Money Shame

Ok, so for some time now I've been reflecting on a phenomenon I've observed for most of my life that I call Prosperity Guilt. I define it as the feelings that many people I've known or observed have when they have an abundance of prosperity and then feel guilty that they have it and others don't. I'm still working on the full write up of this behavior, but for now, have tabled it in favor of a different observation that has come about through my new career as a Financial Advisor.

I have observed in people from all socio-economic levels a certain amount of shame attached to how they view money, how they feel they handle money, and/or some shame in that they don't feel they handle it/understand it well enough as they "should", according to their own perspective.

My money shame led me into learning all I could about it, and how to have it work for me and others. I'm taking an informal poll for those of you willing to help me assess this social phenomenon.

So, if you are inclined, tell me how much shame you do or do not have about your finances. I'm curious to see if there are similar patterns afoot, as I suspect there are.

So, here I am between practice tests for my series 66 license, and I hop onto Wizard Entertainment's website to check out the latest comic industry news, etc.

I see a link to the latest batch of entrants into their yearly Halloween costume contest. And I'm reminded, upon review, of why I've decided not to have Madame Bovary stitch me up a rad Batman costume until my body is a rippling hunk of trim meat.

Superman Returns

Ok, here's the rule: NO SPOILERS. Talk about the film in general terms, but don't give anything away until AFTER the 4th of July. That'll give everyone time to see it.

I thought it was great. I still think Batman Begins was done just a pinch better, SR was solid, nonetheless. Of course, you'll all just blame my bias.

So, Brandon Routh managed to pull off a miracle. There were some scenes where I could swear I was watching Christopher Reeves, both as Clark and Supes. I haven't had the chills that often in a movie since BBs.

Just avoid seeing it in Sparks theatre #8 because they have some blown speakers and it gets quite distracting.

Oh, and just as I will forever refer to Liam Neeson as Ra's al Ghul as his new name, so will I refer to Kevin Spacey forthwith as Lex Luthor. He nailed it.

Greetings one and all. I wish you all a Happy Batmass!

What is Batmass, you say? Well, it goes like this.

Thus Saith Faust: Mythology is mythology. It takes just as much faith to believe in Odin as it does Jesus or Buddha, etc. That being said, I have observed, as have others, that the mythology of this age lies in the pages of comic books.

Superman is our new Zeus, Odin, Jupiter, God the Father; from him springs the Other Gods who represent lesser qualities that we admire/fear. Batman is the bringer of Justice, Wonder Woman of peace through strength, Aquaman is the new Posiedon, well, you get the picture.

In the Beginning was the Faust. And the Faust had to grow up at the age of 6. In clinical terms I was a "parentified" child. You know, the kid who is more 'adult' than his parents? So after that I never got to experience "unresponsibility" again. Unresponsible not meaning irresponsible. Unresponsible means that someone else has the lead on the responsibility of things for the moment; kinda like how parents should be responsible, and children unresponsible, yet aware of responsibility as a principle nonetheless.

Fast forward to 2005. I realized that my own Archetypal spirituality was connected to 3 "personages": Batman, Daredevil, and the Punisher. It occurred to me that this was more religious than not in actual function; so I created my own personal religious holiday - BATMASS.

Last year, on June 15th I was at the midnight showing of Batman Begins. It was a religious experience, goosebumps and all. I went home, caught some zzzzz's and then went to see BB four more times with various friends throughout the day. I even told my boss that I was taking the day off for religious celebration.

So, today is the second anniversary of Batmass. May you brood like the Dark Knight, eat whatever you want, and experience the unresponsibility of a child. I am.

A seemingly innocent housewarming party at the Scotto household... We all gathered to celebrate and consume alcohol and salty snack foods. None of us even suspected the devastation that would be wrought upon that horrible night. The party was visited by....

(A brief aside before I continue: as one of the four Horsemen I can only give my accounts of that evening. I was in NO condition to observe the events of the other three: Josh, Alan, and our illustrious moderator Faust. I will let the other Horsemen and witnesses recount their experiences. And now on to my story...)

