"And if my words did glow, with the gold of sunshine. And if my tunes were played on the harp unstrung..." Please help these words to ripple... ripple becomes a wave... wave becomes a tsunami... pretty soon love and compassion are the law of the land and we can dance in peace and unity!

Right now there are two competing signature drives to put Cannabis legalization initiatives on the ballot in California in November 2010.

One is found at www.taxcannabis2010.org

The other is found at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org

Please look carefully at the text of both laws (the text of each is finalized) and make up your own mind which one you support.

I am supporting www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org because our law will protect Cannabis users from discrimination in

healthcare, employment, and housing. It is a full legalization measure for industrial hemp and recreational cannabis which will restore full human rights to Hemp farmers and Cannabis users all across California. Of course supplying Cannabis to children will remain illegal just as it is today. Driving vehicles under the influence will remain illegal just as it is today. Cannabis users will still be fired from their jobs if they show up to work impaired.

There are two parts to our plan. The first part is to publicly post and personally distribute our "Freedom Lover's Call to Arms" in order to recruit volunteers. This document is available here-

www.imgur.com/dbU83

The second part of our plan is to ask everyone who volunteers to make a pledge for how many signatures they can collect in

the next 30 days or so. 15-30 signatures is a good number. If enough volunteers show this level of commitment we can succeed. You can probably get that number from your family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors without having to solicit in public too much. This is an "out of the closet" movement. We will have to proudly advocate human rights for responsible, honest, hard-working Cannabis smokers in order to convince legitimate people to support us. I can supply stickers equivalent to each persons pledge number. These stickers can be used to generate interest and be given to voters who sign the petition. Here is the sticker design-

www.imgur.com/2cjvb

Feel free to distribute and use these images. Just don't copyright them.

We have 145 days in order to get the number of signatures that we need. Our petition is hot off the press on 9/11 and we

have started collecting the first signatures yesterday 9/12.

We are polling 56% public support for Cannabis legalization in California which menas that this is an initiative which is not doomed. Its time has finally arrived; we are at the tipping point right now. Now is the time to do this and to do it right. We may only get one chance. If a law which is not exactly what we want is implemented then we may lose our critical mass and our ability to set it right.

I believe that less adults will smoke cannabis after it is legal. This is the case in the Netherlands where it has been

available over-the-counter for 30 years yet only half as many citizens (percentage-wise) smoke as do citizens here. My economics professor has taught for years that prohibition has not succeeded in decreasing usage by increasing penalties. Instead it has destroyed lives and families without substantial benefit to society. After legalization hard-drug usage will decrease due to a "separation of the markets," a decline in the price of Cannabis relative to hard-drugs, and the restoration of honesty and common sense in drug education. Violence, thievery, and the incarceration of honest people will decrease as well. I also believe that a well regulated market will decrease the availability and appeal of cannabis to children. In fact teenage Cannabis use in California has fallen steadily since the passage of Proposition 215. Furthermore the adults who smoke Cannabis after legalization will be better able appreciate the majesty of nature in peace and unity without learning to fear and disrespect authority figures. This will be better for their spirits and better for society. Finally the human rights of legitimate medical Cannabis patients will be better protected than they are today. Legalizing Cannabis will create a safer, healthier, and more humane California for us all to live in.

If you want to help us in any way please contact the CCI campaign at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org or write me at
deep_space_underground@yahoo.com I give you my encouragement to modify this message if necessary and distribute it to anyone who might help on any forum or by any mechanism.

Love,
with
the Skerik Trio featuring Marco Benevento & Dvonne Lewis

Thursday, February 19, 2009
Roseland Theater, Portland, OR

Presented by Double Tee, MAST Projects & Beloved Presents

Rarely can one mention “ancient traditions” and “cutting edge musical styles” in the same breath without provoking thoughts of Peter Gabriel and his work with musicians such as Youssou N'Dour, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Master Musicians of Jajouka. The musical combinations, which blend old world and new, are powerful, hauntingly beautiful, and ritualistic, and their intention is devotional – to trigger ecstatic release for both listener and player.

