I've been coloring my hair black for the past 8 years, and never missed any spots........so I thought. I have noticed some big ass visible brown spots underneath my hair...(My natural hair color is ugly mousy, diarrhea, light brown) I use two bottles of hair dye because my hair is so long. And I color my hair every 5-6 weeks, to get rid of the ugly brown spots, AKA: roots.....except for the hair underneath. I do not know why , and I just cannot get those god damned missed spots....its so frustraighting...ahhhhh!!!!

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 4:36 PM(probably a stupid question) you start at the scalp, parting 1/4 to 1/2 inch strips across the head, and then work it in? I have really long hair and when I do it, I focus primarily on the roots, and then pull through since the ends don't need a lot of touch up... -

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 4:46 PMI like they way the title came out - 'pain in the ass hair.....coloring'

Seriously I feel your pain. I'm always missing spots. i swear they must be Teflon coated or something. -

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 4:55 PMROTFLMFAO!!! Anal bleaching?! :P I should change the subject line, lol.
I just color the roots, and some on the bottom...and now the hard to reach missed spots.....grrr -

Thu, April 17, 2008 - 8:45 PMWait until they start turning grey ... the upper, not lower ... -
-
Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 9:36 PMThat's my problem. So much grey I have to touch it up every few weeks. (the upper, not the lower).
I'm thinking of letting it go grey and dying it white. Maybe i can dye the lower to match. right now i just braid it out of the way.

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 5:33 AMNow...about dying the lower and not getting technicolour thighs...any tips besides vaseline and lying spread legged on your back in bed for an hour and then gingerly walking to the shower? I still end up with technicolour. *sigh* I want the carpet to match the drapes. -

I was partial to the "Fun Betty" for a while, but never been too worried about the drapes matching the carpet --- but now it's a moot point 'cause I've gone hardwood.

I'll paint my toe nails and call it good. Shave the rest. -

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 2:24 PMNope, I find the hardwood floor look extremely unappealing. I'm all about grooming and landscaping, but the bald thing is aesthetically unappealingly for me and makes me feel extremely vulnerable and to be frank, about as far from sexy as you can get. I don't particularly like it on other people, but hey, each to his or her own, so that doesn't bother me, but on my body I want glorious fluorescent fur. Trimmed, but most decidedly present. -

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 10:22 PMlol. i love you girl. you and your bright day glow pubes. now i shall have dreams without sugar plumbs but with an assortment of neon, glow in the dark nether regions dancing about my head. hmmm contemplates how some colors of manic panic and other dyes actually are black light reactive and that down there.

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 2:58 PM*rotf* First you go grey down below and then the hair thins until you have just a wee bit nether fur. Yeehaw. I know this because as a nurse I have opportunity to see an abundance of nether fur, pretty much all of which is geriatric. -

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 8:53 PMso, if you go to the beauty supply, and buy the bottles and the peroxide separately, instead of a packaged box, heres what you can do. Get yourself the 30 volume peroxide instead of the normal 20 volume. Mix the coloring as directed on the colorant (most likely 1:1). Say you've mixed one ounce of peroxide and one ounce of developer. Use a half ounce of water to thin it out and bring the H2O2 level back down to 20. It will basically make a thinner mixture that will be alot easier to spread out to each hair strand. :)
ANother thing you might do is go to a professional once every 6 or 8 months, to get in there and really get good coverage on anything you'd missed in the past several home jobs. :) Good luck! -
-
Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 12:02 AMWhat Zira said.
Plus, if you go to a beauty supply store, you can buy a dye bottle with a longer tip than they provide in the home dye kits. Makes it way way easier to apply because you can use the tip for your 1 inch partings.

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 2:42 AMi have a trick that will likely work for you. get a butt load of boby pins or something to pin hair up. before ever mixing dye. take the very top and twist into tight high bun. then take about 1/2 to 1/4 inch thick sections at a time around your head and twist them around bun and pin. adjust thickness by how thick your hair is. each section should be thin enough to allow full coverage. anyway work down to nap of neck leaving that section free. mix dye and cover section by section working up. you should be capable of missing any. give it a try. -

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 9:21 AMI have the same problem with the back of my head. For some reason, when I first dye my hair it looks fine, but several days later the black washes out and the brown underneath shows through - a big circular patch on the back of my head. Very special looking. My cousin (who is my hairdresser) says that certain parts of some people's hair just doesn't hold dye well.
When I was dying my hair black with blue sections, I would get my oldest daughter to help me. Only fair, since she gets hers dyed professionally (gotta get that right bleached out look to resemble your favourite anime character, don't y'know?). Yeah, if someone owes you for something, I'd say pressgang them into helping you ;) -

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 10:33 AMThis is only somewhat related, but who knows, it may help...
A lot of goths (self included) *swear* by a Japanese hair dye manufactured by a company called Bigen.
It has no ammonia or peroxide or the carcinogens that are in American hair dye (and illegal to put in hair dye in Japan, as I understand).
It comes in different shades of brown, all the way to Gottthhhhh!! Black. It is gentle and it doesn't stink. It also doesn't stain skin as badly if you get it on your neck. It is easy to mix (mixes with water) and works in about 20 minutes.
You can find it at beauty supply stores in the (duh) hair dye section, and I recently discovered that Wal-Mart carries it, but they hide it in the section of various oils, conditioners, and stuff for Black people's hair (IE it isn't with the Revlon/Loreal hair dyes).
Oh, it also costs about half of what Revlon/LoReal hair dye costs.

Tue, April 22, 2008 - 12:35 PMI acutally heard about that brand. I'll try it out the next time I dye my hair (and that is in a couple weeks now, lol). Thanks :) -

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 12:44 PMPlus, the hair dye (Bigen) comes in wee little brown glass bottles with a cork and screw cap that are excellent for keeping essential oils in...

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 1:18 AMHey Katie. It looks like we are in the same group. I've known you ever since you were 17 years of age, and not once I've noticed any "missed spots". At first, I thought your natural hair color was actually black or a dark tone because you do have the skin tone to pull it off, but anyways, I would buy 1 more box of hair dye to get all of your hair so you wouldn't have to worry about those annoying missed spots.
Hope that helps. -

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 1:00 AMHey Rida! I remember when you asked me one time if my hair color was natural, lol. Damn, I wish it was naturally black, so I won't have to dye it. I don't know why it not naturally dark. My father used to have jet black hair, and my mom's hair was dark chesnut. My sister used to have dark-reddish brown hair and I got stuck with the ugly diarrhea colored brown. Grrrrr, lol. -

Re: Pain in the ass hair coloring....ahhhhh!!!
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 11:06 AMXena, I hear ya about the ugly natural color. By the way, I think we are separated sisters. You look like what I'll look like after I have a nose job (at least your profile shot does; I haven't seen your other pics). : )
