I will have already learned some basics from the "Art of Bellydance" set. And there is some instruction on zills that I can add to what I already know. So if I can only buy two DVD's at a time for now, I'm guessing that I would benefit most from Volumes One and Four. (As opposed to buying Volumes One and Two or One and Three.

There is no tribal class nearby that fits my schedule right now so I most likely won't have any other people to dance with for awhile.

The Shining Cloth - Objects for Sale - Cross Post
First, I apologize if this is inappropriate, but as "The Shining
Cloth" was a watershed book to some of us folks, I thought the
attached message might be of interest to folks who are working on their drag.

I'm going to post this to as many off the raks sharqi groups as I can find, so please forgive the duplication if you see this post elsewhere.

By way of background, Victoria Rivers of UC Davis wrote "The Shining
Cloth" a few years back. As many of you know, it's an incredible
resource for ethnic costume and tribal dancers. I practically wore mine out
when I was making a tribal belly dance tassle belt a few years back for a pal.

Victoria let me know recently that she is selling off part of her
collection. This is a rare opportunity to acquire some the pieces
pictured in the book. If you don't have a copy of the book, this
website might be of interest as a preview.

shiningcloth.ucdavis.edu/

It is set up a little oddly, but you can navigate through it if you
have patience.

Again, please forgive if this is an inappropriate post for this group. I'm not a tribal dancer, but I do have a tiny bit of cred as I used to babysit Suhaila Salimpour when she was a youngin' at the Childrens' Dell at the RPFN in the early 70s, was a big Bal Anat and Baba Ganoush fan at that time, helped Kajira source some stuff for the Tribal Bible, and have done my share of shisha embroidery (and have bloodied fingers to prove it) for a friend who studied with Fat Chance.

Here's Victoria's e-mail to me. Please note her e-mail address at the
end if you'd like to contact her.

<<I am sending you the attachment of my postcard and sale info in
text in case you can please spread the word. I know bay area people
are scared of Sacramento in the summer, but we never know what kind
of temperatures we'll have and my house/studio is air conditioned.
Thanks for your help. Maybe I'll see you? All the best, Victoria

I am having a major de-accession sale on the weekend of August 4 and
5 at my studio in Sacramento. The sales continue in Portland, OR,
then Mendocino and Arcata, CA.

I will be selling many pieces that were depicted in The Shining
Cloth: Dress and Adornment that Glitter, as well as many other world
textiles used in teaching and research, some Southeast Asian baskets,
miscellaneous handicrafts and jewelry collected over the years, some
wonderful Sind and Swat furniture, plus some of my artwork.

Many thanks. Victoria

UC Davis Professor Victoria Z. Rivers

I have taken a few tribal classes just this year. I would like to get a Fat Chance video to learn the combos and the cues and the names of them, but I don't know which one to get. Is vol. I "tribal basics" more teaching of each individual movement, or is it combos and cues? Or should I go with vol. 5 "cues and transitions? Don't get me wrong, I've heard great things about all the FC videos, I jusst don't need another drill video. I would like something that will show me combos I can take and incorporate into my performing.

Save the date! On Friday Feb. 2, 2007
we will be hosting a talk with Will Tuttle, PH.D. author of The World Peace Diet.
This book is, without exaggeration, the most thoughtful piece of writing that I have ever come across. It's convincing in so many ways. Dr. Tuttle patiently explains the connection between the way we treat animals and the way we treat each other, ourselves and the environment. It answers every question about the vegan lifestyle in pure journalistic style, complete with notes and references. It is realistic in detail, but instead of leaving you feeling defeated by the enormous task at hand, it opens up a world positive outcome.
For more information about The World Peace Diet and Will Tuttle, visit <www.willtuttle.com>
