Faerun is a world within the "Realm Sphere" one of innumerable speres floating about in a gas whose name escapes me. Spelljammers fly between said spheres. Krynn is another world with it's own sphere. They both on the same material plane however. Aside from spelljamming the spheres can be breached through massive magical efforts such as the exodus of the elves described in the beginning chapters of Evermeet Isle of the elves.

Faerun is the world in "Realmspace", which is a "Crystal Sphere", and the 'gas' you mentioned is called "the plogiston"... -
