Sonia totally ROCKED at Raqs America this weekend!! Such grace and elegance!! I also had an opportunity to talk with her for about 15 minutes. So down to earth, which makes her even more beautiful!! I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to take her workshop (time change), but if Raqs America happens next year, I will be right in her class!!!

Sonya's hair

Does anyone know how she gets her hair to look so curly when it is so long? I have similar hair, but anytime I try to curl it - blah! It ends up looking droopy before I even perform. Last time I saw the BDSS I couldn't stop looking at her hair- she looks like a hair commercial!

Sonias costume on "Escape from Cairo"

I love Sonia's costumes on the Solos of Monte Carlo-DVD. Of course the red and turquoise-one, but this is out of reach for me. On her second performance I also love the costume. I have a similar bedlah and need a skirt to it. I'd like to sew one like the one she is having, black satin with chiffon at the sides. I wonder if any part-time seamstress would be able to tell me whether this skirt is half-circle or full circle or any hint of if this is tricky to sew. I'll yet try to find a picture of her wearing it but maybe some of you know that costume.

surprise, guess what...?

I went to Sonia's workshop last Sunday. It was my first workshop from her. In her style of teaching she went over the movements in such a manner that I realized how much I rush through a lot of things. It was a positive learning experience.

I talked to Sonia on a break and reminded her about her tribe of fans. I've met her twice before when the BDSS came through on tours in Tacoma and Seattle. Her eyes grew big when it clicked who I was. She thanked me and said (SURPRISE), that she's visited here (the Fans of Sonia Tribe) and looked around a little. She is VERY grateful towards everyone. A big thank you to you all for supporting her! However, she is not on the computer much and isn't particularly internet savvy. But regardless, it was good news. Big grin!!!

Hello all of you lovely dancers! the AMAZING BDSS will be here in Buffalo on Oct. 2nd at the center for Performing Arts at the University of Buffalo! I will be meeting with Joanne next week some time to go over advertising & promoting strategies..

I am having a "postering party" and have quite a few gals signed up already to promote the event, we will be meeting at my home and picking up posters and hanging supplies, and then will all carpool to various areas of the city & burbs to plaster the walls and windows! we will then meet back at my house for a hafla! please come join us!

Eveyone who attened the Sonia workshop in Sedona, AZ last weekend absolutely loved it. Many participants have since commented to me about what a wealth of information they gained by taking the workshop. Sonias teaching style is clear and thourough. Defining Beauty, Facing Aging

A comment was made on a previous thread that I feel deserves a discussion of its own. It read:
"It is sad to see how much importance the society put on beauty and how many women themselves police other women on that subject!
Beauty is really an issue for most women performers. This is the main reason why some very talented girls when their beauty will fade will be asked to step out of stage."

I have been pondering these haunting words all weekend long!

I mostly agree. However, I also feel that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." The definition of beauty has varied considerably over time and location. I could talk forever on this subject (ie scarification in Africa, goiters, constricted feet in China) but one recent example that comes to mind is the actress Judi Dench (not a dancer but she is older and still beautiful). She is considered one hot and talented lady and was even appointed a royal in England, "Dame Dench." For example: in a minor role as an overweight, aging monarch with bad teeth (Queen Elizabeth) in the movie, "Shakespeare in Love," she stole the show! I just love her.

In the realm of dance, it seems that near-universally, commercial performances are reserved for the young and trim. I can think of few exceptions, such as the legendary Martha Graham. Yet, she was also subject to criticism and cynicism for dancing past her prime and wearing tons of makeup in attempt to cover her aging features. Mikhail Baryshnikov also danced for a long time but then he began to put on weight. He successfully branched out into directing and acting.

I've been guilty myself of looking at the walls when an unattractive performer is onstage. But to me "unattractive" also includes lack of talent. I realize to others, my husband namely comes right to mind, prefer "eye candy," period. But even that can go too far and become vulgar -- look at the Janet Jackson/ Justin Timberlake stunt or Jessica Simpson's music video to "These Boots are Made for Walkin'." In many parts of the world, the US, and ironically the Middle East where bellydancing originated, bellydance is considered in the spectrum of "vulgar." I find some of Shakira's move too risque, like the wickedly rapid chest circle -- looks like a boob circle. I don't care for Jillina posing in nothing but a flesh colored body stocking in Habibi Magazine or wearing that bondage costume with the bra that's more nude-cutouts than it is red material. It's nothing against her personally, but it makes it difficult to give bellydancing a good name.

It's going to be hard when I get older and can't hide wrinkles or sags or worse, move like I once did or would like to. It will hurt if I'm asked to step off stage or see the audience looking away. I would be untruthful if I said I could predict when this time will come or I will know to bow out gracefully. I've overheard comments of criticism / cynicism regarding a couple of instructors/ performers in my area who are getting grey hair and putting on weight. I wonder, do they realize this is going on? Or do they know all too well, but still feel they are still making a contribution? I know now that it's going to happen to me too and it's inevitable. While performing in public seems out, it does seem acceptable to continue to mentor and teach. Serena Wilson and Jamilla Salimpour come to mind as admirable examples.

Hi there,
I attended Sonia and Issam's workshop yesterday in Dublin, Ireland. Coming from an ATS/fusion perspective, it was a revelation. Such a light approach to the mysteries of shimmy and rhythm! Sonia is a lovely teacher, patient and modest about her amazing talent. Her rapport with Issam was great. She made everything seem effortless and achievable. Sonia also was attentive to different styles of dance and was flexible about people's preferences for hand positions etc. all the time emphasising the grace inherent in the dance which she exemplifies so well. her star's never shown brighter

I saw Sonia and the BDSS last week in Seattle. I loved Sonia's performances and her star has never shown brighter. I met her after the show and gave her a small, soft, stuffed Chihuahua toy (thank you for the hint, Sharon!) and a homemade invitation to join tribe. She was very sweet and flattered that she has a tribe of fans! Sonia said she is not on the internet very much and when she is, she typically checks her email then signs off. Access can be difficult on the road, too. But she has my direct email and I offered to relay anything she might want to share. I hope she writes....

