The time has come to make posters... to let the neighborhood as a whole know this project will take place, and to spark imagination and interest. So far I've putting it out using tribe.net and handing out slips of paper with this tribe url.
One of the main things that keep people in the house at night and connected to the matrix is TV. I found an english text book on the street the other day and took out photos of Abe Lincoln and Anne Frank. I'm thinking about making a poster with these images that says "Abe and Anne never watched TV --try it for two weeks! Aug 8th-18th come play in Koshland Park." It will give other details about the free breakfast and tea parties too.... cuz everyone likes free food. And then this tribe URL.
Your thoughts?
Do you have access to a photo copied or know where we can get copies made cheap?

Re: Suggestions to get people out?
Thu, August 4, 2005 - 5:05 PMuh...hello...
I stumbled upon your intriguing group and decided to see whats going on in what seems to be a flurry of creative fun.
I work in an office and am sure I can use the copy machine. How many copies are we talking here? If its more than I think I can do without mean "were going to fire you" eyes (which are always fun) this is a good cheap site too:
www.colorcopysite.com I've used them & they are quite speedy!
I bet you could request recycled paper, also there's a copy machine on 16th between mission & valencia - ish. I can find out, it's family run.
I like tea so let me know if I can help out in exchange...ohhhh! I can make something....I like to play in the kitchen.
Good day to all and all a good night.... -w -

Re: Suggestions to get people out?
Fri, August 5, 2005 - 12:05 PMhmmm... From what I recall of the neighborhood, it is largely an African-American neighborhood, isn't it? Do you really think the best way to get folks out is to use pictures of two famous white folks? The idea I think would depend upon identification are desire of identification with the people in the poster. You might be better off using MLK and Malcolm X. Or more locally Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton (Black Panther founders).
I can get photo copies real cheap if you still need them. Only black and white tho.
Also, keep in mind, as you said, this is a low income neighborhood. A lot of people likely do not have internet access. That's the problem with depending on the internet when organizing. I tend to fall into the same trap in my own work too. Thanks for all the great work!

Re: Suggestions to get people out?
Sat, August 6, 2005 - 9:28 AMActually, the Hayes valley is becoming a high profile neighborhood, lower Hayes now sports at least three blocks of high-end trendy bohemian stores and is becoming a very pricy upper middle class neighborhood. So there is going to be a strange and possibly volatile combination of lower income and upper middle class so maybe a focus on some form of alleviating this possible friction. We might even want to do a couple of events that will foster multi-cultural unification and collaboration. I suggest one of the free events be a multi cultural art and or music night, i am sure I can round up several talented performers in this area plus I am sure many others can do the same. If we are going to build a community then we should build one of healing the rifts that have created the lack of community in this culture in the first place like segregation separatism and ignorance.
On the idea of a poster, i suggest a flyer and make it either half page or quarter page, I specialize in marketing, flyer gorilla warfare, Memetics and have allot statistics on flyers, posters and hard copy marketing and one major pro in flyers is pocket size. Not only is quarter sheet flyers easily put in the back pocket thus saved and looked at later thus more effective, they are much more cost effective. I also may have a line on cheep printing, a friend of mine runs SFraves which is a non profit large organization promoting techno music since 1980's and has over 800 members and they have some great recourses, I'll see what i can do. One last suggestion on the flyers is that we use local heroes of multicultural background, San Francisco Loves their local heroes and if say a flyer had an Afro-American and a Caucasian hero especially one male and one female i believe that would grab attention and bring more attention to this project. We probably will need to try several different approaches as we go along to find which works best and what creates a consistent draw to this awesome project.

Re: Suggestions to get people out?
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 4:59 PMGreg... yes... I ditched the Ann and Abe idea. I choose then because they are heroes know for their writing... great ideas... and they didn't watch TV. Of course they didn't have TV... it was kind of a joke.
Yes, Ash... I do want to create a shrine to our heroes... local... family members, friends.... and the greats many of us know. I'd like to have that ready for next thursday.... something we keep building on over the next ten days.
I just picked up donations of Tea and Goji berries, and will head to the park soon. Hope to see you there.
As for making more posters, lets talk about it over tea.
