Yes, the new year is lurking just a mere day away! I thought it would be fun to share some of the family traditions--These all come from my mother's side of the family, the Colombians.

House must be cleaned top to bottom because the state your house is in when the new year rings in is the state it will be in for the next year, give or take a dust bunny.

Your person must be cleaned, coiffed, plucked, dressed all in new duds--right down to your knickers--same reason as above.

Wheat stalks are passed out at the party right before midnight and you carry them around to symbolize abundance in the coming year.

12 grapes--stuff all 12 grapes in your mouth right before midnight--all at once for luck (1 grape per month).

Suitcases--At the stroke of midnight, grab a suitcase and head outside. Run around the block. Yes, RUN AROUND THE BLOCK. This ensures lots of travel in the new year.

Anyone care to share their traditions? I'd love to know! Be safe and be responsible. See you next year!
That was such a fun show--Papa's always is.

I saw some great dancers who I would like to name even though I don't think they frequent this tribe, nor are they tribal: TerriAnne and Joweh!; Alana; Terri (whose last name I'm forgetting, but she teaches at WorldDance Fitness). And let's not forget Alnisa. I missed her solo, but loved her group number.

Ok, that is all the doting I have in me for now. Back to being Evil.

You spend a long while working your way up to it every year, then it's a long, action packed weekend (or week, practically) full of workshops, shopping, visiting old friends, making new ones, watching performances and (this year) trying to stay cool!

I went back to work on Monday--well, my body did. My brain was still re-living TF! It's been an exhausting week, to say the least. (:

I taught a workshop which was so much fun. I loved sharing the work EvilEye has been doing and I wish I had more time! Among the students who were all fabulous, I had the Rock Rose young ones. Those girls can dance. They were adorable, well-behaved and even thanked me after class. Thanks to all the workshop attendees for dragging themselves to a Sunday morning class. A feat unto itself. Special thanks to Noey for figuring out the sound. DJ genes are real.

Our show went well. We had a blast and after years of performing on that narrow stage, it seems that I never get accustomed to it! Maybe next year? I can't wait to see the DVD. If anyone has pictures, I'd love to see them. Feel free to post here.

As Tribal Fest nears, I become more and more excited! This year EvilEye BellyDance not only performs, but I'm teaching a workshop AND vending some goodies afterwards on the back deck of the Youth Annex building.

Performance:
Stacey, Azza, Marie and I will be performing our EvilEye ATS set on Friday night at 10:48pm. As Kajira mentioned in an email or somewhere--"proof that ATS is alive and well!". We're sandwiched between Pin-up Girl BellyDance and Princess Farhana. Can you say unruly fun?

Workshop:
Sunday at 11:15-1:15. Don't party too hard on Saturday night! Save yourself for one more day of dancing and shopping! The workshop is not sold out, so stop by and register at the door. Although I've taught at TF in the past, as a member/teacher of Kajira's format for ATS, this is the very first official EvilEye BellyDance workshop at TF--we will be covering "new" material. I will be assisted my members of EvilEye BellyDance.

I'm looking forward to sharing what we've been working on since our inception in Sept of 2006. Everything is geared towards group improv as well as both left and right hip leading (Kajira's biggest contribution to ATS, IMO). If you're not into ATS, the material can easily be adapted to choreography. We've worked hard to include movements not usually found in ATS, but are rooted in traditional/folkloric bellydance and then adapted for use in ATS by adding or changing arm/head/ribcage positioning. Gotta keep that open and uplifted look!

I will cover steps and combinations for slow, medium and fast tempo music with sensible, subtle and easy-to-remember cues. The names of the moves aren't bad, either! I am afflicted with a joy of teaching and a love of words, so I am committed to seeing that attendees not only have a great time, but learn the material in easy to swallow, bite-sized chunks. We WILL be improvising together by the end of class.

Bring finger cymbals! We'll not only go over patterns that correspond to specific steps, but (if there's time) we'll explore improvising with cymbals while we dance. It never stops.

