Luscious Review

I just posted this to Amazon... thought I'd post it here too!

Did we really need another bellydance-based workout? I wouldn't have thought so, but Neon, as usual, has gone and proven my expectations wrong.

"Luscious" is an exquisitely made program, with more good qualities than I can enumerate. The costumes and setting are gorgeous -- nothing like the typical brightly-lit aerobics studio -- and Neon advises you at the beginning to dress up for it and join the three dancers here in making the movement special. This is the kind of thing that sounds cheesy, but I did it, and it makes sense: how will you forget about bad body image or those extra pounds if you're wearing ugly workout wear? Dressing up makes you feel like you're dancing, not punishing yourself.

The instruction itself is taught in sections themed "Circles," "Infinity Loops," "Undulations," "Hip Accents," "Shimmy," and "Body Line." Each dancer leads two of the sections: she stands at the front and her voiceover describes the movements to be done. What I really like about this is that the sections weren't assigned randomly; instead, each section bears the particular dancer's imprint, and showcases her strengths. It's subtle, but you start to notice that Neon leads complicated, quick-changing combinations, Blanca shows her wonderful, large, and sensuous movements, and Sarah Skinner adds an upbeat Turkish feel to the shimmy section. This made the instructors seem much less like exchangeable dancing bodies, and much more like teachers with particular areas of expertise.

The movements are varied, and quite a few combinations are introduced and repeated from two to six times. This is not a "four of this and four of that" drill. In fact, I would suggest that complete beginners start with a different video. This would be great for advanced beginners like me, who are not expert enough for a complicated choreo with tons of layering, but get bored when everything comes in fours and is repeated ad infinitum.

All along, the dancers offer tips on putting emotion into the steps, on maintaining form, and on making movements deeper and stronger. While the dancing is rarely fast-paced, the slowness of the movements is often more challenging and grueling. The workout made me sweat (though it might not make everyone), but more importantly, it challenged me to maintain grace, form, and muscle control while learning the combinations. I couldn't believe it when the forty-five minutes were over -- it felt like fifteen!

If you have weak knees, you might want to be careful with some of the lunges and plies; on the other hand, there aren't a lot of them, and they're done slowly enough that you can be careful. I'll also repeat the warning that this might be a little hard for complete beginners who aren't already good at picking up choreography. However, the video does have a well-indexed instructional section which describes all the movements used in the workout. As a step up, there's a version of the workout with music alone, and no voice over.

In case my enthusiasm wasn't clear enough, I really think WDNY has a winner with this video. It's simple, but also simple enough to do regularly and to grow into. At the same time, even once you have learned the step combinations, adding graceful arm and handwork (to say nothing of being aware of facial expressions, head positions, and dancer's poise) poses an extra layer of difficulty. And finally, the movements are, quite simply, beautiful. You will be happy to be dancing.

Atisheh, thank you!!! - it's a thrill that "Luscious" deserved such a commendation from you, and, for me, a major relief to know that in creating it we were on the right track!

It's well-deserved, Neon. I can really see this being the video I use when I'm feeling lazy but I just want to get up and dance -- a new default program. I did it on what had been a really miserable day, and the dancing made me cheerful again.

I have some more reviewing to do and to post, but I'll just say this for now: When I looked at the list of DVDs planned for the spring (this was back in December), I kind of thought to myself, "I don't get it, I don't get what she's doing." And having seen the videos as they came out, one by one, I've become totally convinced. I think you and Michelle Joyce are both setting new standards, not only for quality products but for innovation in teaching and video design. I sometimes have the feeling that I'm being overly enthusiastic in these reviews, but it's really the excitement of seeing how differently each video is conceived.

atisheh, thanks a lot for the detailed review!!!!
    sounds SOOOO great :)))
actually, the dressin up i learnt during a stay in NY and the classes there. I took only 2, but in all of them, the dancers wore costumes, beautiful skirts, choli tops, and beautiful belts or hip scarves. they looked like real ladies :))
i came back to here, and wore similar things to class - and was looked at like an alien . even the (Arab) teacher dresses in ugly workout gear and a dull Spanish style scarf (to avoid noise i guess).
it s SUCH a different feel to be dressed like an Arab princess for dancin.. how great they teach that too.
and thanks for the hint with the knees.. i ve got bad knees :-(

Ha, I'm glad that spoke to you. Well, I have bad knees and a bad back, so I'm super-conscious of anything that stresses them. I didn't do the plies as deeply as I could have on this video. Then again, I'm not in pain today, and I would be if things had gone wrong.

I also had to fake my way through the back arch, since I hadn't watched the instructional section before doing the workout, and didn't know how to do it properly. I'll be reviewing it before doing the workout again.

I usually don't like to be dressed up for workshops, but this video didn't even feel like a workshop -- it really felt like dancing. That's why I thought it made sense to look the part, even though I wasn't using a mirror and there was nobody else in the room!

I am soooooo jealous of anyone who already has a copy of "Luscious" - I'm counting days until it's release!

I really LOVE the idea of being encouraged to dress up to work with this dvd. It's so much fun to wear costumes to class. Sadly, however, that trend seems to be dying out around my area which is a real bummer. Instead sparkles and coins, most teachers now seem to want their students to wear only yoga pants/tank tops or unitards with very little "adornments" of any kind. It sure takes the fun out of belly dance classes if all you can do is dress as if you are going to the gym.

actually, as i said, the way you describe it was my "regular" experience.
when i took my (only) 2 classes in the US, i liked their attitude soooo much with the glitter "solely" for class! it s really so much fun. back home i was the alien in class, and could not "convert" the others - but didnt care, as I knew how much better it felt :))
actually, my teacher grinningly said i had improved recently when i did the dressing up :D so it sure has a motivating effect!
how sad ppl are steppin away from it where you live..
i admired this attitude really a lot! like, if you re doin something, do it THE RIGHT WAY. i thought this to be very American :)

I feel compelled to "bump" this thread. I received my copy of Luscious yesterday. I was teaching last night so I couldn't do the workout but I did watch the version of the workout with just the music (btw, that's something that I like to do before starting to work with a DVD: watch it first to know what to expect).

I bought this DVD along with "Bellydance: The Next Level with Jenna" I haven't watched this DVD yet. I really made the purchase of this one DVD after requesting some suggestions for some DVDs that would help me improve my cabaret skills (the main style of dance that I've been doing for the past 4 years has been tribal). I didn't want a beginners DVD because I know my cab technique still but I needed some ideas of move advanced moves.

However, I ordered the DVD through borders.com and I would get free shipping for an order over 25$ so, after watching the trailer for Luscious, I decided to purchase it.

Well, so far, it has exceeded my expectations. I don't think that it is for belly dance-naive people, though, as Atisheh has said. However, if you have some belly dance experience, you will get a whole lot out of it. I think that it would be a very good staple in a DVD library for any skill level, actually. The workout is very extensive and I strongly believe that one can never drill basic stuff enough. The workout is also NOT boring. Heck, I was not doing the moves and I was mesmerized. Afterwards, I was walking through our house and caught myself doing some of the combos already! lol

Anyway. Great DVD. A must have.
