Bras

I have been talking to some people and they seem to think that if I were to vend at different workshops etc, with just bras and a few other pieces, that dancers would buy bras singly, without a matching belt .

I am considering this. The thing being is that I make my bras completely from scratch. The style that has caught their eye, is one with large silver metal rings that are on the sides that allow for adjustibility. There would be a variety of bras, colors, some more decorated than others, but is this something that would be appealing?

That's what Im wondering. Opinions please! Thanks

Heat Activated Materials

Hello from Thermoman- I just found your tribe and curious if folks here are familar with these unique heat activated materials. Not a lot of info out there, but you can do the google search thing.

WONDERFLEX is a thermoplastic available in 43"x55" sheets, that when heated/formed (hot air gun, microwave, hot water etc.), activates its own built in adhesive. Often referred to as the “Celastic” replacement and great for costumes, props, mask making, puppets etc.

FOSSHAPE is sold by the 45" wide yard and is used for millinery and costuming or for any super lightweight crafted prop needs. This is a white felt like product, that when exposed to varying degrees of heat (fabric steamer or steam iron) and pressure, becomes rigid or stiff. You can modify surface textures and densities.

Both products can take numerous artisan coatings for producing lightweight and durable structures. These are “limited only by your imagination” type products and great for making those "one of a kind", most any things.

Sorry to be self serving here, but I came out of the development and manufacturing side of these materials and just want people to be aware. Let me know if you have questions.
Regards,
Thermoman

Hello,

I am working on some Aztec-style masks and am in need of parrot and parakeet feathers. I've seen some sales on eBay that are a bit pricey and wondered if anyone knows a bird owner who'd be willing to donate feathers. I'll cover shipping.

thanks

Exotic Goddessess wanted!

All you open minded women that live in the Vancouver/Lower mainland will have an awesome time at this short but sweet event! I will be having a short fashion show with some of my fabulous costumes, and I will also have some items for sale as well!

Halloween and holidays are fast approaching and you might find that liitle something that you couldn't anywhere else. ; )

Here is a little blurb to explain more about the evnet from the event coordinator:

Hello everyone,

The Fourth Annual Exotic Goddess Night Sexpo for Women fast approaches – Thursday, October 18 from 6 to 10 pm. I wanted to give you all an update so you can pass it on to your friends. Let’s make this a packed event!

We will have free hair and makeup makeovers – so come undone if you want to be pampered!

The theme is fashion – so wear your sexiest outfit ever. You know that little lingerie thing that you can never wear out? Well this is the night to show it off!

Our sex toy booth will be hosted by Ninepartsdesire.com and they are donating a top-of-the-line, g-spot stimulating, clit-massaging, pleasure-inducing vibrator to the silent auction! Some of the other auction items include hand-painted martini glasses from GlamaRama, pole dance lessons from Tantra Fitness, and a custom corset made by Susan Davis – a vocal and compassionate local sex worker.

Ever tried airbrush tanning? Well a local exotic dancer who offers FLAWLESS airbrush tanning – dancers love her work – is donating some gift certificates for door prizes.

There will be pole dance lessons on a strip club stage, lap dance lessons in real VIP booths that are curtained off, airbrush tattoos, and a part of the History of Sex Work installation created by several Vancouver sex workers over the past three years.

For entertainment, we have a fashion show by Fantasy Dancewear displaying some of her spectacular work, an exotic dance show down to bra and panties by Ryann Rain (our lap dance instructor), a pole dance demonstration by one of the best pole dancers in the world – Tammy Morris of Tantra Fitness, and a blow job lesson with props – all performed on the stage of the club.

This year’s event is being held at the Penthouse Nightclub. The Penthouse has historically been a safe place for both exotic dancers and sex workers to earn a living. In 1975, police began to push sex workers out of the clubs and onto the streets and by 1976 owners of the Penthouse were on trial for “keeping a common bawdy house.” But now we’re bringing the sex workers back to the club for a common and worthy cause – to raise funds for programs and services that will directly benefit the women who were most impacted by police raids on the club in 1976 – survival sex workers.

