Sometimes I think these countries don't deserve to have women living in them.

This is why I do not watch CNN. They always dwell on the negative shit like this story. It just pisses me off that these poor women have to go through this everyday.

The part that pisses me off is that we DID know! Afghanistan under the Taliban was a 'cause' for years, but media downplayed groups that got involved in getting the word out as Hollywood elitists. It wasn't until 9/11 that America officially became outraged.

I believe this is part of the reason why some Muslim countries are unable to catch up with the rest of the world. Some people will blame the U. S. for all their troubles

This statement didturbs me on so many levels and I wish I was better able to verbalize.
This is not about being muslim or non muslim, it is about a tribal culture, about different ideals a different world. Being muslim does not mean you abuse women.
This has nothing to do with the US or the western world, with the so called christian nations.
Muslim countrys are not backward, some are different, some are not as commercially developed, they all have different values than the US, which supported the taliban and its all its suppressive activities as a method of fighting that specter, the Communist USSR.
Do I think women should be treated like this. Of course not. But waving the big pointy backward Muslim Nations finger is not going to help at all.

What we should all do when we put on our Kuchi jewellery is spare a thought for the woman whose dowry it was, and think of her and her sisters who live with this horrific oppression every day of their lives, who can't dance in public, who can even leave the house, who will only speak to the males in their immediate family and wont get to choose who they love.
And we should remember that our actions when we are wearing our "tribal " costumes can and do have affects on the lives of other women elsewhere in the world, and we should try and move respectfully through our lives so the waves of our actions do not drown others.

Yes this is sad but not very shocking. Do you know what the rule of thumb is? No? I'll tell you: The rule of thumb state that the stick you use to beat your wife must be no thicker than your thumb. (you say:) "Oh my god, what abominable 3rd world country could have such an inhuman law?" (I say:) The US circa 1900. Why are women singled out for such horrid treatment? Why are any one? The sad truth is that all people (you, me ever one) see differences in group and judge them to be inferior compared them selves (I certainty feel superior to the cunts featured in this article) and in time of hardship people will blame those groups in an effort to shift blame from them selves (I'm not lazy, spicks keep me from having a job!). In time, if these hardships continue over generations, social order will change radically. Here we have a moral inferior/superior question: Women inspire immorality in men-she was raped because she was dressed like a slut, cover her up. She cheated on me because she is a women and women are all sex addicts, cut off her clit (this happens every day in Africa).

This is not about being Muslim.

This is about the systematic oppression of women that has been taking place all over the world since men figured out they were stronger than us.

Not saying all men - so don't get your panties in a twist. I'm not a man hater. I am a pretty good historian and I read.

It is a fact that the less educated the people are and more isolated a place is - the more likely crimes against women will take place. The more impoverished adds to the problem. If you have nothing but your body, you will harm another's body to gain some sort of status, place or perceived thing.

Violence against women must be stopped. But it cannot be addressed by killing or jailing them all. They will never understand. This is a systematic problem that must be addressed that way. People must not be hungry, poor, or in fear to survive in a nurturing fashion. Only then will education about moral and civil rights make any sense or have any place in their world. If you know that you can walk your streets without the fear of being killed, get enough food for your family to be happy, and know that everyone in your town can do the same - your world becomes a place of peace. Then peace can flourish and the way of peace can be cultivated.

This is the path I wish the world was on.

Exactly. As far as I am concerned, this stuff qualifies as "crimes against humanity."
