"It IS....... a puzzlement!"

First, bonus points to whoever can name the movie and actor that the above quote came from...

And now back to topic....

If you have read any of the Drizzt books, and I know almost everyone here has, he can use his globe of darkness, but not his levitation....

If you have read Daughter of the Drow, Liriel Baenre cannot use ANY of her innate talents on the surface without the use of that artifact that she took from the Barbarian dude she was shacking up with....

no idea, maybe it is the lavender eyes?
Oh, and has that ever been explored in more detail other than, "It's very unique, is all."?

Yeah, I noticed that too. It's been awhile since I read the first book, so I don't remember if she actually stayed on the surface long enough to lose her abilities before she got the artifact. Maybe if she doesn't have the artifact, she can only use the globe of darkness and the faerie fire?

Or maybe it can be explained by divine pissiness. Maybe Lloth didn't like Liriel on the surface. The Spider Queen had plans for her in Menzoberranzan, and took away her abilities to persuede her to return.

Or maybe it was a classic case of author whoopsies.

I suspect it was the third, maybe Salvatore didn't read his guidelines quite so well. The books are pretty faithful to the game system they come from, and if you leave the underdark, you lose your innate underdark granted powers. Either Drizzt has an item secreted away or his author made a mistake.
