Hello dear ones - answering Helen's and Dina's questions about Autumn's DVD - we have now the trailer for it, so I started a new thread so that the link to the trailer is easier to find:
www.youtube.com/watch
How do you like YouTube's new widescreen format?
Helen, Autumn's program has a different methodological approach than most beginner-level instructional programs: the words we came up with to describe the approach very briefly is "a master-level understanding of the basics" - it is very systematic, from total step one. That is why it has two very different sections:
- the 2 hr.-long technique section - a series of lessons that are very in-depth despite their beginner nature, where the basics are broken down into small distinct kinesthetic components - body angles, weight shifts etc.,
- and the practice flows, which are more free-form, entertaining, set in a great music environment.
The instructional section will work especially well for those of us who are systematic learners, trying to see common elements in diverse moves. Autumn is a true master of very clean technique - and this program presents the method she developed in the last 10 yrs. The Flows section will work for those of us who are intuitive learners, who prefer to learn by imitation - as a very clean and methodical mover Autumn is a perfect model for this type of learning - watching her movement puts the right kinesthetic ideas into your muscles!
Here is a link to the full description of the program:

For me as an instructor it was very "instructive" to get into the details of Autumn's method of teaching - so if you are a teacher, and if you have a chance to lay your hands on this video to check it out, it's worth it from methodological perspective.
Dina, answering your question about burlesque -- burlesque is a theatrical art (more than movement art), it is all about interplay of intentions, concealing and revealing, and tastefully and humorously playing with audience's expectations. It's a traditional art with a long history and that's why there are many "classic" retro elements in it that look really cool to our modern eye. Jo Weldon, our NYC star of burlesque and headmistress of the New York School of Burlesque, teaches both technique and the actual routines: She choreographs her movement, but since the emphasis is on the theater, on the reaveal / conceal and flirtation art , you can add any type of movement to burlesque: you can add heavy dance element to it - jazz, bellydance, exotic dance, whatever your personal style favors, or you can just keep it as clean and simple free-form theatrical movement.
Jo Weldon is the burlesque choreographer and instructor for the current US TV hit "The Gossip Girl" - she choreographs for the actresses in the show and will also appear in the TV episodes in the new season.

Re: Autumn's DVD trailer & Burlesque
Wed, December 17, 2008 - 2:16 AMHow great!!
Thanks so much for sharing the trailer so early :))))))))))))))))
Thank you infinitely for responding to our questions, it is more appreciated than you could imagine :)))
I like the new format of youtube a lot! I never switched to full screen because i like browsing through the comments a bit while watching, so the videos were really a bit small.
Widescreen looks like a great compromise i think.
Now the Autumn trailer looks amazin!
Like a completely different approach to bellydancing, her theatrical stance sounds really great! I hope I will be able to do the movements she teaches though, it looks pretty demanding what she shows in the clip!
But I ll for sure go for the dvd, even if it is just for watching and inspiration and keeping it for later.
Like what bothers me is some of her shimmy layering - that will be for later I think :)
what i ll definitely be able to use is some of the weight change. i am NEEDING instruction on how to take down the camel undulation to the feet my movement stops somewhere beneath the hip, and the feet "stroke" of the floor just isnt happening in my legs :)
I am so interested in seeing her apparently more theatre/modern dance view on bellydancing. For sure a great enrichment!
I ll also be looking forward to the new tribal and hip hop fusion styles you will be putting out soon :))
also the pop flutter shimmy or what it is called sounds interesting. a "Pure" drum solo instruction or also some fusion?
Finally I ll need to get my hands on your rhythms dvd first, Neon - Mala s blog is full of so much praise (malabhargava.com)!!
As for burlesque - thank you for the illustration :) i felt drawn towards it after seeing some bits and pieces by Dita von Teese and Princess Farhana. Now after your explanation I know what fascinated me - my favourite movie as a teen was Rita Hayworth s Gilda, where she dances, and takes off only one glove in such a magical way that it caused a scandal back then :)
I like this old Hollywood, glamorous Pin up, feather boa kind of taking off something, kind of teesing between revealing/hiding, it s "old school", classy, fascinating...
I m glad WDNY produces some exciting programs in this direction.
It s so great to have these exciting new art forms - like so far there has not been much going on in the burlesque direction (I am put off by the aerobic stripping kind of dvds out there so far.. that s NOT what I am aiming for :) ), plus hip hop fusion with bellydance can sometimes be seen on mtv i guess, but there is no instruction so far I think.
So great fresh ideas again, I am looking forward to the new WDNY year :)
i would love to see more Neon performances! I enjoyed your performances on the Golden Apple very much. Before seeing them I had thought I would not be into modern bellydance, but you "converted" me :)
I guess the Fantasy Bellydance will be amazing!
Big bowsat (kiss) from overseas to the lovely Neon!!

Re: Autumn's DVD trailer & Burlesque
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 4:24 AMI am so excited for both, I can hardly stand it. I love technique, and stress it with my students, so Autumn's will be great, and I love burlesque. One day, before I die, I WILL be in a burlesque show again (this is my 'recapture my youth' moment, you know?). I'm so glad that the general public is getting the idea that stripping and burlesque are two separate entities (not that anything is wrong with either, but they are separate), and with WDNY videos being probably the most acceptable to the public behind Natural Journeys which is in EVERY grocery store health section I go into, secretly you know someone prim and proper is going to be locked in their living room with the blinds down practicing when no one's looking. I fear that person may be my own mother, but..... -

Re: Autumn's DVD trailer & Burlesque
Tue, February 3, 2009 - 2:12 PMI'd just like to say--WOW! Autumn's new DVD is a revelation. Go WDNY! I'd like to write a full review in a little while. I hope that it really gets out there. It's the perfect thing for the serious dancer AND the beginner... who knew that was possible? I often prefer performance DVDs to instructionals (just personal--how I learn) but this is an exception. -

Re: Autumn's DVD trailer & Burlesque
Wed, February 4, 2009 - 5:55 AMI have LITERALLY been so engrossed in my copy that I haven't had a chance to even email Autumn to let her know how BRILLIANT the DVD is...for those who love a scholarly approach, this is fantastic! To those who just wanna dance...perfect! The music is magically all of my favorite songs...even ones that I thought were obscure! Autumn breaks down movements AND concepts into wonderful verbal and physical phrases that are organic to the dance and the dancer...I honestly can't say ENOUGH about this DVD!!!