Informal Vending:
I'll be bringing Lori's EvilBazaar to the back deck after the workshop. Take time to paw through my stuff and chat with me about class, dance, life, chewing gum, etc...I'll have all manner of various and sundry items related to bellydance. The more you buy, the better the deal! Everything must go so I can start all over again. (:

Funny thing: Last year, I called and called all day, never to get through. I got on the waiting list, though and wound up with a spot. This year, I completely forgot to call in, but got on the waiting list and wound up with the same spot as last year. Maybe next year I'll forget about the festival altogether. It could happen. And maybe I'd still have the closing spot on Friday night...who knows?

How Berkeley Can You Be? This Sunday festival was so much fun--Just the art cars alone could take all day to ponder and explore. The stage was petroleum-free and biodiesel powered, all the cups, plates, utensils, etc...were compostable and there was a woman at a booth selling garter flask holders. Now that's Berkeley!

Also on Sunday, Papa's Taverna in Petaluma. It always feels like coming home when we perform there. It's so nice to see all the regulars and hear "Opa!" while we dance.
Next weekend we only have 2 gigs on the books...Thank Goddess.

Hey everyone,
We're really excited to have the gorgeous ladies at Evil Eye performing at our event--don't miss them!
Details below.
Beth

*********************************
Electric Vardo Presents: Licky
Saturday, July 7
Doors: 10 p
Show: 10:30ish
$10-20 sliding scale
Il Pirata
2007 16th at Portrero, SF
www.electricvardo.com

Superstar Dance Lineup:
Azure
Clandestine
Dhol Rhythms
Evil Eye Belly Dance
Frederique
Freyja
Red Lotus
Plus a hula show!

DJs
Amar of Electric Vardo
Jimmy Love of Nonstop Bhangra

Licorice (Licky to his friends) is a beautiful 7-year old kitty; he is kind, gentle, and playful, and loves his "mom" Andra so much he'll let her dress him up as a bee (or the pope)…as long as there are treats afterwards, of course! You may know Andra from her tenures in FatChanceBellyDance, Ultra Gypsy, or most recently Azure Tribal Belly Dance.
Licky recently became very ill; after 2 MRIs, blood tests, a vet switch, exploratory surgery, and an extended stay in ICU, he is home now and feeling much better. Unfortunately, all of that added up to a monstrous vet bill: about $10,000! Andra is a preschool teacher and is also getting married in a few months, so Andra's closest friends have banded together to help out with the bill.
What better way to do so than to throw a belly dance benefit? We have an amazing dance lineup featuring some of the Bay Area's finest in belly dance, bhangra, and hula, plus 2 kickass DJs, and a raffle with fabulous prizes. Andra is performing twice: with the hula group, and with Azure. She and Licky thank you from the bottom of their hearts!

Hope you can make it out. If you can't make it but would like to donate, we'll have a paypal address you can send donations to.

It's finally over! And not a moment too soon, either! EvilEye and Tribal Zone had 4 gigs between Friday and Sunday, workshops to attend, pre-and-after parties to prepare for, costuming to schlepp all over the place, old friends to catch up with, new ones to meet and myriad other conditions that cropped up unexpectedly.

I hope that after you laugh at us for this next bit, you'll find a moment to sympathize as well!

By Wed of last week, one of us was getting over a cold and two of us were just starting. By Fri, a couple of us started our moons, just in time to wear ivory and gold at Rakkasah and suffer from horrible cramps! There was a coughing, congestion, cramping, bloating, constipation, it's lovely opposite, scrambling for Midol, cough drops and false eyelashes. At one point we just looked at each other and said, "You're fucking pitiful!" "No! You're fucking pitiful!" And so the weekend began!

I think the show went great! We were worried that Stacey might cough herself into projectile vomiting because her fits were so wracking! She did nothing of the sort, and right after we danced, as soon as she commented on it, the damn coughs came back with such a force I thought she might lose a tonsil.

Several of the BlackSheep herd were there to support us and snap a few pictures. It was lovely to have friendly faces in the audience. Rock Rose from Point Arena were also there (the original BSBD spinoff) and I'm always happy to see them! After the show, Stacey and I got lots of love and compliments from many of the audience members on our music, dancing and costuming. We snuck in a little bit of shopping and rushed home to watch our dvd only to find out our disc was blank! It was quite a let down! But we'll be getting a new disc in the mail soon.