The event costs $30 at the door and includes one drink and a gift bag with sexy surprises inside.

Come out and show your support! It’s going to be a blast! It may be the first time the Penthouse has ever been full of women rather than men. At 10 pm the doors will open to the general public and the exotic entertainment will begin. Guests are welcome to stay and enjoy the shows – they’ll meet some of the dancers at the event anyway!

Hope you can come! ;)

Trina Ricketts

Event Coordinator

Trina.ricketts@shaw.ca

PS. We still need more items for the silent auction and for door prizes. If your target audience is women and you want to promote your business at our event, please contact me for more information.

See you there!!

There seems to be an interest in having a costume workshop. I think it would be only for individual pieces....for now. : )
I haven't really got any details sorted out. I'm just kind of throwing the idea out there to see what kind of feedback I get...so...bring it on...lol

Alright, now that I know about your tribe, I'm making good use of it. I'm working on halloween costumes for Hubby, Baby and Meeself. Do you know where I can get the base for muskateer hats (two adults and one toddler size)? I want to dress them meeself with plumes, etc, but I need a base. And, yes, I'm looking for 'thrifty'....

Last year, Baby wore a lamb costume and I wore Little Bo Peep. I have photos of that somewhere.... I'll see if I can find them to post for a hoot.

Fabric question... Figuring ease? x-post

Hey, I know the standard wearing ease for most garments is 2 - 4 inches. In other words, your measurement + 2 inches means that the clothes will be comfortable for street wear. And that when dealing with things like Swimwear the ease is - 2-4 inches.

I'm drafting my own patterns again, and I've only been guessing up to this point when making clothes out of stretchy fabric. Anyone have anyt ideas on how to figure out what the negative ease should be when dealing with various stretch fbrics? RTW patterns have that line on the back that you hold your fabric up to to check if the amount of stretch in the fabric matches the amount of stretch required for the garment.

Any ideas would be greatly appriciated. I'm tired of having pants turn out either too big or too small because the fabric has a diferent amount of stretch.

Hugs and shimmies!

Confidance dance studio had a student recital, and from what I saw, it was awesome!!! A little bit of everything from ballroom to bellydance and a wicked closing number that was very sexy! I love that kind of 'scissor leg' move while on the chairs! Cool!

Thank you Francesca for letting me vend at your show!! It wasquite succesful! I'm a little frightened by the amount of business cards I handed out too...lol...I might be in trouble! In a good way though. : )

Today is an extremely sad day for me. : (

MY aunt that I love very much, who was more like my sister than my aunt passed away at 3:45 this morning from her short battle with cancer.

She was only diagnosed in February. Luckily I was able to see her last weekend and give her hugs, not knowing it would be the last time I ever did. Yep, I'm a little sad today. : (

What do you think of these? I copied them from another forum that I frequent...Thanks Adrianna!!

the older i get the more i realize that no matter what you do, you can't win.

it's ok to act like a stripper and dress like a hooker... as long as you aren't one.

it's ok to be pretty, as long as you're not too pretty. heaven forbid you OFFEND the frumpy office boss who thinks you'll sleep your way into favoritism, or the woman wearing front-butt mom jeans who will automatically assume you're a slut.

it's ok to work your way to the top, but not until those at the top are good and ready to relinquish that title to you. until then, everyone on the way up is more than willing to remind you that you were once and will always be considered... a peon.

it's ok to love your body as it is. as long as you're 20 pounds overweight. no more, no less.

it's ok to join the gym to excersize. as long as you already look slim and muscular, otherwise everyone stares at the flabby fatty.

it's ok for men to be sluts. as long as they don't impregnate anyone.

it's ok for women to have casual sex. as long as by the time you're married you've slept with no more than 10 men, and no less than 3. and of course don't get pregnant before the wedding.

it's ok to be smart. as long as you dumb down everything you say and use slang. otherwise you're just a nerd.

it's ok to be good at what you do. as long as you're not the best. then everyone thinks you're a showoff.

it's ok to speak your mind. as long as you say what everyone else wants you to say.

it's ok to have an opinion. as long as it's the same one everyone else has.

