Just a reminder that Bozenka will be in Charlotte, NC, teaching 2 full days of classes geared for all levels, from beginner to professional. There will be a hafla on Friday night, July 11th, and a fantastic gala show of world dance performers on Saturday including Gina of Atlanta, Lisa Zahiya of Asheville, Chris Thompson and the Cultural Ensemble (African), the Pacific Arts Troupe (Chinese), Magic Hips, and Spirit of the Lotus, just to name a few... and of course, BOZENKA!

Bozenka's opening dance at Raqs Britannia

WOW - she opened the show on the saturday night last weekend and she was incomparible. Awesome music and exquisite dancing. I also had the chance to do her 'all the shimmies in the book' workshop which was fabulous. She is probably my favourite of the BDSS girls.
I wish i knew the music she danced to as one of them was pure sass! gorgeous stuff. Thanks Bozenka for being awesome!!

Oh... and later on when Natacha Atlas was playing in the other hall, the BDSS girls came to watch, Bozenka included who appeared to be a big fan- and Ozgen (a very popular turkish dancer here in the UK - bloke), he persuaded Bozenka to dance with him amongst the rest of us and THEN he got up on stage with Natacha and insisted Bozenka got up there with him! It was stunning watching them dance together. Both in their jeans and casual stuff, but looking incredible!!

Bozenka's secret...

I would like to know so much how she makes that her hips look so loose when she dances. They really dance! I haven't seen anything better, her drum solos are the best I know. It looks as if her hips where directly connected to the drum. She said she always improvises. And you say she always shimmies. She lets go but is always there when there's an accent. Truly phenomenal.
Haha the workshop in december in Brussels is already booked, no chance. A dvd maybe? Hipwork, drum solo, or improvisation...

(or on beauty and elegance, for she specializes in that, too).

I just watched clips of her drum-soloing yesterday, so I just had to sing her praise...

First: a happy new year for everyone!

Second: i have some news to share! on 9th and 10th december, bellydance superstar Bozenka is teaching in Leuven (the workshops are all fully booked though, sorry!).

however, i'm very happy to be able to announce that she will also be dancing for us, in Brussels on the saturday evening!

Sorry for the late post; I thought the other "Bozenka Workshop" thread had a note about this, and I just realized it doesn't.

My teacher, Kaeshi, of Bellyqueen, is hosting Bozenka and Amina in New York City on the weekend of September 8th & 9th. She will also perform with Bellyqueen members and workshop students on Saturday evening.

Workshops are $45 to $70, with discounts available for multiple purchases, and/or for payment before September 1st.

Details are as follows:

Saturday Sept 8th 12-3pm
"DRUM SOLO TIPS FOR TOP DANCERS" w Bozenka
Learn how to make your drum solo the highlight of your performance with helpful tips from Bozenka. She will guide you through a wide variety of shimmies, locks and accents that will enhance the look of your drum solo performance. Strengthening drills and repetition will aid students to break through difficult movements. Feel empowered with knowledge and new moves when taking this course with world renown, Bellydance Superstar Bozenka.

8pm Show at Je'Bon
Featuring Bozenka (Miami) and Amina (Germany)
plus performances from workshop participants.

Sunday September 9th 12.00-2.00pm
"REACHING NEW HEIGHTS” w Bozenka
Bozenka will give each student specialized attention on Transitions, Execution of movement, Aesthetics and Musicality. This is what she likes to refer to as “T.E.A.M.” – To take your dancing to a higher level; awareness of all of these elements is essential. Let Bozenka guide you through exercises (dance combinations) that will help you project better posture, strengthen your articulation of movements and put a spark into every performance. This challenging class will also incorporate improvisation to unleash self-expression and will focus on musicality.
*Veil and finger cymbals required for this course

2.30-4.30pm "RAKS ASSAYA SAIDI CANE" w Amina.
Dancing with sticks and canes is a traditional form of expression in Egyptian village dance. Amina will teach authentic folkloric steps, as well as methods to spin, twirl and strike the cane.
Please bring your own cane/s.
Extra canes will be provided if you don't have any.

I know the workshops are filling up quickly. As many of you know, Bozenka is an amazing teacher; I took another BQ-sponsored workshop with her last year and was very impressed by the individual attention she gave the students. She was able to perceive and encourage each dancer's unique style and personality in a way that is rare -- especially in the limited environment of a weekend workshop.

