Dancing while pregnant

My friend and dancing partner is currently pregnant. She is worried about dancing while she is pregnant and what the reaction would be to a pregnant belly while performing. She is almost 3 months now and we had planned to try to get a GS in the next year (before she new she was pregnant), but if it could be harmful or too difficult for her we can wait until after the baby is born to finish our certification. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Dancing while pregnant has been a very positive thing for me. I am almost 39, and have had an extremely easy pregnancy - fatigue has been my main problem. I've been so blessed that I have been able to dance this whole time - I performed this past weekend and I am 35 weeks pregnant. About a month ago, I stopped performing fast pieces (mainly because my stamina isn't what it normally is) - this weekend I only danced the slow part of a song. The audience's reaction is amazing!!! I've gotten so much positive feedback.

Just listen to your body and sit down and rest alot!! In class, I will take sit-down breaks quite frequently. And drink LOTS of water. I am staying away from deep laybacks, floorwork and levels (balance is definitely an issue the further you get along).

But, by all means, keep dancing!!!

I think it depends on the pregnancy, really. I had to stop around 4 months because my balance was completely gone (I could fall over walking quite easily, it was sad LOL) and then I developed preeclampsia and delivered my twins prematurely. Anyway, I think barring complications, as long as her OB approves of the activity and she doesn't overdo, she should be fine. For the GS, maybe she can do what she can and sit out and take notes on things when she doesn't feel up for it. I haven't taken one yet (hoping to in 08!), so...

As a student midwife, I got very excited in a lecture recently as my tutor included bellydance. She was telling her class the benefits of hip circles, I had a long chat with her after class, as at that point she didnt kow of my involvment in the bd scence and had in fact never met a bellydancer before. As you can image I was quite excited to discuss this further (opening a hornetsnest, springs to mind)but time was limited. Needless to say when I see posts like yours I watch with interest, one of my goals when I qualify is to start antenatal bellydance classes.
Anyway, in responce to your question, it really does depend on a host of factors, one thing for sure though was my tutor was in agreement with hipdrop type of mves (avoid them), as it can bouce baby out of pelvis and therefor should be avoided. if in doubt get checked out and ask your midwife, as she knows your past ob history.
Old pregnancy rumors such as not lifting your arms above head height are nowadays considered rubbish, so arm work should be safe.
but avoid lay backs and turkish drops.
when in labour-hip circles are fantastic, but if you learn to listen to your body you will naturarly do them anyway.
      Good luck

spoke to another midwife at work last night and she also recommended not starting something new like bd, but if you have been doing it before you got pregnant then your body is used to it and you will proberly be in touch with what feels good, so go ahead and enjoy the attention.

Thanks for all of the great feed back! I know that this will put a lot of her fears to rest and hopefully make her feel better about performing while pregnant.

      Hi Robyn,

Performing depends on the audience and how comfortable she feels in her skin. If it's general public, they may or may not respond postively to seeing a large uncovered pregnant belly. Just depends on who they are. I covered when I performed at 8 months with my first. I have a friend who performed with bare bally at an international festival. She's very petite and looked wonderful. I'm pregnant with my second and when I'm bigger I won't perform uncovered because I'm a larger lady and will look like I have a galapagos turtle sized belly.

As for the GS. It *is* an intensive course. If she's in good shape and has been dancing through her pregancy I imagine it would be fine. I don't know if you can sit on the sidelines and still receive a certificate. That would be a Carolena question.

      Happy belly thoughts!!

One of the gals from Devyani was at the Atlanta GS, in her third trimester. She just took breaks when she needed to.

Pregnant bellies dancing rock my world.

I have had many students dance through their entire pregnancies in my class, only leaving class within weeks of giving birth because of fatigue and just plain having to put their energies into nesting for baby's arrival!

Along the same lines, but not specific to ATS for FatChance BellyDance...

I teach a beginner basic bellydance class (not specifically ATS or tribal style), I am not a fitness expert nor am I a licensed fitness instructor. That being said, I am wondering if there are things I can do (training, videos, etc.) to prepare me for potentially teaching pregnant women. Within my first year of teaching, I did not have any pregnant women and at this point I would not feel comforable teaching some who is pregant as I wouldn't want to do anything to jeapordize their situation. Recommendations, suggestions, etc.? Many thanks!

I used Naia's dvd 'Prenatal Bellydance" to start with, she lists the recommendations from the American Society of OBs and GYn for exercise in pregnancy and conditions in pregnancy where bellydance is not recommended.

I am a qualified nurse, fitness instructor and dance teacher. I believe that belly dance has some great benefits during pregnancy and have read lots of anecdotal evidence to support this. I tried very hard, when I first started teaching 5 years ago and since, to find studies, research on this topic. I contacted an obstetrician in the US who mentioned bellydance on a website. She didn't know of any studies, neither does anyone I've contacted.

The advice when I did my fitness instructors course was this...Miscarriages are sadly fairly common during the first 3 months of a pregnancy. Part of the normal grieving process is for women to look for reasons why these things happen, although most times there's no reason, nothing that anyone's done wrong. The problem is (and I have experience of this from working on Gynae wards) that women often blame themselves or others when they have lost a baby. If only hadn't ....! For this reason we were advised not to allow newly pregnant women to join an aerobics class, if they hadn't already been attending.

I would really like to teach pregnant women but I have been very wary in the absence of research. I advise women, who become pregnant while coming to classes, to check with their midwife or doctor and bring a letter to say that it's okay to continue. This has happened about three times now and, to date, no one has come back with a letter. All three mums have waited 'til they've had babies and then returned.

If anyone ever hears of any research or studies being carried out, I would love to hear about it and would glady get involved to assist anyone who's planning a study.

Lindsey I'd love to come and learn from you when you're ready.

In the meantime I think pregnant dancers need to find out as much as they can. Make sure they've got a properly trained teacher and listen to their bodies. To dance teachers I'd recommend extreme caution, especially if you have no training. You don't know how little you know 'til you start to find out...if that makes sense. Im agine how you would feel if a woman miscarried oir injured herself. Could you be 100% sure it wasn't down to the dancing?

I have leant this DVD to two of my students to use. They found it most helpful.

Belly Dance Prenatal Fitness with Naia. Naia developed the DVD witha nurse practioner and midwife. It's easily available from Amazon

I just had to share!! I had my little Ewan on Friday (January 4). I had an easy pregnancy and a very easy delivery. I gave birth 4 hours after my water broke and pushed less than an hour (my first pregnancy and I am 39). The doctor commented many times that my danced was a huge contributing factor to my easy delivery (even to the nurses when I wasn't around). He said he wished all his patients were as strong and in good shape!

Just as long as you take care of yourself and listen to your body (and avoid certain kinds of moves), it can be such a good way to strengthen muscles that will help you in childbirth!! Keep dancing girls!!!!!!!