... the rules of life as i've learned them. LOL.

Stay tuned for pictures of the new spring line!! Vanilla creme split lace pants will look absolutely SCRUMPTIOUS layered over the trumpet pants, or any other flared pants.

I also have mocha chocolate brown lace split pants. Both will have a matching HUG!! to go with them!

What is a hug you ask?!! A hug is a wonderful confection that wraps you in sweet vanilla, chocolatey goodness. A hoody on a shrug.....a HUG!! : )

Pants or skirts?

I was thinking that the new fad is pants, so I was going to make lots of different colors or flared pants. After going to the Nefertara show, and seeing the BDSS, I am thinking that skirts are still a very big part of the main costuming style. Is this true? Or am I imagining things?

I have a number of Harem pants that will be available for the bazaar though. I figured that those are popular no matter what. I still am having trouble deciding styles of skirts to have available.

What is the concensus of preference of skirt?

Does this make sense, I am kind of sick...lol.

costuming controversy

I've been noticing on different tribes about 'knock-offs'. I haven't posted my opinions on other tribes, but I can here without offending the tribe moderator....me...lol.

So, I have to admit, I get inspired by other people, as I'm sure in the past there have been others 'inspired' by me. Obviosly not in the belly dance realm, because this is a new adventure in costuming for me, and I'm hoping it will be a great ride!

I think I have a lot of new and fresh ideas when it comes to costuming. I have worked with a lot of fabrics that are definitely not belly dance types...normally.....hehe...but maybe will be when I'm done with ya! : )

Anyway, I was looking at another tribe and noticed that someone posted about how her design differed from the original.

Someone accused me of 'knocking off 'her design recently( not in the belly dance realm) and I was shocked. She said she was going to sue me as well. I looked on the web to find more 'knock-offs' of this design...lots. She hasn't got the corner on it, nor did she invent it. She was inspired by something herself and created something slightly different, which is what i did. Someone brought me the idea, and we stood there for over an hour to creat it. Pinning this creation to her, then I re -created that.

I was also 'inspired' by the melodia pants. They are a pair of flares with a split in the side. That is the only similiarity. I created a pair of what I called 'trumpet pants, and then recently noticed that someone else is doing the same thing. So who is first? well, I think even though I made mine a few months ago, no one has seen them....so because people have seen hers....hers will be the "original"

It's a weird line to walk, this whole design thing. I haven't really had to encounter this world of 'knock-offs' before, because everything I have been creating for the last 10 years has been one of a kind. It's hard for me to wrap my mind around "mass production". I have so many ideas and designs swirling around in my head that I can't decide which ones to do!!

I will be featuring some Pvc (goth style) pieces at the bazaar this year in the spring, and also some more traditional designs as well.

How about some opinions on this whole mess? : ) I hope this post makes some sense. : )

I was in the fabric store today, trying to decide the best way to spend my money, because there are soooooo many absolutely GORGEOUS fabric choices! So, ok....what colors do you like to wear in a costume?
I notice that tribal is becoming a huge force to be reckoned with, and I'm wondering is it limited to black...a bit of white and a bit of red? I have in mind a tribal costume look but in neon colors....anyone interested?hehe : )

I just got home from purchasing a wonderful new set of pants that are the most comfortable things I have yet put on! I don't want to take them off! Good thing I have to teach today as it gives me an actual "reason" for wearing them! I believe they are going to be my new favourites! And this top!!! WOW. Sexy and hot shear black with red roses! So glad I got it. Yep... my new favourite outfit for class! I might be so busy admiring it in the mirror that I forget what I am doing! LOL.

And now... if I can find a way to buy one of your cloaks! Those are seriously to die for. :-)

I would love it if I could get some opinions of the bra that I posted in the pictures on here. Is this something that you would consider buying if available? I haven;t added the straps yet, but I am wondering mostly ...is it too unfinished? (imagine straps though...lol) as far as decoration? Or is it enough with the brocade and sequins. I am planning on having some of these types of sets available for purchase at the bazaar if there is enough positive responses. : )

Thank you for your cooperation. (hehe...I've always wanted to say that)

I was wondering if I could get first impressions on this name for my business. 'Haute candy' I like candy just because it's something shiny and special that you don't have all the time, much like fancy costumes.