For one night only, Double Tee Concerts, MAST Projects, and Beloved Presents, in partnership with the Alaska Airlines Portland Jazz Festival, bring that experience to you with Morocco’s Master Musicians of Jajouka, saxophone pioneer Skerik and his trio composed of Marco Benevento and Dvonne Lewis, and the Portland-based Everyone Orchestra, conducted by Matt Butler.

For one night only, you will experience a Roseland Theater like you’ve never seen it. Under the guiding hands of Beloved Presents’ Elliot Rasenick (Cherry Blossom Ball, Jai Ganesh, Beloved Festival) and MAST Projects’ Jason Mastrine (Shanghai Nights, YarmonyGrass), the venue will be transformed from its steamy and dark roots as Portland’s greatest rock venue that everyone loves to hate into a beautiful and dream-like magical palace – a perfect setting for what will be a pivotal night in the merger of world music and cutting edge creativity in the Portland music scene.

Hailing from a small ancient village in the foothills of Morocco’s Rif Mountains, the MASTER MUSICIANS OF JAJOUKA have performed their enthralling, trance-inducing music for thousands of years. Described by Mick Jagger as “one of the most musically inspiring groups in the world,” the Jajoukas were originally discovered by William Burroughs and Paul Bowles in the 1950s, and introduced to the Western world by the late Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones, who recorded their otherworldly sounds on a pilgrimage to Jajouka in 1968. Their album Brian Jones Presents The Pipes of Pan at Jajouka earned the group a fervent cult following and collaborations with numerous musicians, including Ornette Coleman, Peter Gabriel, and most recently Talvin Singh and Bill Laswell. Newsweek described their music as “an evocation of sustained ecstasy … chaotic, cacophonous, sometimes at war with itself” and “utterly intoxicating.” Led by Bachir Attar, whose family has passed down the group’s traditions from father to son for generations, this all-male ensemble features 15 rhaita (imagine the oboe) players and five drummers.

The EVERYONE ORCHESTRA is a revolving cast of stellar musicians conducted by founder Matt Butler. EO performances are designed to span musical genres and break the boundaries of how an audience experiences music. Butler’s orchestral vision derives in part from desert art festival Burning Man’s ‘no spectators, only participants’ ethic and is undoubtedly influenced by his old friend and mentor Ken Kesey, the king of the Merry Pranksters. It's a celebratory, interactive, and improvisational experiment that will take the audience on a journey. This E.O. performance will be created from a continuously evolving cast of characters including Skerik (Critters Buggin, Roger Waters, Garage A Trois), keyboardist Marco Benevento (GRAB, Benevento-Russo Duo), members of the Master Musicians of Jajouka, guitarman Eric McFadden (EMT, George Clinton's P-Funk), vocalist Jans Ingber (Motet, Charlie Hunter, Norah Jones, Ivan Neville), and baritone saxophonist Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.
Opening the show will be the SKERIK TRIO, combining disparate elements such as free jazz, funk, and textural music. Performing on the tenor and baritone saxophone, often with electronics and loops, Skerik is a pioneer in a playing style that has been dubbed saxophonics. Of Marco Benevento, Rolling Stone says, "Benevento swings between rude-synth fun and high-speed piano breaks as if he were both Keith Emerson and McCoy Tyner."

It would be a significant understatement to say this is a night of music not to be missed. Join us on what will become one of your “desert island” musical experiences of 2009…at the Roseland Palace.

The EO line-up at 4 Peaks included Tea Leaf Green's Josh Clark, ALO's Steve Adams, Sean Lehe (Izabella) and members of Flowmotion, Poor Man's Whiskey and Reeble Jar. The festival concluded with Butler standing atop a platform stage in the center of the audience, conducting two adjacent stages simultaneously (the festival main stage which hosted the The Everyone Orchestra and the side stage which presented The Everyone Else Orchestra). Butler made his way to the platform while longtime EO member Asher Fulero, led the band through Phish's "Back on the Train." Looking back at the first-ever occurrence, Butler jokes, "I'll only play festivals with two stages now!"

