Of Racehorses, Poetry Journals, and Rock Bands

I have some poet-friends who occasionally play a game in which they try to come up with names that would be equally wondrous for a racehorse, a poetry journal, or a rock band. Or something like that--I may have made up one of them, but I think it was all three.

I don't remember any examples, but I thought I'd put it out there for y'all to give it a try...

Another one o'them surveys

Actually hundreds of surveys, tests and that sort of silliness. You don't have to give them any data about yourself, except your anonymous answers to the questions. I've been able to pass all the eighth grade subjects for which they have tests, which did surprise me. The personality tests basically say back to you what you already told them, except the ones that shower you with compliments. Except this one (your ideal pet) which I found hilarious and refreshingly different--even if it is untrue (isn't it?).

Your Ideal Pet is a Cat
You're both aloof, introverted, and moody.
And your friends secretly wish that you were declawed!

Here is the link if you dare:
It's supposed to be about cigarettes but there's no reason you can't substitute any other habit you regularly indulge that costs money. Let the packs of smokes stand for drinks or hustlers or cocaine or child support payments that stopped when the kid hit the magic age, etc.

Colon Jokes for a Punner

Though it should not be Amusing, a friend of mine, an inveterate, infamous, incorrigible punner, has had his colon removed. Fortunately for those who hold him dear, he is home from the hospital and will no doubt recommence with torturing us all very soon.

He is the president emeritus of the Columbus Folk Music Society, of whose monthly newsletter I am Editor.

I plan to put a news item about Hanks' recovery in the upcoming issue... in, as it has been suggested, an Appendix.

I am collecting puns about colons.

CFMS members being, in general, very competitive punners, we have already generated lots of jokes, and I will be wielding a very light censorial hand when I write the story, but I am always up for contributions from outside this particular fold. Some degree of scatology is to be expected.

Please... discuss amongst yourselves.

When Mike told me about this tribe, I knew it was for me. I have a file in my browser's bookmarks (called 'favorites' in some browsers) called "Centre for the Easily Amused". I'll start a thread sometime and share them, not all at once but the way one would want to have a box of chocolates, a bit at a time.

For now, here the amusing Butch v Femme Test. It appears to have been written for Lesbians originally. You can adapt the results to your own sexuality or just read them to mean this is the sort of Lesbian you are (or would be). See my blog for my results.

Omigoodness, do I love my own brilliance when I find a good bargain and make it an even better one by my own cleverness.

Found a big sponge in the reduced rack for $.20. Took it home and cut it into three hand-sized pieces. Three sponges for less than $.07 apiece! No more cussing because I can't find a new sponge and the ones at the sink are all shot, and for pennies! I made my own day--well, my own afternoon--well, my own hour...

As the saying goes, "ANYONE can pay retail!"

Yeah, I'm--all together now--easily amused!

My sister's freshman year in college, her roomie called the popular sandwich cookies "Orleos" and said that when students got sick they should go to the infirmatory.

At Bowling Green State University, the "infirmatory" is (or was in the early '70s, at least) right next to the cemetery (or, if you read the "intentionally mispronouncing words" thread, the "sum-eatery"). The lore was that there was a chute that, for convenience, would shoot you from the former place right into the latter...

My Tribe- and Real-Time-Friend Cathy sang me a song with this line in it--it's a real tongue-twister because you have to say it fast. It's been taking me a lot of practice and I'm still not very good at it:

As a child, he understood the words to the Beatles song, "Michelle" (sont les mots qui vont très bien ensemble), as "Sunday monkey won't play piano song."

Intentionally Mispronouncing Words

I am Easily Amused by mispronouncing words intentionally. Like today, on the way home from the store whose name is spelled Meijer and pronounced as "mire," as one would expect, but which I always pronounce as "meejer," we turned onto Cemetery Road, which I pronounced as "sum-eatery."

I do this all the time. If the name is too boring on its own, I'll faux-Italianize it: Wendy's become Wendini's, and my companion Sandi becomes The Great Sandini. Sometimes it seems as though I'm incapable of pronouncing names as they should be.

BTW, today I saw some faux fur and wondered if it was faux fox fur...

The things people say!

Have you ever noticed that if you simply repeat back to a person something ridiculous that they've said to you, more often than not they will look with surprise at you and stumble all over themselves to say, "what I *really* meant was...." I find this much more satisfying than actually arguing with a person.

I once had a job so stifling with a boss so micromanaging (and not very smart) that I was able to amuse myself this way at her expense. She was the type who would ask you to do something, and then come and ask why something else wasn't done. "Why aren't the cartons unpacked?" I would say, pointing to the reports I was sorting. Thankfully, I was fired from that job.

When you have a job with an insufferable, dumb boss, being easily amused is essential. Somewhere around here I have a list of things I suggested Awen do to his insufferable, micromanaging ex-boss to distract him from the micromanaging. (I don't think he actually did any of them, although thinking about it was amusing!) I'll find it and post it next.

Seven amusing things to do to keep your micromanaging boss at bay while you check your important messages and tribes.

I hope Awen doesn't mind me posting these here. I sent them to him when he was trapped in a terrible job. Now that he doesn't need them anymore, maybe someone else can amuse themselves with them?

1. Put something greasy on your boss' telephone receiver and then call and hang up when he answers. That'll keep him busy for awhile.
2. Get up and go to the toilet when he comes nearby.
3. Ask him complicated questions whenever he lurks. He'll learn to steer clear.
4. Light a small fire in his trashcan.
5. Rig his desk drawer to fall out when he opens it. Do this to the one with all the little stuff in it, so that it takes forever to pick up.
6. Stuff lotsa toilet paper down the loo and flush so that when the next (victim) flushes it will flood. Maybe it will be him! You might get a whole day off for that one.
7. Eat something gassy for lunch!

I've decided that there should be a companion tribe to this one called "We Are Not Amused." So now there is. I invite everyone to join.

Actually, postings to WANA may be about amusing things. However, we are not amused by them. If you get my drift.

Fwicky Slips and Zqicky Slips

When I was an undergraduate Linguistics major, my professor, Arnold Zwicky, had us read a booklet he'd written in which he described two different ways of making mistakes. (The booklet was entitled, handily enough, _Mistakes_.)

He described the Fwicky Slip, which is what someone made when they misread the Z in his name as an F and thought his name was Fwicky, so they would repeat the mistake because it was an "honest" one until someone alerted them that the name was actually Zwicky.

And he described the Zqicky Slip, which is the category in which you would file the run-of-the-mill typo: someone hit the Q key instead of the W key. Zqicky Slips are not always repeated (unless, perhaps, like me, you have am irritating tendency to refer to the Jewsih faith when you type).

Arnold, BTW, is famous for his penguin references.

I particularly enjoy some of my Zqicky Slips, but today, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, I am reminded of the Fwicky Slip I made as a child in Catholic school when I wrote the sentence, "Mary was born without a sin on her sole."

My mom was delighted to know that Mary was born without a sin on the bottom of her foot. Guess she was Easily Amused.