I ask first impressions, I wasn't going to add the add explanation, mostly because if you were to see it somewhere the explantaion wouldn't be there...lol

I have decided....that I can't decide...lol

Besides trumpet pants....What kinds of things should I concentrate on for the bazaar? I have sooo many ideas rattling around in my brain, that I can't decide what and how many things to make!
I have a brand new design for a veil. I also have an idea for leg decorations. I almost don't want to post pictures of them though. Is that bad? With the whole design knock-off controversy...I just want to be the first one that has them!

Costume addiction - 12 steps

I came across this on another tribe and wanted to include it here....I love it! It's so me, and so many others!

1. We admitted we were powerless over our addiction - that our fabric and trims had become unmanageable
2. Came to believe that a clearance sale greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity
3. Made a decision to turn our fabric and our fringe over to the care of the Goddess as we understood she knows this curse
4. Made a searching and tearless moral inventory of our shelves and closets
5. Admitted to the Goddess, to ourselves and to other dancers the exact style of our costumes
6. Were entirely ready to have the Goddess remove all these costuming materials if we did not get them made up soon
7. Humbly asked the Goddess to remove our short cuttings and scraps
8. Made a list of all costumes we had not started and became willing to make plans to start them all
9. Made amendments to the plans when possible, except when to do so would require us to throw out “too good to pass up” bargains
10. Continued to take inventory and when we had too much on the go promptly admitted it
11. Sought through dance meditation to improve our abdominal isolations as we needed to get better to justify new navel jewelry and so we had the skill to carry it off
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other addicts, and to practice these principles in all our dance costuming

Crossposted: Need Costume Help BAD

Um...help. I think.....Thank you SO much to anyone willing to take the time to read this.

Can someone help me understand specifically what the difference between cabaret style, egyptian style, and other is? Our student troupe has been made aware of an audition for a local restaurant, and it's Lebanese. (This is with the blessing of my instructor/troupe leader, I've been dancing for over a year. She also told us to NOT go tribal for this venue.)

I'm trying to figure out what the difference between the styles is. I really don't quite understand them. There's so many overlapping elements. I have trouble with distinctions. For example, I see politics as a spectrum of greys instead of blacks and whites. Same with bellydance styles, except that it's not just between black and white, but also silver and gold, and the rainbow of color options too. (Ok. That was supposed to be a joke.)

I've also been on a limited budget, so I'm a little short on cohesive outfits. I haven't been able to afford any "cabaret" bra and belts yet, and I haven't had the time or wherewithall to bead any myself. (I'm working up to it.)

Is this something that could be worked into a cabaret outfit: img.photobucket.com/albums/v...lyTop.jpg
(I have some sheer copper fabric I could do a circle skirt with, with black harem pants beneath for modesty)

What about this skirt:
img.photobucket.com/albums/v...Skirt.jpg
What do I pair with it? I don't have time to bead a bra, but I could probably cover one with some red shiny fabric.

Are there ANY pieces here I could reclaim?
img.photobucket.com/albums/v...00729.jpg

What about this:
i115.photobucket.com/albums/...ly11.jpg
Too gypsy?

I don't even begin to know what this is classified as. Ren faire.
i115.photobucket.com/albums/...Moon.jpg
But I have the sense that coin bras are distinctly tribal style?

I wish I had some cohesive outfits, but in the mean time, I'm trying to work with what I have and not embarrass myself or my instructor.