Sonia's style is fantastic. Smooth, graceful, mysterious, and just all around lovely!
We were very happy to have her here in Columbus with us to teach a workshop! I admire her dancing immensely and was really looking forward to hanging out with her and hearing her speak and seeing how she approaches teaching the dance. Sonia is very radiant in her dance and as a person as well. She is a very sweet and gentle soul - beautiful inside and out. Her workshop was fantastic. Having Issam there was great. He is a fantastic drummer and having a live musician playing for a seminar was very cool.

Hi there everyone!! I am hosting Sonya and Isaam via the BDSS on April 1st in Tucson, AZ and I am wondering if anyone has done thier drum solo workshop. They will be teaching 2 workshops here. One is just a drum workshop with Isaam and the other is 'The Art of the Drum Solo' with both Sonya and Isaam. What I am specifically wondering about is whether drummers can come to their joint workshop as well. I have asked the lady that I am booking with and she hasn't gotten back to me. I have a group of drummers that are taking Isaam's drum workshop, but they want to attend both workshops.

She grabs it, pulls it out of her hair and tosses it off to the side of the stage . . . like it was part of the choreography!

As you know, Miles Copeland had an Embedded Reporter contest last month. I won the contest and am going on tour with the Bellydance Superstars for One Week! That week begins on 11 February (this Saturday).

Since the idea for the Embedded Reporter seemed to come from Tribe, I'm asking for your input: What do you want to know about the Superstars? Curious about the touring life? The practice time? Who plays practical jokes? MILES? How long do they have to learn that choreography, anyway? How does Sonia look so gorgeous whilst working so hard and practically living on a bus?

After some pestering, I got a response and am happy to share it here:

Dear Milena,

Sonia’s ethnic background is Mexican-American. She does speak Spanish. It’s quite interesting that when people from the Middle East see our show, many times when they come up to me, they insist some of our dancers must be of Arab descent. Inevitably, they mention Sonia. I had one lady that was so insistent that Sonia was Egyptian (she kept saying “no American can dance like that”) and DEFINITELY she was not American. I finally told her Sonia’s parents are from Mexico. She said, “Ah that explains it.” Sonia was born in Long Beach, which the last time I looked, is DEFINITELY part of the USA. These incidents got me to thinking. Perhaps there IS something to the theory that ancient Egyptians came to Mexico and had something to do with the pyramids there. Maybe Sonia is related to these ancient Egyptians, so yes, her ancestry IS Egyptian. I have started an investigation to discover if there is anything to this theory. My friends in the Egyptian Muhabaret and my archeologist mother will come in handy. I will let you know if we discover the TRUE ancestry of Sonia.

Meanwhile, some other interesting facts. Sonia has done every single show with the Bellydance Superstars except when one troupe performed at the Cairo Carnivale and the other was performing on the same night in Barcelona where Sonia was. Given we’ve performed to over 1 million people- plus her years of experience before joining the Superstars performing bellydance in Europe, Dubai, and Japan- means Sonia could say she has danced bellydance in front of more people than ANY bellydancer in history.

In the Bellydance Superstars show, she is in more pieces than any other dancer. Aside from being a great dancer, she is a fast learner, which is much appreciated by Jillina who hates to spend undue time going over and over the choreography until a dancer “gets it.”

Sonia also has taken advantage of the great Issam Houshan, so she pestered him to teach her to drum. Now she drums in the show on top of her dancing. Upon learning that she plays the flute, I bought her a Nye (Egyptian flute) when we were in Egypt. Maybe she’ll play the Nye in the show next year.

Sonia has now built up a lot of experience teaching workshops. While in Monaco, she teaches twice a week at the prestigious Thermes du Monte Carlo (the most up market health club in all of Europe), plus is giving private lessons. In LA, she also teaches at Equinox, and has done workshops all over the world during our tours. Meanwhile, at all our other workshops by Jillina, Rachel, Amar, Bozenka, or whomever, you’ll find Sonia in the class. We always encourage our dancers to take each other’s classes- and they do. You can never stop learning and the art of teaching also can always be improved. We also took Sonia to Egypt for an intensive immersion into Egyptian style with Raqia Hassan, Dianna, Hallah, and even Dina.

We just finished filming a new bellydance instructional in Monaco featuring 4 parts and 4 dancers: Sonia, Amar, Bozenka, and Saida (from Argentina). All 4 are "Latins"- Amar and Bozenka being Cuban-Americans. Sonia teaches the upper body, arm, and hand movements. The DVD will be out early next year, titled Introduction to Bellydance.

She is also a great judge of talent, so I find myself relying on her opinion because I know she doesn’t allow ego or prejudice to color her judgments. It’s sometimes uncanny, but in auditions, she and I will 9 times out of 10, pick the same dancers.

It's been my opinion since first seeing BDSS last year that Sonia is one of the most graceful, effortless dancers I've seen. I had the good fortune to take a workshop with her & was impressed not only with her technique & style but her warmth & character-- what a sweet lady! I wish she received more recognition. She's lovely.

Sonia's nationality/parentage

Someone that I encouraged to see BDSS in London was - not surprisingly - extremely impressed by Sonia's performance, and asked me what nationality she is. I could only say that I know she was born in the USA - but from her appearance, you could easily imagine that one or both of her parents are from somewhere else. Does anyone know?
