What do you sprout?

topic posted Thu, February 10, 2005 - 9:53 AM by  Paul

Per Michael's suggestion I looked for and found Quinoa, but it was very expensive here (in Germany).

What things do you all like to sprout? I'm sprouting things pretty much all the time; sometimes two at once.

Currently I'm sprouting some green beans. I regularly do mung beans, lentils, azuku beans, pinto, kidney, and black beans.

I'd say my favorites are mung beans and lentils. Both are great either raw or cooked. I usually don't sprout them quite as long if I'm going to use them in a recipe.

I've got some basil sprouting in the window. I wish I had more ... I'm sure the sprouts must be delicious ... but I'm going to grow them to full grow.

    Just found this tribe...

i am sprouting many things including lentils, soybeans, mung beans, wheat berries, rye berries and wild rice.

i am a vegan chef that has recently started to expand my repetoire into raw foods and thus i started to grow my own sprouts.

Lately I've been sprouting lentils, amaranth, wheat berries, and the occasional soy and mung bean. I'm trying to look for an alternative to jars (the only mehtod I've figured out yet). Any tips?

I have been using bags that I sew out of organic fiber. The small bags are great, I wet the bags fruquently and there is no slime on my sweet sprouts. Happy sprouting!

        do you use hemp cloth?

some of the sprout sites sell small hemp fabric bags which are supposed to be great.

i'd like to find a supplier of bigger hemp fabric bags which would work for sprouting

glass jars still seem really great for sprouts which need to get their leaves 'greened' at the end of the process

Well I have not used hemp yet but I plan to.
There is a great company out of Colorado called envirotextiles that is a wholesale company. I have been traveling so I have not yet been able to make a large order of fabric.
They don't sell bags only fabric. I sew my own bags and have had no problem with my sprouts growing green.
          Good luck!
