Not an alumni...

yet at least. I'll be starting law skule there in the fall and would like to get feel for the area. Just some basics: night life, good/bad parts of town, etc...

Where is the nearest place to snowboard (hopefully it's not the rockies)?
Thanks

Snowboard: You're a funny guy. I think they have something like a hill up in Wisconsin somewhere.

Bars: Murphy's. There are others, but none I recall worth mention.

Good/Bad Parts of Town: You can drive across the whole damn thing in like 10 minutes. I think some parts of urbana are less nice than others, but the only bad thing I remember is the stench of that Kraft plant on the west side of champaign. I used to walk all over the place in C-U at all hours and I never, ever, ever felt threatened or unsafe. Of course, I live in a city that had 114 homicides last year and I feel safe there too, but don't let that influence your opinion. C-U is a tiny little town with no serious crime to speak of that I remember.

Wisconsin, huh? I knew it's the great plains, but I didn't think it'd be that far to a hill. Oh well, there's always some snow-covered steps to slid down (I hope).

It's remarkably flat. You might be hard pressed to find some decent steps, even. Snow? That will be no problem. You'll be happier if you learn to ride a snowmobile.. there's tons of fields for that.

For someone used to living on the west coast, it's almost spooky its so flat. I remember when I first went there, I would actually kinda need to go inside because the horizon being so far away just made the outdoors.. too big.

Ok, the basics. It's been over two years since I graduated, but I imagine things haven't changed too much...

Night life: As you already know, bar age is 19 at CU, so that is good if you want to go to bars. Everyone who is under 21 knows someone who is 21 (or who's "ID" says they are 21...) that can get them something from the bars. Ok, good bars: Murphy's (Irish Pub) is good and friendly, and they have good food too. Brother's is pretty nice, and they have some creative shots there. White Horse - it is a little bit of a walk if you are around the main campus, but otherwise they have a great outdoor area when the weather is good. Marginal bars: R&R's - they have Mug Night, but as the years went on, it started to get kinda lame. Joes - same story about getting lame, but the females like to dance on the poles there... Bad bars: the frat bars: CO's, Kams. Stay away. I apologize if you are interested in fraternity life. No offense. The only other options for night life are house parties (ask around - they can be really fun, but usually have bad beer) or that Tonic dance club/bar, if it is still there.

The town really doesn't have too many bad areas. North of University and west of 1st street in Champaign get marginal, but campus is just fine. I walked on campus at all hours of the day, by myself and with others, and I never felt threatened.

Finally, for snowboarding, there is a place in southern Indiana called Paoli Peaks where you can snowboard (not the Rockies or anything, but probably the closest place to Chambana).

Hope U of I treats you well!

      Right on Paul, thanks.
Drinking age: not a problem, I'm 27, my wife's 28. Glad to hear no bad parts of town. My wife and I have lived in the ghetto our whole lives, and quite frankly I'm tired of the ghetto bird and having to paint over graffiti on my fence every other week.

I kinda figured from what I hear that vertical is hard to come by (especially coming from Ca and the relative vicinity of the Sierras).
I'm too old for frats, besides I went Navy for a while so that's my frat. Anyway, aren't frats only for undergrads? Although the U of I web says they have the most frats...oh well.

I'm really looking forward to getting away from the traffic, smog, and blight of urban settings.

      Thanks

I actually grew up in Champaign, but haven't lived there since I left UIUC in 1986. Suffice it to say that it's a pleasant enough town, more interesting than most towns of 100,000 people in the midwest, and there IS a cultural life because of the University. Concerts (pop and classical),theatre (touring shows routinely come through) and good movies as well.

The highest point in Illinois isn't a hill or a mountain. It's a mound. I'm not making this up. You gotta go to Wisconsin for skiing and well, it might be that you just have to skip skiing for a few years. The winters ARE cold as a witches tit as they say, but people know how to handle them, so it's livable.

Upside is that rents are pretty cheap (esp. as compared to SF or Boston where I've lived since leaving CU) and neighborhoods pretty nice. The older neighborhoods near downtown Champaign (West Side Park is quite lovely in the fall it was laid out in about 1860) and downtown Urbana are quite pleasant. Lots of older rambling houses, often cut up (some better than others) into apartments. Bad landlords can be a problem, so go to the Tenants Union and check with them about a landlord (they have a file of complaints by tenants about bad ones) before you sign a lease. It also possible to buy a house for $50,000.

Mass transit is also extremely good. As a student you'll get a free bus pass included with your student ID. That's a great deal.

It's a nice town. People are friendly and the U of I is a good place.