Not completely unrelated, because it still involves costumes, just not belly dance ones. : )

I have been involved in getting a community theatre play up and running for the past little while. I belong to a local group called the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society, and we are doing a play called Steel Magnolias. It opens tomorrow, in Pitt Meadows. This will be, I think my 4th or 5th play with this group and this is the first time I haven't really made anything. A few alterations here and there, but mostly shopping...for 'the eighties'

Wow, was it hard! I had to try and remember what kind of stuff I was wearing then, ooops I mean what people were wearing then.... : )

I think I did ok for the most part. there are some bits that aren't really the eighties, but I don't think anyone will really notice.
I must admit, I love the theatre, I think I would love it more if I actually got paid for all the time I put in. *sigh*

We are going to be doing "Bard in the Park" again in the summer next year. I'm already looking forward to that one! I am ALL about the costumes.

Wish me luck tomorrow! The play only runs 2 weekends, this one and next weekend.

At the end of October (20-22) there is a womens trade show in Abbotsford. I have purchased a booth there. I am SO nervous!! Scared that I will waste my money...scared that no one will like my stuff......scared that no one will buy my stuff. My active wear is coming along nicely. I have been painting and dying things like crazy!

Does anyone have any experience with trade shows?
What I would really like to know...how often do you buy things at a trade show? Does it make you more likely to buy if you know they aren't in a store and may not find them again?

I will have lots of cards and stuff, but one never knows......

On Women Who Look Like Women

WTF is up with men?

I say that as a man, and not in any kind of fatuous solidarity with women that some men try to adopt because they think it makes them more sensitive and attractive when in actuality it makes them seem wimpy and dishonest?

No, I say this out of a simple preference that I've always had but that has been out of favor for some time. Namely, I tend to be attracted to women who actually look like women.

Now there was a time when most feminists would rake me over the coals for saying something like that. What is a woman supposed to look like? How can you apply one standard when women, like men, come in so many different shapes and packages? What about honoring people for being just people, whatever they may look like on the outside?

To which I say, okay, fine. But I want to say two things in my defense:

1. I'm talking here about my own preferences, one thing that tends to attract me, or get my interest and attention (nothing suggestive meant here) almost immediately. It is not necessarily the only thing that I notice, or even in the final analysis the most important thing about someone even physically. But it's there and it's real.

2. While I agree that it's unfair to impose a standard on everyone, the real reason that I'm writing this is in strong opposition to another standard that has already been imposed, and that's become deeply rooted in the minds of women as well as men.

So back to my point, and to be more precise:

WTF is up with men who are attracted to women who are built like boys?

I mean,. is this some kind of neo-Greek revival of hidden homoerotic impulses which have remained unacknowledged in the context of this seriously homophobic culture of Dubya the Idiot? Because right now, this is the attitude you're likely to find among many Republican-minded macho assholes. They prefer women with twiggy bodies, straight and skinny, like boys, to women who are more rounded, curved, fully developed, like women.

Possibly this is part of the twisted obsession with youth, even childhood, ignorance, and simplicity, which has also been a tool of Republican thinking over the last twenty years or so. And it goes along well with a culture in which commitment has become unthinkable, which wants to be eternally open to possibility, which doesn't want to ever grow up--because growing up means adopting those ugly things like responsibility (to someone other than yourself), work, and of course acknowledgement of mortality.

And yes, I am well aware of the irony of my writing this when my avatar is of the boy who stands sentinel in Kensington Gardens. Perhaps I'll get back to that later, but let's see where this is going.

Let me say, for the record, that I like girls with hips. Real hips, curves, and actual asses. I was having breakfast with my friend Patrick at Fido's today, and there were a couple of girls standing in line near our booth with their backs to us. And I asked Patrick which girl had the better figure, just his immediate response. And God bless him, he picked the girl with the hips, even though I could see the other girl was more slender, more obviously his type.

That sense of a curved body, something implicitly feminine, and powerful in that femininity, can be traced back as least as far as the Paleolithic. Those so-called Venus figurines that have been found throughout the Old Stone Age sites in Europe. It can be found in Greek statues, in Renaissance paintings, in the work of artists from Reubens to Rembrandt. It can be found in certain fashion eras of our country--the 1940s, for instance, which in my opinion is probably the sexiest period as far as women's fashions are concerned, or the late 60s and early 70s, when low-rise jeans first made their appearance. The whole point of low rise jeans, by the way, is to show off the curve of the hips.

