What is contra dance? Why do people dance contra for decades, sometimes their entire lives? Why do contra dancers travel hundreds of miles for contra weekends and workshops?

Contra is a fun, lively highly social dance found in hundreds of cities and towns all across the US. There are some 300 contra dances in the bay area and many thousands in the US every year. Think Virginia Reel. Recall the line dances in "Gone with the Wind".

On June 9 we will combine our regular Friday Night Waltz with 4 contra dances called by Ken Olcott (who has called over 250 contra all over the country since 1991) to give you a taste for the fun of contra dancing others have enjoyed for decades. Anyone can dance the contra dances we have selected. No prior experience or skill needed.

Ken Olcott will teach a one hour introductory contra class from 8 to 9pm that will cover basic knowledge helpful to dance contra anywhere in the country.

Long time Friday Night Waltz friend Karen Tierney ( an long time member of Danse Libre and Alamda Vintage Dance Troupe performance groups) is teaching introductory waltz and Congress of Vienna in the Dance Lounge from 7 to 9 pm. Thanks Karen!

Our band tonight, a popular and long time contra band, "Fear of Commitment" ( Kathrine Gardner on violin, Craig Johnson on piano (Bangers and Mash), and Charlie Hancock on accordion (Euphonia, Swing Farm, Contrabandits) All are highly experienced dance musicians, and are eager to play waltzes.

In addition, our blues dancing is back! We will have Dj blues music in the Dance Lounge from 9 to 12 midnight. more information on blues dancing: http://www.FridayNightBlues.com
DECEMBER: Queer Contra takes a break next month – but come join us for gender-free English country dancing on Saturday, December 9, 7:30-10:30 p.m., at San Francisco’s Bethany Church (1268 Sanchez Street). Our good friend Lise Dyckman is calling! Lise has been a hearty supporter of our Queer Contra Dance since the very beginning, and we're happy to be promoting her dance.

If you're wondering what English country dancing is, it's very similar to contra, with the same basic geometry and many of the same figures. English dancing is usually more elegant and less boisterous (it's the stuff they do in the Jane Austen movies)– but if you've done one, it's very easy to learn the other, and lots of people enjoy both.

Anyway, I hope to either catch the 3rd Saturday Pasadena dance, and will be in Sacramento the weekend before Halloween so hope to get a dance in at that time. Any NoCal, Sacramento dancers here?