April 24th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Some of you may know the people involved in putting on the 4th Annual Panagea Project Benefit - Deb Delman, Executive Director of The Pangaea Project, Matt Butler, E.O. conductor, Craig Howard, Jason Mastrine, and Gene Ehrbar, who are promoting the show, to name a few. We were in a meeting the other day when someone started pointing out the various degrees of separation between all the players involved in this year’s celebration. It’s a pretty tight knit group.

Within minutes this fun game had extended to include us and fans like us so it got us to thinking, what if other people attending the benefit next month each posted their six degrees of the Pangaea Proejct Benefit with The Everyone Orchestra on this website…relevant details, stories, trivia, etc. What will we discover about each other and the people around us? Pangaea and EO are all about community so it seems only appropriate. We can’t wait to hear your stories and learn how connected we all really are.

Here’s one to get you started. Add your own and let the story grow!

• Jeff Sipe and Tye North played together in Leftover Salmon.

• Jeff is the founder of Zambiland Orchestra to which EO attributes much of its’ inspiration.

• Matt Butler of EO met Stanton Moore while drumming at a Zambiland performance in Atlanta.

• When our friend and (likely) your’s, Sun Lee of KBOO Radio, won the guest conductor raffle at the benefit in ‘06 he was wearing a Zambiland t-shirt.
Love that video!

OK, here’s mine:

Stanton Moore was part of EO on JamCruise 6, this past January.

So was Jans Ingber.

Tye North has also participated in Zambiland.

Deb Delman used to work for Planet Bluegrass where Leftover Salmon played many times.

Tye and Michael Kang were bandmates in Commotion.

Michael Kang participated in EO at the Village Building Convergence last year.

So did Darol Anger and Asher Fulero.

Darol played the EO set at Smilefest.

So did Jeff Sipe.
I became a taper in 1997. Some of my first shows were those great Tony Furtado Band gigs at the Fox Theatre.

I used to put Deb Delman on the SCI guestlist because she babysat a band member’s kids. Perks.

My wife has a rockstar crush on Scott Law.
I met Matt Butler through some long-time Jambay family. I met Deb Delman through our mutual friend Jon Fishman and that was my first introduction to Everyone Orchestra. I met Tye North and Scott Law through Jason Mastrine who lived in Colo. but now lives here and was introduced by a mutual friend. I also met a friend named Charlie through that same friend who introduced me to Sun Lee. I only know my wife because of a Phish connection and my wife has Stanton Moore on her “list”. I met Jeff Sipe back in the early 90’s when the Aquarium Rescue Unit blew 100 people’s minds every night LOL.
I’m a drummer at heart, so I always loved great drummers. Met Matt Butler through Jeremy & Neil at the first ever EO. Met Taper Jeff through Jeremy also. Traded Galactic shows (mmmmm, Stanton Moore) online with Brian (getjams), he moved to Portland. Met Jason Mastrine through Brian when he moved to Portland also.

Met Sun through volunteering with HeadCount. Learned we had a ton of mutual friends. Was standing next to him when he won the guest conducting spot.

Add to that the new additions of Pangaea first-timer James Beaton of Storm Large & the Balls and Everclear, and veteran Tony Furtado and that gives us a heck of a line-up.

