I just Returned from Tallinn, Estonia this afternoon. It is a very nice city. Seeing the Russian/Soviet influenced architecture and all was very interesting. Culturally, its unique in that it appears to be built for young people. By that I mean its populated almost entirely by young, uber-cool, people who seemingly have nothing to do but look good. In spite of all that :) , a great evening was had. The food was Russian and it was delicious. The drink was vodka and those folks sure seem to enjoy it. Everyone was asking me why I don't drink. Two glasses of wine is not considered drinking :)

Slavic and Baltic peoples are hardcore when it comes to drinking vodka. A few years ago, while my grandmother was still alive, a friend of her came to visit for about half a year from Russia. She always had this super elaborate hairdo in a sort of throwback to the 50s, and was always neat as a pin. However, whenever you asked her what she would like to drink, it was vodka. She would throw those back like a hardened frat boy with no discernible different in her mien. I think there is some serious genetic tolerance for vodka going on there - even I, who am a lightweight drinker at best (a couple of glasses of red wine, my favorite, make me some combination of giggly/rosy-cheeked/sleepy) can put back some serious vodka without too many repercussions.

Peeing on the streets of Helsinki

        Fri, August 25, 2006 - 1:00 PM
I could write a New Yorker length article on the drinking in these parts.

When I first arrived, two people told me, independently, that the women in Helsinki are like men. At the time, I didn't understand what either of them meant but now its a bit more clear.

They're as aggressive as men. They drink like men. (Thank the sweet lord they don't look like men!) They're as "carefree" as men. They pee in the street like men.

Strangely, people pee like crazy once the bars start to close. Its absolutely disgusting, but its true. Full blown conversations take place while one person, male or female, is peeing. I thought these women might have been loose, streetwalker-looking types but... On Monday I went out to dinner with a young lady who is not either of those. She's an intelligent, respectable, well-traveled, college grad and an excellent conversationalist. We went to tapas restaurant then to a lounge and ended up at a danceclub. On the way home, around 4:30am, she excused herself to the park where she unloaded her bladder.

Wow, I don't quite know what to say about that. The peeing in public thing, that is.

Yes, I definitely relate the peeing in public to men. Both my dad and my bf have excused themselves to pee outside...my dad on more than one occasion RIGHT OUTSIDE HIS OWN HOUSE. I tried to find out the logic behind peeing outside when the nearest bathroom was, oh, 50 feet away, but an answer was not given. I figured it was some primordial male impulse to mark territory or something.