Two or three beers, a margarita, and a couple (okay 4 or 5) Dirty Girl Scout Cookies, I've had MUCH more to drink at other parties but this night was different. The party was in full swing - everyone was talking and laughing. Suddenly I was finding myself unable to see straight and the room kept leaning one way or the other. Steadying myself on my sturdier friends didn't seem to be helping. I was a little confused but still having quite a bit of fun. ( I think I was hugging everyone by that point.)

It became obvious that I needed to visit the restroom to relieve some of the pressure in my bladder region as the consumption of beer is usually responsible. Since the room was leaning at approximately a 48.5 degree angle I was finding it very hard to fulfill my urinary duties. So I did the intelligent thing and sat down to accomplish the task. Upon completion however, I found that I could not stand, no matter how hard I tried.

My efforts DID produce another unfortunate effect: the contents of my stomach decided it was time to vacate the premises. YUCK! NO FUN! This should have been the end of my ordeal but oh no... it was just beginning. Every time I tried to stand, I threw up some more. Soon I was doing the obligatory dry-heaving and wondering if my shoes were going to make a trip into the toilet.

Finally, an angel came to check on me (I hope it was my wife). Soon I was up and about and trying to "walk it off". I drank some water, which soon found it's way into the kitchen sink and then onto the front lawn after it was decided that some "fresh air would be a good thing." I vaguely remember being carried around by Pam and Dan. (I think.)

So what more could happen you ask? I'll wrap this up with a drive home, puking twice into a plastic pan of some kind that was put into my lap. Then walking into the house an immediately going to bathroom to vomit some more. Waking up next to the toilet, shivering and miserable, and then climbing into bed. Next morning, sometime around dawn I woke up and had to throw up some more. (I don't know where that came from.) After it was all said and done, I had two black eyes, a strained neck, a sore chest, and a broken a blood vessel in my right eye.

No more getting drunk for me.

Dream Interpretation--new dream

So I am on day 4 of no candy, cookies or snackie sugary things. I feels like 4 weeks. Here's my dream:
My son's birthday is coming up in July. I dreamt last night that I lost track of time and that his birthday was actually tomorrow. I was running around from bakery to bakery trying to find him a birthday cake. For some reason, cakes were in short supply and I was putting in bids at several bakeries for a cake. Kind of like Ebay, I won two bids on cakes but really I only needed one. I went to the first bakery and they brought it out to me to see. It was super chocolatey looking (not really a child's cake) but I was desperate so I was having them box it up. I left it there to be picked up later and went to the next bakery. It too was very chocolately looking. The big difference? Matthew McConaughy was the delivery boy.

Dream Interpretation

Every since I moved into my house last January, I keep having the same reoccuring dream. Since I live out "where Jesus left his sandals" (as my friend puts it), I often end up driving home in the dark. There is a long stretch where it's just tumbleweeds before you get to houses and streets.

In my dream, I'm driving down the dark road towards my street. It's a full moon and I'm not really paying attention to the road. I see something out of the corner of my eye. It's like a silver blur and I brake (thinking it's a rabbit) but it's not...it's a silver werewolf. It's in a half state, kind of like in Harry Potter with Professor Remus. I skid to a halt in front of it. It turns and looks at me with a woeful look, and throws it head back to howl then runs off to the other side of the road.

I drive home thinking, no one is going to believe me!!!

So I had TiVo'd a History Channel special on the Freemasons but found at the end that the whole thing hadn't taped. Stupid TiVo. Anywho, this is the first special I've watched where they talked about the Anti Mason movement that surrounded the disappearance of William Morgan. Right as the program shut off is when they started talking about the organization's charity side of the house and how it came from all of this. Interesting stuff.

Aaaaaaanywho, once upon a time you had mentioned that about 5% of the current group "gets it." That's a really really small number. I see it now as a Man's Club, where men go to get away from their homes to hang out with the boys. Don't get me wrong, I think the charity work they do is stellar, BUT how long do you think it'll take before women start suing to join?

My stuffed poo

Just bow your head in silence in about 30 minutes. That is when my brother gets off work and heads home to tell our father that he needs to find a new place to live.

