Re: General Skills Certification
Sat, May 2, 2009 - 3:40 PMSunia...its amazing! If you love ATS and want to really get an idea of how it all works, studying with Carolena and Megha is an awesome opportunity! The course is well put together and Carolena runs it with lots of enthusiasm. She sticks to her syllabus and you learn so much :) Its also a great opportunity to meet wonderful people, get to know them, and make new friends that you wonder how you lived without :)

Re: General Skills Certification
Sat, May 2, 2009 - 6:02 PMOne of the wisest things I ever decided to do (as far as my dance career) goes. Class is nice and structured, and you will be given the chance to be taught, corrected, and helped along. You'll also be able to ask questions and take notes, that will allow you to go back home, with a wealth of knowledge you weren't able to access up to that point. It will challenge you on many levels, and indirectly (and directly) kick your butt in directions you didn't think it could be kicked in :) -

Re: General Skills Certification
Sat, May 2, 2009 - 11:53 PMDitto what everyone said about doing the GS certification. Do take notes and do little diagrams. I did the GS in 2007 and I refer back to my notes often, especially for teaching. You get the opportunity to drill the moves and get things into your muscle memory. Go for it.
Cheers, Susan -

Re: General Skills Certification
Sun, May 3, 2009 - 1:27 AMWorth much more than it costs!
I use my notes constantly, since we got *so* much more info than you possibly can get from a DVD. Wow!
I am so excited about how amazing ATS done the right way is, I have to start teaching it on Tuesday!
Wheeeeee! -

Re: General Skills Certification
Mon, May 4, 2009 - 7:12 AMThe GS is amazing. There she is, LIVE, in front of your very eyes! Your chance to see how they tweak the moves you've been studying, and to hear the moves described by Carolena, in her own terms with the best analogies!
I agree on the note-taking! I wrote down everything that caught my ear, and when I returned to study my DVD's, they totally "popped" on the screen after having her live instruction! Lots of "Aha" moments!

Re: General Skills Certification
Mon, May 4, 2009 - 6:10 PMI still bring my notebook from the GS to my classes and every so often I'll remember something Carolena or Megha said, and I'll read it to our students. Carolena said so many things that I HAD to write down because they were so awesome! Both Carolena and Megha had so many visuals that they taught us...I can still picture Megha's hand as she went over the floreo and how she described it visually. Its awesome to watch our students jot stuff down in their own notebooks :)

Re: General Skills Certification
Mon, May 4, 2009 - 9:45 AMThis is a super helpful discussion! Sunia, I'm in FL, too, and I imagine you're looking toward the GSI in July sponsored by Lacey? I've been trying to figure out if I want to do it also. Pricing info would really help, too.
A question to add: Any idea of the skill level that's needed for the GSI. I'm a super noob of ATS right now, but I have a few months until the GSI, so then I'll only just be a noob ;-).
Thanks a bunch all! -

Re: General Skills Certification
Mon, May 4, 2009 - 2:26 PMI believe that this kind of training is a valuable resource at any level of ATS dance experience, and I am really looking forward to taking it again to see what else I can take to the next level!
I would still recommend careful study of the FatChanceBellyDance DVDs until then, since it is always easier to follow a discussion when you are familiar with the topic. That way nothing will sound completely foreign to you, and you can just focus on soaking up all of the delicious details!
For example, when Carolena teaches the Egyptian, she teaches it so well that you could definitely do it for the first time that day, and you would be learning it from the SOURCE, so you know the info is good and the arms are correct!
But if you have already drilled the basic foot work for the Egyptian, and you know that the chest stays open to 12:00 to face the audience the whole time, and which arm is opposing which hip, then none of that is a mystery or a surprise, and your mind isn't filled up with all of that while she is talking.
If you already have a basic understanding, then her instruction is more like a check list, so your brain can just take in each point and see how it matches what you know.
Then your notes make a lot of sense and you can focus on the more advanced bits of info like the hip swivel that comes into the move or what it feels like to smile or zill or make sure that your cues are clean and clear while you dance it.
So, yes, do it *and* study hard before then to get even *more* creamy goodness out of the experience! -

Re: General Skills Certification
Mon, May 4, 2009 - 3:04 PMThe GS is a fantastic course to take, and one which I would highly recommend to anyone who is serious about Tribal - regardless of whether they wish to teach or not. From personal experience, I'd say the more knowledge you have of FC moves beforehand the better, as it is a really intensive course with a ton of information to cover. With having a good knowledge base beforehand, you can focus on correcting or fine tuning the moves, instead of trying to grasp how to do them for the first time. Studying the DVDs will really help. If you have the time and money, take the GS as often as you can! I know I would! -
