Yes, the new year is lurking just a mere day away! I thought it would be fun to share some of the family traditions--These all come from my mother's side of the family, the Colombians.
House must be cleaned top to bottom because the state your house is in when the new year rings in is the state it will be in for the next year, give or take a dust bunny.
Your person must be cleaned, coiffed, plucked, dressed all in new duds--right down to your knickers--same reason as above.
Wheat stalks are passed out at the party right before midnight and you carry them around to symbolize abundance in the coming year.
12 grapes--stuff all 12 grapes in your mouth right before midnight--all at once for luck (1 grape per month).
Suitcases--At the stroke of midnight, grab a suitcase and head outside. Run around the block. Yes, RUN AROUND THE BLOCK. This ensures lots of travel in the new year.
Anyone care to share their traditions? I'd love to know! Be safe and be responsible. See you next year!
Blessings

Re: New Year Family Traditions--Got Any?
Wed, December 31, 2008 - 10:04 AMwow,,, you and Pumkin are going to be busy today!!! LOL
Kajira and I like the "kiss at midnite" deal, and this will be the first year that we will be able to do that. Usually what I have done is call her from my event after I do the NYE ring in and give her a quick peck on the phone...
We do take our Xmas tree down on New Years Day... Not for luck or anything like that, just that is when we have always done it.
Hope you have a safe and sane NYE... play safe! -

Thu, January 1, 2009 - 3:57 PMChuck, you and I are the only participants on this, my little tribe. (: Thanks for sharing. No NYE gig this year? It must have been nice to have a date.
We did have a fun and safe time. Happy New Year! -

Re: New Year Family Traditions--Got Any?
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 11:32 AMPat and I burned our mini tree in our fire pit in the back yard on New Years. We then sat around and talked about things we wanted to get done in 2009. Nothing too exciting but it is a comfortably satisfying tradition. -

Mon, January 12, 2009 - 5:09 PMgeee who did you learn that one from Joey? ;-)
Kajira and I used to keep the top of our tree for the next year..we stopped on Maui for two reasons, 1- we didn't get a tree or 2- we didn't have a place to keep it.
But this year we did keep the top of our tree to burn next year.
