I have complained about my idiot coworkers before....but their latest convesation is worth posting for your amusement.
Coworker #1: Music from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s is completely simple and lame.
Coworker #2: What? All music from those years?
Coworker #1: Yup. My college professor* was a professional musician. He taught us to play music from those times first because it was so simple. It was easy beginner music. None of it is very good, though.
Coworker #2: So nothing from those decades is good music?
Coworker #1: Nope. Nothing that was popular. Even back to the 20’s. New music is better.
Coworker #2: New music? What about jazz in the 20’s and 30’s?
Coworker #1: It’s not good. All that “waa-waa” with nothing to back it up. It’s bad music. My professor published his own music. He’s a successful music writer.
Coworker #2: Oh? Anything we’ve heard of?
Coworker #1: No. None of it got popular I don’t think. People don’t have a developed enough ear to appreciate it like I do.
*Note: Her “college” was a vocational school where she briefly took classes in Entertainment Management......and she never finished the course.

Re: A Music Lesson by, my Coworker
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 11:33 AMUmmm....and you did tell this person that they didn't know shit, right? They must really love the taste of their professors' dick to be able to discount a massive portion of musical history that still influences modern music to this day.
My taste must suck spectacularly considering that I occasionally feel almost moved to tears whenever I hear Nina, John, (fucking seriously, how can COLTRANE suck?!) Ella, Janice and many many others.
....This isn't 'hootchie boot' lady is it? Retarded blinking crown B-Day girl or are you really that unfortunate enough to work with a veritable poo poo platter of useless human waste?

Re: A Music Lesson by, my Coworker
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 11:37 AMKaleena, I'm so with you on the Nina thing. Nothing I find more sinister and chilling than Nina singing Pirate Jenny. Nothing simple about THAT song! -

Mon, May 5, 2008 - 11:46 AMYes, this IS the same "hoochie boot Birthday Princess." She is as fucking ignorant as they come.
I did not jump into the conversation because I have totally given up on her as a lost cause, by my cool coworker spoke up about some great Jazz musicians....he became frustrated after a few minutes and gave up on her, too. -

Mon, May 5, 2008 - 1:13 PMI don't blame you Petra. This chick is a complete waste of space and there's really no point in frustrating yourself.

Re: A Music Lesson by, my Coworker
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 1:05 PMOh, dear. I've had a weekend full of this kind of crap. And it's offensive to me because I am a musician and scholar, and I can't stand it when some folks have just a kernel of info and they blow it up into their own Nugget of Eternal Wisdom.

Re: A Music Lesson by, my Coworker
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 1:13 PMAnother lamebrain for Nina here, lol Her version of Black is the color of my true love's hair sends shivers up & down my spine.
Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Cab Caloway - hmm 60's would include the Beatles, Hendrix and Santana too. Even the beginnings of Led Zep. All very simple, easy music.

Re: A Music Lesson by, my Coworker
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 1:52 PMHow is it I knew EXACTLY who you were talking about before you mentioned her photographic skills. LoL!

Re: A Music Lesson by, my Coworker
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 2:51 PMReading a great book on jazz history "Black Music, White Business: Illuminating the History and Political Economy of Jazz" - nothing simple about this music nor the business that took advantage of the artists. The author (a very dear, deceased friend) did some incredible interviews with various artists and was the last person to interview Coltrane. Frank would seriously have some choice words for the idjiot co-workers ... -

Re: A Music Lesson by, my Coworker
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 3:07 PMhe was that simple... so is she... yes, every schoolkid guitarist plays 'smoke on the water' because it's easy to teach.... I am living with a professional musician who would never make such a crass and stupid statement, about any decade or genre... how old is this person ? should they be out without a responsible adult? -

My assistant manager and I were making ourselves ill the other night by asking our newest addition, a mere boy of 23, if he could recognize any of our favorite artists. He didn't know who Peter Gabriel was. He described David Bowie as "that weird skinny old guy." He didn't know who the Sex Pistols were, or the Clash, or Roxy Music, or the Police. Scary huh? -

Re: A Music Lesson by, my Coworker
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 11:31 AMnow now ladies! just because we're young, doesn't mean we can't recognize the good stuff when we hear it :p
there are some of us early 20s kids out there whose parents raised us to appriciate the music of our progenitors, and some of us even did some investigating and found it on our own, thank you very much :] -
-
Re: A Music Lesson by, my Coworker
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 12:12 PMI know there are younger people that are smart and cool and know good stuff (like yourself) but I just wish there were more. Mainly because it'd help me feel less geriatric.;)

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!
That person needs a sharp punch in the nether region for describing David Bowie that way!!!!! And not knowing the "history" of music....ugh...that's what's had me ticked off with the American Idol contestants this year (yes somehow I got sucked into that realm). They have NO clue who artists like Neil Diamond are...come on, Neil fucking Diamond!!!!!!
