years and I have to say, the Saroyans are wonderful. I'd totally reccommend them.

I love saroyan zills. I have smaller hands, so the smaller sizes work better. The heavy gauge makes a lower, louder tone in a smaller size.

i was actually wondering about that,
on the site the sound of the "heavy" ones are higher pitched than the sound of the "light" ones, that doesn't really make sense....
      is it actually the case?
or did they somehow accidentally swap all the sounds?
there's no risk of receiving the wrong one if you order online according to the sound you want?

I'm not sure about that this is the case... But maybe because of my bad English I don't understand it well enough
Anyhow, I also have very small Saroyan Tinkerzills (they are in the mini zill-section of his website) and they have a very high pitch..... Much higher then my Arabesques...

I just received my new Saroyan Grecian Silver zills yesterday.
They are gorgeous. The tone is elegant and feminine, not heavy.
They may be a bit large for smaller hands.
I compared the pitch of the pair that I have with the pitch of the example pair on the Saroyan website. The example pair are a micro hair sharper in pitch than mine, but otherwise, the tone quality is the same.
Apparently the Saroyan Grecian Brass are the lowest pitched of the Saroyan zills. The Grecian Silver are slightly higher in pitch than the brass. I would assume that the Grecian Silvers may be the lowest pitched of the Saroyan silver zills.
They are not hard on the ears!!!
If Mr. Saroyan is retiring soon, I may just order another pair as a "spare".
By the way, I found out from Marge who works in the Saroyan office, that the silver zills are made from an alloy of brass and German silver. They are not made of brass which is coated in silver. They are the same material throughout. They will take a long time to discolor because the German silver has some special property that prevents rapid discoloration.
