At Cairo Carnival everyone was talking about Jaynas Tribal Fusion dance "The Sultana and the surfer". Her boyfriend is a pro surfer, and he has been learning the dumbek. He started out drumming and she was brought in fully dressed on a surfboard!
Jayna also performed last week in San Diego for the first time purely improvisational style, with celebrated (especially by the musicians!) dancer Wendy Tylka ( wendytylka.com ). If I hear of any more gigs with advance enough warning of the venue and date, I will be sure to let you all know!

Sun, July 2, 2006 - 12:56 PMJaynas brothers are Solomon and David Feldthouse, the two sons of Suleyman feldthouse the Partner of Uncle Mafufo in "Shirocco" the long time Cali band. The amazing thing in a way is that it took this long...she is also cousins with several really great dancers.
I think that Jayna was lured into the Bellydance world, away from her Modern and Jazz roots by watching a performance by "Desert Rose", maybe even at Cairo Carnival several years ago (not sure)..
She has this really whimsical approach to the dance that should work well with improvisation. So far it was a one-time thing. Wendy has been Belly-hooping lately, so I can only imagine where this could all go.

Wed, January 3, 2007 - 12:58 PMI recently saw video of Jayna's "Sultana and the Surfer" performance and it was definately creative, fun and a beautiful performance, but it was not tribal fusion. It was still Jayna's classic and alluring style. -

Thu, January 4, 2007 - 1:08 PMI was at the Cairo Carnival by the stage during this performance, she was awesome!! I took ton's of pictures and even gave her a copy of all I had taken of her performances while she was in San Diego. She taught a drum solo class not too long ago in San Diego. That was a great class. I am honored to have gotten to meet and learn from this talented woman.

Fri, January 5, 2007 - 8:37 AMThanks Kami for pointing out that Jayna is not a tribal dancer. She is straight up sequins and grins. Her veilwork in particular is classic cabaret. She has a really special quality when she dances...I hope to see the video.
