3/4 shimmy

topic posted Fri, March 7, 2008 - 9:33 AM by  Jennifer
The 3/4 shimmy totally escapes me. I can do it half time, no problem. But double time, forget it.

It doesn't help that one teacher taught that it starts with a bump up and another taught that it starts with a drop down.

Why do I not get this? Is there a trick that I'm missing? Am I not loose enough in my hips? This is really preventing me from moving foward with my dance, and I've been dancing for YEARS.

Help me!

Put your weight on your right foot. Move your right hip UP-DOWN-UP. Switch your weight onto your left foot. move your left hip UP-DOWN-UP. Practice at a slower speed until you feel comfortable with this, then gradually increase the speed. You can also do this while standing on the foot your weight is on- stand on right foot, lift left foot slightly off the floor, move right hip up-down-up, switch to left side and repeat. When you get the hang of that, then you can walk with it. Just takes practice.

      practice, practice, practice.

My friend has a little trouble when speeding it up but we break it down to half time and alternate between full speed and half time.

      Oh yeah and practice.

Took me ages to get mine going but it does come.

Shimmies are hard because they are a delicate balance between release and control. You need to be able to be loose and free to get the shake and reverb, but if you just shake wildly it lacks the polish and muscular control that makes it look really clean.

I usually start my students off by concentrating on the loosening up part. Stepping and letting the hips swing very freely, letting the natural reverb of the female hips work for you. Then we cinch it up over time to gain that greater control.

That's it exactly! How can I be loose and controlled at the same time?! LOL!

if you can get your hands on one of those great weight belts that Delilah from Seattle sells! WOW!!! That'll improve your shimmy in no time! But yeah, lots of practice on updownup for shimmies on the up's and of course downupdown for the down shimmies all over the house......it'll come grasshopper.

Sooz is right. I got my shimmy by practicing in line for coffee, while pushing grocery carts (they make great moving "barre" for practicing releve, too ;), etc.

And don't forget to take time AWAY from the drilling, too. We were just talking about this in another thread. Like saying a word over and over, sometimes it will cease to make sense, and drilling it more can feel counterproductive. But give it a little time off, then come back to it fresh, and you'd be surprised what connections your mind and body made while you were taking a break!

          Shay you are so right.

Frustration causes a mental block and revisiting the thing that you find frustrating and getting even more frustrated causes a block.

I tell my friend to relax too as she tenses up as soon as we start to do it

      Genie-
Everybody is different, we all learn at different rates! Please don't compare yourself to other people in your class! You are learning at the rate that is right for YOU. :-)

What Wendy said. Everyone learns different things at different paces. You're just going at your pace, and there's absolutely nothing embarrassing about that.

There's a little story that Carolena told at GS last year that seems to really help the shimmy "click" for people. Yes, it IS an up-neutral-up step on each side, with the weight transferring to the foot on the second "up". BUT. It's also just a walk with a bounce. It's like - to ridiculously oversimplify her story - you're walking down the street back in the day, and you catch a drummer's eye... and you add a little bounce to your step as they kick up their rhythm: bounce-step, bounce-step, etc. The looseness, not the precision of up-neutral-up, is what gives the full-time shimmy its character.

This story makes such a huge difference to people learning the shimmy that we've started teaching it this way first, and only once they've got a bounce-step going do we point out the mechanics of it.

I found that trying it on a treadmill on slow really helped me to learn the move, but not necessarily walking forward. It makes you move your feet without traveling, and then when it becomes like second nature then you can do it easily and travel with it...I don't know why it worked for me but it did, by accident. I used to really struggle with it too, and I was practicing it while at the gym, and it just hit one day, and I did it over and over on the treadmill and faster, and it is so easy for me now. Good luck!

I am, by far, not an expert. But I have only very recently figured out the beginnings of a 3/4 shimmy for me.

What I was doing wrong: my posture was a wilted disaster.
How I fixed it: I planted my feet, bent my knees, tucked the pelvis slightly to free my backside for the shimmy, and then imagined that I tucked my shoulder blades into my back pockets.

Then I began slowly - and sped up gradually, and found my body was in a better posture to let the shimmy happen. Huzzah!

Now I've got to keep drilling it and attempt the shimmy up on the toes... I still have some issues with that.

    Good luck to you.

Exactly!! going back to the posture not only for this move but ALL the moves! if you feel wobbly in your turns, or off balance on the camel walk, check you posture! good for you for figuring it out!!! happy shimmies!

One more thing to check: your ribcage.:)

Keep it uplifted and engaged, then you'll realize that your lower body is so much looser and relaxed. Imagine it as holding your body's weight with your torso and ribcage, so anything down below is free to dangle and jiggle.

When you are trying to shimmy up on your toes, this will be the key. Anytime you feel bogged down or too heavy to shimmy, check if your ribcage is lifted, torso open, and shoulders engaged. You'll be shimmying like a floating petal in no time.:)

Right! Thanks! Hey, but now, what about that whole "sinking back" into the heels weight-shift thing in ATS posture? I have a harder time with maintaining that when up on my toes, and I think that's when my entire posture starts to slouch forward.

Or perhaps I'm sinking back too much, and I should compromise a little when I'm up on my toes?

It seems like the only way I can manage to maintain proper posture is if I have a scimitar or a basket on my head. For some reason, I don't hunch down or collapse, but I tend to lean forward - I notice I do this when I walk as well. It's getting to the point that when I am practicing moves, I make sure a basket or a scimitar is on my head. You're less likely to lose posture if you have something you need to balance. I'm hoping eventually, I'll just get it into muscle memory and just "pretend" I have something on my head :)

"...I tucked my shoulder blades into my back pockets"

That is BRILLIANT! And what a great image!

      *runs away to try it*