Possibly there's some kind of genetic factor at work here. At some level, deeply unconscious, guys respond to the curve and not to the figure of the stick, not to the harshness of angles, stereometric and sharp.

So where does this obsession with the stick figure come from, so contrary to the leanings of history and biology?

Simple answer? Fucking graphic novels.

You think I'm kidding? I'd say look at the comic industry and its progress over the last century or so. With guys, it has emphasized the stereometric figure--think of Superman, the man of steel. And there is a correspondence (I don't have the time or the inclination to flesh it out here) between the growth of that angular aesthetic, and the rise of fascism, the contempt for femininity, softness, curvature, the emphasis of a totalizing vision over multiplicity, conformity over individuality, assimilation of multi-dimensionality.

Remember Star Trek: The Next Generation? The Klingons were no longer the threat--it was the Borg. "You will be assimilated." Only to make them seem more of a threat, they had to walk around like some parody of the Frankenstein monster. And why? Because take a look at those goddamn Star Fleet uniforms. And compare those to the costumes that were worn by apparently everyone else in the fucking universe. They already had been assimilated. Gimme a fucking break.

We have had the stick figure pushed on us at every level of this culture--from the vantage point of health, fashion, psychology. You might even call it a hegemonic tool. It's not my purpose here to ferret out the reasons for its use, or to lay out a theory. I'm not writing a critical article. I'm just blogging my ass on a lazy Sunday. But that doesn't mean I don't have my suspicions.

I believe that the stick figure is misogynistic, and that it not only emerges from a hatred of women, but from a deeply anti-democratic and even totalitarian mindset, anti-free speech, homophobic, and anti-sex. The man of steel, you remember, is impenetrable. Homosexuality is obviously a threat. But so is sex in general. And now that we have the stick figure of the woman as the man of steel's Ubermate, as it were, we have a female aesthetic which renders itself equally impenetrable.

Why isolate people from each other in this way? Who has anything to gain by it? Take a look at how money is made. Isolation and unfulfilment are the latest strategies of late 20th century corporate capitalism. It's all about who makes the money, Mouseketeers. And the more isolated we are, the more we put barriers between ourselves and others while secretly or even unknowingly yearning for those connections which we constantly and consistently abjure and abhor, the more ready we are to buy the latest kind of substitute for sex, intimacy, connection, the comfort of curves.

Space is curved, you know. Subatomic matter moves in a curved orbit. At the very nature of being is the curve. Genetic material is organized around the double helix.

I have a friend who is becoming a closer friend. I'm not going to share her name here. Recently, she confessed to me that she had been feeling phyisically inadequate by someone (a guy) close to her who preferred the bodies of boy-like girls. And she'd actually begun to question herself.

What I will say is that hearing something like that shocks me and angers me. Because this friend of mine is frankly one of the most beautiful women I know--and for the record, her curves are just about perfect.

That anyone like my friend should be made to feel inadequate about how she looks is the most appalling thing I have heard from a culture that hates and despises women so much that it feels like it needs to make them into images of boys. And I just wanted to say, to her, to every girl I know who is built like a woman, who has been subjected to images of how women supposedly should look to which she can never conform (and here again, how appropriate that it should be in comics, where you're not encumbered by what people actually look like), who has been made to feel like her hips are too big, who has struggled to find fashionable clothes that fit her in the right way, to all of the women I know--I for one find you beautiful, as you are. I notice.

That's all.

I just spent about an hour trying to clean up the forum on my website. Arghhh....I just get to the point where I don't want to deal with it, but I have no choice because it gets so much that I think it will deter people from actually going there.

I would love it if people went there and posted in my little corner of the world!
Hopefully this link will work.

I recently (like yesterday) hennaed my hair, I have to admit that I am less then pleased with the results. :( I feel like that comedian CarrotTop! I did it twice in total, thinking it would be darker the second day.
All I can say is, I might be making a trip to the hair salon soon. I will post before and after pics in my photos.
