Since I haven't heard any activity, I'm going to assume the group has fallen, but I'm going to try and get a list set up of people that would be interested in going out and taking pictures.

I've also posted the the reno flickr group in hopes they'll be a few that would be interested.

Printers?

I've been looking into getting a printer does anyone have any recommendations or insight?

So far I've been looking at the Canon Pixma Pro9000 and the Epson Stylus Photo R1800. I like the idea of the Espon allowing roll paper, so I was leaning toward that one a bit more than the Canon. Also are there any other brands to look at around this price range, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to getting a nice printer right now. :)

DECEMBER MEETING!

Hello everybody,

Just a reminder that F-Stop Reno will be meeting on saturday December 8th at 10:00 am. Meeting location is same as October (sorry about November) 695 Colorado River Blvd, Reno NV

Very excited to see everybody's rendition of both Halloween Eyes, and colorful junk! In addition, it looks like we are going to be hit with a significant storm on Friday (Keep our hopes up!) If this is the case, Saturday's meeting will include an opportunity to go out and shoot "First Snow" We will either hit somewhere in the Truckee Meadows if it comes down to the Valley Floor, or trip up Highway 80 or 341 to catch it in the mountains. Nothing like the first snow of the year!

So please bring your bling! (Cameras) and if you have a polarizing lens that is strongly recommended! I haven't heard from Kyle or Chris yet, but hoping we will get to see demonstrations of both a lens-baby and a 0-360 lens attachment.

I'm still hoping to be getting rid of my Epson 5500 printer. Interested parties be sure to have a car with a large (not that large) trunk. If more than one person wants the printer we'll put names in a hat.

Some fun and helpful links

It was great to meet you all today. I promised Michael I would post some links to sites I use a lot and find helpful for photography.

This photographer seems to elicit very polarized reactions from poeple (they either love him or hate him) but he was very helpful to me when it came to picking out my point and shoot, and my DSLR. I didn't completely follow his advice (he does not recommend the D80), but I had different reasons than he for picking my DSLR. He also has lots of Nikon lens reviews, and some Canon equipment reviews as well, but he is mostly Nikon. I also have printed out his free user's guide for my model camera and I refer to it quite often. This goes beyond the instr manual that just explains what each setting or feature does.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/index.htm

Another site for review of Nikon gear is http://www.bythom.com/ I just ordered his camera guide (his is $$), and if anyone wants to know, I can post my findings about how good it is, once I receive it.

My current favorite "real" artist site is Nitsa's site http://www.nonphotography.com/blog/
She eschews real cameras for $15 plastic Holgas, and 1980s or earlier Polaroids, yet her photography is one of the BEST I have seen.

Speaking of Holgas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holga
I am SOOOO tempted to make a Holgaroid!

However, if you don't mind spending $300 to turn your $1000+ DSLR into a $15 Holga, you can just buy a Lensbabies instead: http://www.lensbabies.com/

I have one, and will be experimenting more with it as time goes on. My D80 won't meter through it, because its not smart enough, but the Nikon D200 and up will (stupid D80!). This lens is manual focus and very very manual apeture (you stick apeture disks into it with a magnet).
Meeting UPDATE NOVEMBER!!!!

Hello Everyone!

It's November and I hope everyone has had an opportunity to get a good "Halloween Eyes" shot under their belt. I have to admit I've had to stretch my creative side more than my visual side of this challenge which is very different for me. I need to address our meeting date for this month. We are scheduled to meet on November 10th (2nd Saturday). Unfortunately I've had a family emergency come up the precludes my being able to host the meeting. (My wife's Uncle just passed away from a long battle with cancer. She (WE) are the executors of his estate and must travel down to San Francisco that weekend to take care of his personnel business.)

So the questions is..... can someone else host the meeting... or can we reschedule the meeting for the 17th of November? The planned meeting agenda was to have some demonstrations using various lens attachments. I'm trying to get Chris to bring his lens-baby and Kyle to bring his 0-360 and I have a fisheye attachment as well as an optica digital duplicator.

So... if you can host the meeting bounce me back real fast and I'll get the word out.... otherwise I'd like to invite everyone here on the 17th with a planned shoot afterwards... so bring your camera gear.... for myself I am a photographer again, having acquired a Kodak DCS PRO and I'm real excited about getting to test out the "improved" ISO and sensor (or so the pundits claim) and play around a bit with my S2.

Check it out. Make yourself a little setup to take macro pictures of relatively small stuff, and make it look awesome. I found this last week, and I had forgotten about it until today. I'll be trying to build one and taking pictures of all sorts of random small things for fun.

