I've been having a serious problem with intense hand/wrist pain whilst riding my new Fuji hybrid bike ...
Yes, the frame is the right size, etcetra ...
The grips that came with it are junky basic ones, like BMX grips ...
I am planning to get some of the ergonomic grips that are shaped to fit the hand properly/anatomically ...
Anyone think this will help or should I try another approach ?

Re: Ergo grips
Mon, May 11, 2009 - 11:46 AMI know you say that the frame, etc. is the right size, but here's my concern with that statement...
I ride long distance on a bike with unpadded cloth handlebar tape, and I have no issues with my hands/wrists. Even when the frame is the right size for the standover height and the seat is adjusted properly for your pedal stroke, many shop techs don't pay enough attention to the overall "cockpit" length when fitting someone to a bike.
If you're leaning too far forward, you'll put undue stress on your hands, wrists, arms and shoulders. Over short rides, you feel it in the hands and wrists. Over longer rides it translates to shoulder, neck and back pain. I have an easy test to see if your reach is too long:
- get into a regular riding position and remove your hands from the bars. If you're falling forward without the support of your arms, then your position is too far forward. You can remedy this with a shorter stem.
Another thing (along with ergo grips) which may eliminate pain in the hands a good pair of gloves to help absorb some of the road/trail vibrations. Also, consider a pair of bar ends to allow yourself more hand positions to alleviate stress on the wrists. -

Re: Ergo grips
Sun, May 24, 2009 - 6:41 PMSpecialised makes two models of Ergo Gel Grips that might help, they were designed by a Dr and specifically made to address the hand numbness you talk about here SynerGy
They run about 18 dollars a pair.
Of course the real answer to numb hands? is to ride a Bent Bike(Recumbent) and experience absolutally NO hand, arm, neck, shoulder, back or butt pain at all. I get a lot of Flack for saying this from devoted Roadies but it IS 100% True,Recumbent Bicycles involve none of the pain associated with upright Bicycles.

Re: Ergo grips
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 8:15 PMErgo grips help (I haven them on my flat bar road bike) but they don't work miracles.
"Intense" hand/wrist pain is not normal for any type of grip. Get your bike fitted. Like CliftonGK1 said, your weight is probably too far forward. The bars could also be too high. A fitter will be able to diagnose it better than random people in the internet.