NtM knows this whole sob story but my father moved in with my brother and family in April temporarily while he found a new place to live. 8 months later, he still lives with them. He is making my sister in law's a living hell. She has allowed herself to be a prisoner in her own home as she spends the evenings in the back of her house in her bedroom.

Our sister went and drove him to the disability office as he wouldn't do it for himself. Now he refuses to fill out the accompanying paperwork and lied to my brother about having done it. He belittles my sister in law and flat out hates my eldest nephew (who is 5). He told my mother once that he felt bad but that he just didn't like him and will insult him to his face. My brother just got the notice that he let his storage unit go and they're selling his stuff.

Blah blah blah. I could go on for days. No, really. Family is fun! But again, this is going to be hard for my brother because he was trying to rekindle a relationship with our father (who left when I was 6). In the end though all he's done is mooch off my brother and his family and treat them like shit.

Ok, so this has bounced from thread to thread culminating in my latest dissertation on the matter. It all started with Madame Bovary in the I've Decided thread....or was it Xmas dinners. Anyway, it ended up being transferred by one of GAFs newest members, Mary, over to the Ask a Sexy Woman Anything.

Wherein your's truly had to sound off on a piece about Buttshine and what it means to me. I figured that some of you might enjoy this discussion and/or would be interested in my take on Happy People, etc. Full credit goes to Mme. Bovary and her 'sunshine streaming from my butt', aka Buttshine.

Thus Saith the Faust:

• My problem with the Buttshine is that too often the people I encounter who are streaming sunshine out their ass have used it to completely ignore the hardcore realities of life. They are incapable of accepting that life is pain, your Highness, and anyone who tells you differently is selling something.

Superbuttshine people I've known in the past have tried to confine me to a label. Yes, they profile/stereotype me into the corner as being 'negative', cynical, or pessimistic.

However, they have also been terrified of the concept that there is no point to our existences until we make it so. Therefore, they attempt to deflect their terror by farting fairy dust at me 'til I choke.

I've had a pretty shitty set of experiences that I neither earned nor asked for happen to me over the years. I've also had a great and interesting life. I'm one tough summabitch who doesn't know how to quit. To me, that is a positive outlook. I have always overcome the miserable shit that happens in life. It happens to most people, most of the time. I choose to deal with it by accepting the reality of the situation, and facing it head on, without hesitation or fear of any result but success.

Now, before I continue, I feel it necessary to remind Mary and Madame Bovary (creator of Buttshine) that I have no problem with the manner in which they express their happiness. They are perhaps two out of seven people I've encountered whose expression of buttshine hasn't been at the expense of my opinions, experiences, or understanding. In other words, they haven't trampled on me while venting their buttshine. In fact, they have shown me with clarity that there are realists out there who still choose to be happy, rather than wallow in self-pity. I find that commendable behavior.

I've also known plenty of 'think positive' types in the past who are the first to throw their hands in the air and give up the fight to overcome lifes hardships. I can't get behind that.

Self-sabotage is unnacceptable to me. However, there are just as many Shiny Happy People who succumb to this as there are bitter, torn, and pessimistic ones.

For me, the secret of life is to not wallow in ones own misery. I watched the Uterus that Birthed me do that for 25 years. She probably still is.

Instead of the positive/negative label, I prefer to tackle the difficulties of life in a manner akin to that exhibited in my favorite children's book, The Little Engine That Could.

Whether the glass is half empty or full, odds are good its not water but shit in there. So, I'll drink it anyway and give misery the Bird.

The bottom line for me is that 'I think I can, I think I can.' I'd personally rather focus on pulling my cargo over the top of that steep, challenging hill of life, than to distract myself worrying whether or not someone is gonna think I'm positive or not.

Besides, I need the genuine Buttshine people to keep reminding me that its time to stop brooding and being darkly charismatic and to lighten up and have fun. So keep blasting me with your buttshine.

Please remember though, that as one tough summabitch with a dark coat and flaming skull, I need to remember how cool I am that I've kicked life back in the balls more than once. ;)

Oh, and for those of you who aren't 'genuine' in your buttshine....remember, my Penance Gaze will spot a buttshine bullshitter a mile off...fuggin' posers....