Want to meet the E.O. Players and watch their Saturday Soundcheck? Then buy the Pangaea Ticket Package! This year's package includes one ticket to each night of the benefit, one commemorative hand-pulled silkscreen event poster, and a Saturday Soundcheck and pre-show Artist Meet & Greet/Poster signing. Cost for the package is $80 plus applicable Ticketmaster fees. Buy yours now!
Kevin Bacon, Meet Matt Butler. A few of us were in a meeting the other day when someone started pointing out the various "Bacon Numbers" of separation between the E.O. players, organizers, and fans involved in this year's celebration. This got us to thinking, what if other people attending the benefit next month each posted their six degrees of the Pangaea Project Benefit on the Pangaea Benefit site and our Tribe.net page ... relevant details, stories, trivia, etc. What will we discover about each other and the people around us? Pangaea and EO are all about community so it seems only appropriate. We can't wait to hear your stories and learn how connected we all really are.

Here are some ideas to get you going. Please join in and create your own!
Jeff Sipe and Tye North played together in Leftover Salmon.
Jeff is the founder of Zambiland Orchestra to which EO attributes much of its inspiration.
Matt Butler of EO met Stanton Moore while drumming at a Zambiland performance in Atlanta.
When our friend Sun Lee of KBOO Radio won the guest conductor raffle at the benefit in '06, he was wearing a Zambiland t-shirt.

Whatever you do, Take care of your shoes! And don't forget this website - www.pangaeabenefit.org - it's your key to all things Pangaea (and then some). Friday and Saturday, May 16 & 17, at the Crystal Ballroom!

In addition to conductor Matt Butler, this outing’s incarnation of the Everyone Orchestra consisted of Steve Kimock, Chris Haugen (Axis Brothers) Samantha Stollenwerck, Jamie Janover, the colorful Mojow & the Vibration Army and Mike Sugar (Jambay). As expected a number of surprise guests also joined the Everyone Orchestra on the road. At San Francisco’s Independent, socially conscious hip hopper Blane Lyon and harpstress Eah filtered onstage during the group’s set. At the Mystic Theatre , both Kimock’s Zero bandmate Greg Anton and his son John Morgan Kimock improvised with the group. At the Everyone Orchestra’s Potrero Park performance, fans also donated over 1600 pairs of new socks and underwear to Project Homeless Collect. The Everyone Orchestra will perform at the 10,000 Lakes Music Festival this weekend with a new cast of players including members of Hot Buttered Rum and Tea Leaf Green.

Highlights included an extremely pumped and participatory audience following Matt Butler’s conducting to the dime, shredding steel pan solos, a rocking version of John Lennon’s “Instant Karma” with audience members dancing with the cue cards for “the moon, and the stars and the sun, ” conscious hip hop with Blane Lyon and kirtan led by songstress Suzanne Sterling.
Short tours like this one, and others in the works, will allow the musicians to stretch themselves and the boundaries of the improvisational games we play,” says Butler who is also the founder of the group.

What makes Everyone Orchestra performances stand out from other jamband collaborations is the conducting. Butler, along with several others, facilitate the interactive jams using giant cue cards and projections which direct the musicians and audience alike.

The list of previous members of The Everyone Orchestra reads like a who’s who of jamband music and beyond including members of The Grateful Dead, Phish, String Cheese Incident and Derek Trucks, experimental guitar legend Adrian Belew and a growing legion of other stellar players.

Since the group’s composition changes from event to event, each performance is a truly unique experience.

For Smilefest, the EO unit will include Butler, Belew (King Crimson, David Bowie, Tom Tom Club), keyboardist Dave McCracken (Donna the Buffalo), vocalist Tanya Shylock (Mountain of Venus), and bassist Tye North (Leftover Salmon). Joining this talented core will be guitarist Jimmy Herring (The Dead, Phil & Friends, The Allman Brothers, ARU), drummer Jeff Sipe (Leftover Salmon, ARU, Susan Tedeschi), saxophonist Jeff Coffin (The Flecktones), fiddler Darol Anger (Psychograss), banjo hero Billy Constable (Sassagrass, Big Daddy Bluegrass Band), and mandolinist Danny Nicely (Journeyman Extraordinaire). While these particular artists have already been confirmed to appear with the Everyone Orchestra, with the high-energy appeal of this experience, there’s no telling exactly how many other festival acts will choose to jump in at the last minute.