On Sat morning, Stacey, Jena and I took workshops at TTD a few blocks away from the house. They were great fun and very worthwhile--if not very right-hipped! My body complained and wanted to even things out desperately! We were all still sick, but just kept plugging along with the aid of decongestants, zinc, tinctures and lots of water and even more importantly, a sense of humor.

Sat afternoon we danced at TTD and watched as many performances as we could. The stage was small, but raised and it had wings which I love. The Throwdown at the end was unexpectedly entertaining with Raven's hilarious and talented MC'ing (watch out Chuck!).

Sat night, Tribal Zone had a gig in Santa Rosa! More schlepping and driving for them! I hear all went well and tips were good! I didn't make it to Nouveau Nights, but the word on the street was that Unmata's Pony Piece was out of this world. I won't miss another opportunity to catch it.

By Sunday I was pretty tired and still sick, but there was yet another show to do! Papa's Taverna in Petaluma. Me, Jena and Marie showed up to Papa's a bit tired, but in good spirits because it's always so much fun to perform there. The crowd is always welcoming and the band...well, quirky! We were showered with money at one point and when I went out to collect tips, my basket was stuffed with money. We were trying to bow and be done, but the people sitting at the front were still intent on tipping more. Back at the table, we laughed at ourselves because, well, we were feeling looney! and because we were literally falling apart and no one seemed to notice! I had lost one of my hair clips while in a spin, then a zil flew off my hand, then both Jena and Marie skirt tucks fell out.

Eventually, finally, thankfully, the weekend was over. It was great fun and I want to thank Stacey, Marie, Jena and Azza for being good troupers (misspelled on purpose!). Now all we have to do is prepare for Tribal Fest. Woohoo!

Yoga? Gym? Running? Pilates? Visualizing perfection? What?

I am a fan of Bikram Yoga and have just started up again after a short hiatus. I've gone to 5 classes in the last 6 days and my sweat is starting to smell like ammonia. It's disgusting, but it's true. The most obvious benefits for me are improved back health, general feeling-goodness and better shimmies. When I first started, it also rocked my posture and put more energy and life into my arms.

And just so you know, I do have a job, but I have the week off so I decided to devote it to yoga.

Now your turn. What do you do??

Please join us at WorldDance Fitness and GoddessWear Boutique for Beginning ATS. I will be teaching Kajira's BlackSheep format for level 1. I'd like to teach intermediate and advanced, but I'll need to "grow" some dancers first. Even if you have bellydance experience, you'll benefit from level 1 by learning our cueing system, posture and peculiarities to this format.

Learn the basics and begin building your foundation for this unique dance. We work on all the following skills in Level 1: muscular isolations, basic movements, finger cymbals, traveling steps, turns, shimmies, slow and fast movements, cue identification for group improvisational choreography, and more.

This class curriculum repeats itself approximately every 6-8 weeks. Drop-ins are OK, but regular attendance is encouraged in order to cultivate an understanding of how ATS works and appreciate it's full impact. Each week we review the previous week's material and then add new material, learning transitions between movements as the class cycle progresses. Please dress comfortably, but no baggy T-shirts as I need to evaluate your posture. Bring finger cymbals to each class if you own them, otherwise I will provide loaner sets during class.

Who: You. You who have experience, you who do not. All are welcome.

Date and Time: Wed nights starting Jan 10 from 7:30-8:45.

Cost for one session of 6 weeks: $72 (that's $12 per class)
Cost for drop in: $15

Where: WorldDance Fitness and GoddessWear Boutique, 40 Greenfield Ave., San Anselmo, CA 94960 415-457-8787. http://www.worlddancefitness.com. Parking available.

This is a beautiful space in San Anselmo--a real life bellydance studio with hardwood floors and mirrors. I am grateful to Aruna and Dhyanis for allowing me to teach in their studio and I'm so excited to meet you all and dance together!