And, besides, she's generally awesome. :->

I hope all is well and that you are well. I've been working like crazy on the final touches of my new book "40 Days and 1001 Nights". It has been more work than anyone can imagine but is coming out great! It should be ready some time this summer

Friday, May 11, 6:30-8:30pm I'll be teaching a workshop about dancing to the Semaii rhythm loaded with technique and history.

Sat., May 12, 2-5pm I am teaching a workshop in using ethereal and earthy energies in your dance. Of course, we'll be dancing a lot!

For these workshops, I'll be using a Semaii cd that has lots of versions of Lamma Bada as well as one that just came out called "House of Taarab" with a great band who playse music from Egypt's "Golden Age" (1930's to 1950's). Monday, May 14, I will teach a workshop entitled "Tamalyn Dallal Technique" also at the Lotus Dance Center. Make sure to bring your veils and zils for this one. 7-9pm

May 17-20 is the much loved Orientalia Festival and workshop series. This has been a yearly and sometimes twice yearly event since 1994, but now it is the last one. Orientalia involves over a year of planning, fundraising and doing paperwork. I have organized this one and some of the others while overseas or out of state, and they have always been a treat!

The festival, Friday May 18, 7-9pm (FREE) Special guest artists are: Mohammed Shahin of Egypt. He will be performing "Double Assaya" (stick dance from southern Egypt), Nubian, (Arab- African dance from Aswan), and the magnificent "Tanoura" (Whirling Dervish with a giant weighted skirt- cape that has to be seen!). Our other star, Ahmet Luleci from Turkey is an extremely sought after performer of strong and masculine Turkish folkloric dances. Back just for Orientalia is the much loved dancer and teacher who moved to Virginia a year ago, Shahar. Sevdije who lives in Tampa is of Albanian-Turkish heritage and will share her unique style of dance. From Gainesville, the beautiful and talented Najmah will dance, accompanied by Flamenco guitarrist, Goliath.Michigans Asianne, will fuse Asian and Middle Eastern styles, Alessandra from Costa Rica, Francesca, Portia, Nathalie, Roshanna, Amalia, Xiomara, the Shri Shambala Dance co., Bellycraft, and Bozenkas Bellydance Academy troupe will grace the stage.
Orientalia 2007 is dedicated to Men who dance, and invited artists include Andruz, Amrit, Harissa, and Jose (and maybe some special surprises).

We need to get more active on this tribe..........I'll start.....Does anyone know any of the music that Bozenka uses on her performance dvd. I think that drum solo she does, --I think it was the NC performance, anyway it begins Bozenka from Miami in big letter across the screen,--is very unique, it sounds a bit industrial. Does anyone have any information about that song she uses. Or any other for that matter. I love the music she chooses.......

Bozenka's performance dvd

This dvd is well worth the money, it has lots of Bozenka's performances, from all the way back to 2000. She was destined to be a star from the very beginning, it's very obvious..... What would it be like to be taught by this master performer? I can only imagine. Her hip movements and undulations are truly body art in motion, and I can't believe how many moves she incorporates into one song. I've only watched a 1/4 of the dvd, and I'm truly blown away. If you can, you should get this awesome dvd..................but it will make you want to practice, practice, practice.

Tales of the Sahara Choreography DVD

I bought this dvd from Bozenka's website and had no idea that it was a supplement to one of her workshop choreographies. When I first got it, I thought, OMG, I'll never get it, it's not broken down at all. It's so intricate and so many moves and turns. So I put it aside thinking maybe the next time I pick it up, I'll be able to follow it better. So I set it aside and kind of forgot about it for a month or so. Last Sunday I was going through my dvd's and I ran across it so I popped it in the player and sat and watched and thought about it for a while. Then I had the idea of running the beginning part over and over and trying just to pick up those moves. I was at it for a couple of hours and actually got farther than I thought I would. Running and rerunning, reversing and playing over and over.....Anyway, I've decided to keep at it til I get through the whole dvd. It repeats in sections, so that's good. I actually sat down and wrote down every single move watching from the front view. Quite a few pages later, I decided just to do it a little at a time. Anyway, just thought I'd let anyone know that is interested in buying the dvd, she has a lot of good moves in that particular choreography that could be used in improvision as well.........food for thought.

I have a question for Bozenka.... do you have a prefered photographer for your publicity shots and 'studio' type shots e.g the beautiful shots on your site, I am sure you have a style you prefer and perhaps even one person you like to use. if so could you share your preference? (if that isnt too rude that is)

Silly question I know but photography is a hobby of mine and i am curious why people who get a lot of pics done like the photographer they go to and what style attracts them to that person or persons.

question for Bozenka

Just a thought,
Bozenka do you prefer to dance to choreographed music or to ad-lib as you go? I was watching your DVD and was wondering how your dances were prepared. Do you do your own choreography (hope that is not an insulting question) or does someone prepare it for you? Also how long does it take you to create and learn the average choreographed piece?
Just being nosey and thought I would put the question out there.