Meeting Update October

If you are receiving this message it is because you have shown interest in f-stop Reno (a new photographers club starting in the Truckee Meadows) or you joined the Tribe “f-stop Reno” which of course implies that you are interested in the same. To get off this email list, simply reply with a get me off this list type subject and I’ll drop you from the list post haste… as it were.

The second meeting of F-stop Reno is scheduled for THIS SATURDAY
October 13th, 2007
10:00 a.m.
695 Colorado River Blvd, Reno Nevada

for those of you yahoo maps challenged…
http://maps.yahoo.com/;_ylc=X3oDMTExNmIycG51BF9TAzI3MTYxNDkEc2VjA2ZwLWJ1dHRvbgRzbGsDbGluaw--#mvt=m&q1=695+Colorado+River+Blvd%2C+Reno%2C+NV&trf=0&lon=-119.796724&lat=39.508428&mag=3

cut and paste or just “click” .

It’s not too late to complete your “assignment” for the October Meeting. Those unfamiliar with the format, at the conclusion of each meeting we draw out of a camera bag a subject matter to be photographed and brought to the next meeting. It’s an attempt to get each of us to look at various photographic subject matters that we might not otherwise consider. To stretch our artistic vision… so to speak.

The “assignment” for October is “Bridge Over Troubled Water” There are 146 Bridges that cross over the Truckee River. (No I didn’t count them, I looked it up at the water district web site) PLEASE BRING A HARD COPY OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPH TO THE MEETING It’s very difficult to pass around a computer monitor, and even a bit impractical… as for using your cameras preview button, let’s just not go there!

If you don’t have a way to print out your assignment, or are not happy with the print results FEAR NOT! I have an EPSON 4000, meticulously calibrated to either Epson Matte, Red River Ultra Pro Gloss, or my 2 favorites….. Moab Lasal photo luster 270 and Moab Colorado fiber satin 245 … (OK, OK so I’m a bit of a paper GEEK) I’ll print out an 8X10 for you as a freebe… all you have to do is get me the image, either by email: mherzog@digitagraphy.net or post it somewhere we can access it, or bring it on a compact flash, SD card or other camera media…note: if you are bringing it on a sony memory stick we’ll need a way to transfer it it to one of my puters I don’t think my card reader recognizes that memory format.

One other note: If you want me to print out your picture get me the file Friday, or arrive a tad (30 minutes) early on Saturday or the entire first meeting will consist of sitting around and watching a printer whirl… not unlike watching paint dry by the way.

The meeting agenda:
10:00	10:15 Meet and greet name tags and everything!
10:15 11:00 Bridge series sharing and discussion
11:00	11:30 Brainstorming (setting up our next assignment and meeting topic)
11:30	12:30 Short meeting presentation
12:30	1:00 Brainstorming

There is a lot of brainstorming in this meeting because it is only our second meeting and we haven’t yet laid out the plans for the rest of the winter and it would be nice if everybody knew what was coming up. I had wanted to organize a field shoot either in the Galena Forest or at Ranch San Rafael Park to shoot the colors of the changing season…. But alas my camera was injured last weekend and is currently in transit to the camera hospital and I find myself without a backup L

About the meeting presentation:
Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Photographers
I have for the past 10 years been a beta 4 tester for Adobe graphic products, including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Acrobat. My reward for doing all that work was usually site license copies of the products. Recently Adobe has gone the route of the public beta testing… and those perks I used to get are drying up… however after much moaning on my part Adobe has promised me copies of Photoshop CS3 for the PC and the MAC. If Adobe comes through, I will share copies of those programs with interested individuals at the conclusion of the presentation.

The program will be a short introduction to photoshop with an emphasis on the workings of CAMERA RAW (you don’t have to shoot in RAW to utilize CAMERA RAW in CS3 it works with jpgs too!) An introduction of workflow management, or asset management, or a way to keep your files organized in BRIDGE (Part of photoshop) and last, the cool new convert to black and white function that has opened, or reopened the thrill of black and white photography for digital camera owners…

I promise this will not be a technical presentation. It will be a hands on, look what cool things you can do kinda presentation.

Any questions, comments, concerns or RSVP’s can be directed at me at mherzog@digitagraphy.net

If you are interested to know, I’ve gotten about 35 interested parties in this club, although a lot (20) have only asked what is was about and I’ve not heard from them since… about 8 people I’m pretty sure are committed to seeing this thing launch and another 10 or so I’m pretty sure are interested… so I’m hoping for a “crowd” of between 6 and 10… which is REALLY REALLY GOOD for a second meeting.

Hope to see you Saturday morning… can be reached at 775-762-2572 if you need to talk.

Since I'm a beginner (I have a Canon Rebel XT), I'm not looking for something super fancy or expensive... or new!
Does anyone have one for sale? And if not, any recommendations for a good beginner tripod?
