I guess I'm missing all intense discussion we had on the helmet issue, so I'm posting a new thread on the pro's and con's of wearing headphones/listening to music while bike riding (as it pertains to safety, etc). What are YOUR feelings on this subject?

for myself, i'd say never. i love listening to music, but need ALL of my attention for riding, not getting hit (or hitting peds on the bike path for that matter, why don't they stick to the ped path?).

this morning, i almost got hit by a car trying to park (they jumped into the bike lane without signal) and almost hit a kid who jumped in front of me on the path (his chaperone wasn't watching). in both cases there was much apologizing, but had i been listening to music, the kid would have survived only because the parking car would have killed me first.
  • I never wear anything over my ears while I ride. Not only is it unsafe, but it's illegal if I remember correctly. There is a law prohibiting the wearing of headphones while driving a motor vehicle. Also, while bicycles do have the same right of way as pedestrians, they must also follow all the same laws as motor vehicles. Thus, I believe the prohibition about wearing headphones while driving a motor vehicle applies to bicycles as well.

Wearing headphones is moronic and right up there with not wearing a helmet. ;-) Sorry, couldn't resist (see prior thread for more - lot's more - on that one!). And I believe I remember seeing it stated in the codebook that you're supposed to study for your driver's test that it is against the law. However, the law is selectively enforced.

I had just snapped into my pedals on my way to work one day a couple of years back when up ahead of me was a dizzy chick rockin' out on a mountain bike, doing her head bounce and gettin' her groove on. Which was fine, except, she wasn't really paying attention to traffic or where she was going, and she was zig-zagging. I yelled out a couple of times to let her know I wanted to pass, but she couldn't hear because she was plugged in and tuned out. So I made a quick burst and got it over with before she could zig her zag into my right flank. 3 seconds later, I've got the blue & red flashing me down. "What's the problem, officer?"
"You just scared that girl back there. She nearly fell over because of the way you just passed her."
"You have GOT to be kidding me..." We had an *interesting* - but civilized - conversation regarding stupid behavior, heavily punctuated with snide remarks and sarcastic comebacks, and he finally let me go. It's wrong, it's a pain in the ass, but still we have to make room for everyone in the bike lane, even the dumb-asses...*sigh*

I don't wear any headphones while I'm riding. It's dangerous and it screws with my cadence. Besides, I kinda like the sound of the wind. I have taped an A.M. transistor radio to my handlebars though, so I could get traffic reports when I did a lot of city riding. I used to count the number of people that had the, "f-ing traffic" look on their face as I just cruised on by. I can't count the number of times I avoided an accident because I heard a car before I saw it.
  • I got into an accident wearing headphones one time, so I haven't worn them since.

I was lucky, good thing there was no traffic around... and it's reallly hard to re-cant this story but after years of therapy I think I'm okay to speak with others about it....

it happened while I was in my garage on my "full balance" rollers, a nifty tune came on and I started boogying on the bike which caused it to drop off the rollers at full-tilt. Okay, so I only fell sideways with a minor "klunk" - but imagine if I was wearing my nice shiny new Carnac shoes, they would've been scuffed!

    ;)
  • i get into the rhythm created by the sounds of the woods and the sounds of the city, the music in my head, and especially the percussion of the bike ~ the set starts with the first peddle and coast and does not stop

the underlying feeling is not safety (though: observe), but full engagement with wherever i happen to be

hey, anyone remember Kraftwerk ~ Tour de France ?

I remember kraftwerk's tour de france. The remake/remix or whatever it is out on the astralwerks label doesn't even come close to comparing to the 12" single from the mid 80's.
If I could only find that on wax here in vegas. *sigh*

It's so nice to listen to tunes while riding...I always do it, and it never really occurred to me that it wasn't a great idea...until I got in an accident because of it. I wasn't watching where I was going and I had my headphones turned up loud and a car backing out in front of me just stopped in time to nudge me rather than squash me. Yikes...still, I admit, I still ride with headphones on, only turned down and sometimes half-off.
  • I love to listen to music while riding- and during the long stretches (or hard hills) it gives me the extra push to get me going.

The way I deal with the noise issue is that I'm only have one ear in. (Take any headphones with individual ears, and cut one off.) I also have an IPOD which is easily turned off when more attention is warrented.

It's a bit easier for me though, because I live in suburbia- within a couple blocks of a fabulous trail system that isn't used as much as it should be... so it's usually nice and empty- especially in the early hours when I ride.