Hello all,
I just joined this tribe because I just love the way Bozenka dances I cant believe how much she looks like she is dancing on air and her arms....no matter how hard I try or practice my arm movements still look like they are flayling around in the wind lol.

anyway my question is I have been watching the BDSS site for tour dates in my area...MINNEAPOLIS... but I cant get any info, it looks like they are coming here but no info is posted anywhere that I can find. I have tried to contact BDSS and dont get any responce to my messages I have also tried the ticket vendor for the location listed but still no luck. does anyone have any insite into the tour dates/locations? I would so much love to see them even if Bozenka is not in that particular show but arrrgggghh cant find the info. :-)

and oh one more thing could someone tell me the correct way to say BOZENKA'S name is it said like BO-SEN-KA or maybe BO-YEN-KA I am not sure if the Z is a 'ya' or a 'z'

I first saw Bozenka perform at the Ahlan wa Sahlan competition this past June/July 06. I was just amazed at how intricate and precise her shimmies and hip articulations were. Just AMAZING!!! Could anyone tell me the type of shimmy she uses/teaches? What I loved about it is how loose and fast it was ! It was amazing how she was able to keep a full range of motion and still move that fast!! I cant wait to study with her!

that a tribe was started in honor of her. I saw her briefly at the BDSS show in Toronto and told her about the tribe. She was sweet about it and left me for a minute to go and get me one of her buttons. That definatly made my whole night. I did get a picture of her and I together but unfortunatly, I look like death warmed over in it! It's that scary :( but she looks stunning of course :)
Anybody else collecting buttons from the show? I heard that there was a mech table with them but I never got a chance to get to it because I was walking around meeting all the beautiful dancers. My first pin ever was from the EDBD tribe. I wear it proudly on my jacket everyday. My sweet friend Jenna bought me a pin from a Rachel Brice show too. Buttons and pins are so much fun to collect. I ordered a bunch of EDBD buttons and give them to all my dance sisters :)

I saw Bozenka for the first time @ BDSS at the Aladdin Theater in Portland OR a few days ago...She is something else. When she came out for her first number, it was all I could do to stay in my seat! She looked SO beautiful in those Isis wings that I couldn't keep my eyes off her. I had the pleasure of speaking with her briefly after the show,and shes just as beautiful & amazing eye to eye as she is up on that stage. I truly hope to see her again next year.

I just joined and I am one of her new fans. I saw her at the BDSS show and was blown away! First of all, she's gorgeous and she moves like water! I went to the show not knowing who she was and was amazed. I have seen a lot of the dancers perform before and have never seen such beautiful personal style. She's very graceful and I love how she incorporates Egyptian styling. She is a complete professional and it shows!!!!

Shimmy-a-thon 2006 planning is underway- mark your calendars for Sept 23rd. Last year's event raised over $16K for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and we are hoping to raise $20k this year.

As you know, Miles Copeland had an Embedded Reporter contest last month. I won the contest and am going on tour with the Bellydance Superstars for One Week! That week begins on 11 February (this Saturday).

Since the idea for the Embedded Reporter seemed to come from Tribe, I'm asking for your input: What do you want to know about the Superstars? Curious about the touring life? The practice time? Who plays practical jokes? Does Barbara Copeland really run the world?

San Rafael 2/4 Workshops - Bozenka and Sharon Kihara

Bozenka and Sharon Kihara are teaching workshops on 2/4 prior to the 2/4 San Jose show (and the day after the San Rafael Show) in Cali at World Dance Fitness. A few slots (not many, so step on it!) are left.

All the worshop info is at www.bellydancesuperstars.com in the calendar section, or at www.worlddancefitness.com. Aruna and Dhyanis will take your credit card info over the phone.

Bozenka is teaching double veil, and Sharon is teaching Tribal Fusion with a Suhaila Salimpour technique basis (so the butt-kicking will ensue...that technique is tough!! But beautiful!! And so worth it!!).

Anyway, I've taken a workshop with the lovely Bozenka before and have found her to be a beautifuly, clear, generous instructor (not to mention that she taught a choreography that I still use - how many people can say that?), and, although I have no Sharon Kihara experiences to share, I've heard nothing but good from those who have.

Hope ya'll can come.
