Are there fixed counts for this move? I've looked at the DVD 150 times to try to figure it out and it seems like there are no fixed counts, that it's a question of the follower following the leader and the leader following the music. There are no counts specified on the DVD, but I wanted to make sure.

Re: Arabic Orbit
Tue, April 3, 2007 - 8:24 AMWe did it in a performance - and I found the timing very difficult, as well. We ended up agreeing on what we'd do after practicing to the music, there was one way that worked with the music, and we went with that. -

Re: Arabic Orbit
Tue, April 3, 2007 - 9:09 AMWe use this move and do not count it as it is different every time depending on how many are in the formation (it is so cool using 4 people with 1/4 or 1/2 turns), we use the arms to cue when and where we will be facing. It works great for changing the way you are facing when you have audience on more than one side. Play with and it will take on all kinds of forms by accident very cool move.

Re: Arabic Orbit
Tue, April 3, 2007 - 10:57 AMI don't think there is a set count, even though sometimes I'd like it to. In class, to avoid the orbits moving too slow, I set a count for the students. 32 cts may seem like a long sequence for improv, but it seems to work well with the music we normally dance to. And this is definitely a specialty thing you wouldn't want to do more than once in an improv set.
4 cts Arabic setup
4 cts for the leader to move back - cuing the orbit, arms out
8 cts to go around one full orbit
4 cts for the arms to go up and flip to the back, arms out again
8 cts for another full orbit
4 cts to arms up, flip to the front
Change movement
Try it out and see if it works.

Fri, April 6, 2007 - 5:25 PMI also recommend going with the music...I am big about phrasing .....otherwise I feel like I am not dancing with the music as a partner..just on top of it....there a difference ey? Good question as we were wondering the same thing too in class this week. -
