Dear friends, in March (March 25) World Dancce New York (www.worlddancenewyork.com) is releasing 3 instructional dvds from our upcoming Fantasy Bellydance series - I will post more information as soon as I have detailed descriptions of each program.

I've uploaded the DVD covers to our Tribe album and here is a brief overview:

Each DVD teaches 3 dances by 3 instructors - a mix of classic bellydance, fusion, Tribal , and Gothic.
The level is intermediate-advanced.
The dances conjure up evocative archetypal images, and focus on story-telling through dance.
Along with a performance cut, demonstration and break down of each choreography, there are various additional features in each instructor's section - such as tips on props use (hand veils, sword, Isis wings), expression and projection, creating sacred space for dance, treating dance as a personal ritual, dance as an inward journey, and other.)

1. FANTASY BELLYDANCE: MYSTERY - transformation, secret realms, illusive mystery with a dark edge:
Dance 1: Serpent (Neon)
Dance 2: Shadow - Tribal (Sera)
Dance 3: Phoenix (wings of Isis) (Ayshe )

2. FANTASY BELLYDANCE: DESIRE - sensuality, passion, enticement, goddess:
Dance 1: Nymph (Blanca)
Dance 2: Salome - Tribal (Naraya)
Dance 3: Temple Priestess - Tribal (Darshan)

3. FANTASY BELLYDANCE: MAGIC - regal presence, secret knowledge, powerful spell

Please save a corner in your heart for this amazing series!

  • I got my dvds last weekend and all I can say is WOW!!! Neon you've done it again!!!

These are must have dvds for any dancer - not just those interested in Fantasy Bellydance. These choreographies are to die for. The wonderful part about them is that, even if they are beyond my current skill level, I can take individual elements of the dances and spice up the beginning choreos that I have "outgrown".

I also love how each dancer tells the story of their dance and then discussed how to tell story through dance. All the instruction is precise, easy to understand and well presented. In short, these dvds are fabulous mini-workshops with some of the world's greatest bellydancers and should be in every dancers dvd refernce library.

Thank you again Neon!!! Now I can't wait for the Fantasy Bellydance performance dvd to be released this summer!
    • I reviewed them, and I just love them. The choreographies are not in my style, but there are at least 3 things I can use from EVERY choreography, and how many times can we say that after we fork out $50 for a workshop? The performances are great, the costumes are lush, the concepts are really interesting.

But, Neon, one question--in the Serpent, when you perform it in the choreography part, you have different shoes on than in the performance part (leading my German friend to say, 'is she in socks?"). Just out of sheer curiosity, why the shoe change?
      • Dear ones, thank you for your feedback, ind words, and reviews! It was one of our most challenging projects, and I am thrilled that it came out well and pleased you. The workshop comparison is what comes to my mind as well - bec. not only the styles, but the instructional methods featured in this series are so different. I totally agree that you don't have to master entire choreographies to benefit. It is about mastering and appropriating things that work best for your body and style. The Fantasy series is a rich palette of styles and dance vocabularies to play with and choose from as you are working on distilling your own style and repertoir of movement. While beginner approach is all about absorbing and repeating whole categories of moves, at this more advanced level learning is about selecting and deciding what each individual combination or flourish can do for you as a dancer. I am glad you liked the "Fantasy, " story-telling aspect -- it was certainly a big inspiration for all of us as we were creating our instructional pieces.
        Thank you, again!
Rom, the shoe - LOL - my piece was filmed at the Merce Cunningham studio here in NYC, on marley floor, on which you can't dance barefoot: you totally stick to it.
