I love my job, but my tiny department (all five of us) just got moved to the fucking NOISIEST PART OF THE WHOLE FUCKING BUILDING.

So this is to them...and yeah I know I'm yelling:

I AM AN EDITOR. TV EDITORS NEED TO BE ABLE TO HEAR WHAT THE FUCK THEY'RE WORKING ON. I HAVE FANCY NOISE-CANCELLING HEADPHONES BUT CAN STILL HEAR THE RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF NOISE THAT IS IN THIS AREA.

YOU MOVED US RIGHT NEAR THE FRONT DOOR, WHICH MAKES A 'BING' NOISE EVERY TIME IT'S OPENED. YOU PUT US RIGHT NEAR THE MAIN STAIRWAY AND DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH A WALKWAY WHICH HAS A METAL GRATE BOTTOM...MEANING THAT IF ANYONE SPILLS THEIR COFFEE, IT GOES ON MY HEAD--AND ALL OVER YOUR EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT.

YOU MOVED US RIGHT NEXT TO THE KITCHEN AREA--THE ONE PLACE LEFT IN OUR COMPANY WHERE PEOPLE CAN CONGREGATE SOCIALLY. THIS MEANS THAT BETWEEN 9-10AM, 12-1PM AND AROUND 4PM IT GETS EVEN LOUDER SINCE PEOPLE GATHER TO MAKE FOOD, TALK ABOUT THEIR WEEKENDS, AND CHAT. I DO NOT WANT TO STOP THEM FROM CHATTING...NO ONE SHOULD BE SITTING HERE SO FUCKING CLOSE TO THEM!!

I HAD NO IDEA HOW MANY WOMEN WEAR HIGH HEELS IN THIS COMPANY--NOW I DO. MANY, MANY WOMEN HERE WEAR HIGH HEELS THAT GO CLICKETY-CLACK WITH EVERY GODDAMN STEP THEY TAKE.

THANKS FOR PUTTING ME IN DIRECT EYE-LINE TO EVERY SINGLE PERSON COMING DOWN THE MAIN STAIRS. LET'S NOT FORGET THOSE THAT SHOUT THINGS FROM HALFWAY DOWN THE STAIRS TO PEOPLE ACROSS MY FLOOR. MY DEPARTMENT HAS ALREADY INSTITUTED A TOTAL-IGNORE-RESPONSE TO ANYONE TRYING TO TALK TO US FROM THE STAIRS. FUCK YOU, COME ALL THE WAY DOWN HERE YOU LAZY MOTHERFUCKERS.

AN EVEN LARGER FUCK-YOU TO THOSE PEOPLE WITH GIGANTIC LUXURIOUS CUBICLES UPSTAIRS WHO NOW LOOK AT US WITH PITY AS THE DESCEND THE STAIRS. YEAH, I'M TALKING TO YOU, ONLINE DEPARTMENT. DON'T THINK WE DON'T KNOW HOW UNFAIR IT IS THAT YOU STILL HAVE AS MUCH SPACE AS YOU DO WHILE WE ARE NOW SITTING IN A SPACE THAT WAS NEVER MEANT FOR PEOPLE TO SIT IN.

Company, I need quiet in order to work. And the fact is that it is simply a stunning amount of noise in here. This is just about the poorest planning I have ever fucking seen, and this company is supposed to be progressive? GO FUCK YOURSELF.

Oh lordy...at my boss' request I wrote a much nicer version of this to him so he could send it to our executive producer, and she is concerned enough that she wants to send it to the higher-ups. My boss (who sits right across from me and is almost equally as upset as I am) is totally behind my concerns, so I agreed that our EP could send it up.

I leave for vacation in a week. Sure hope I have a job when I get back. They don't actually need a reason to fire me.

TV editor?*waves* I work in Animation - albeit as a receptionist/PA, the hubby is a designer/animator. This sounds like standard entertainment industry crap to me. That was a decicion made by someone who has no understanding of what you actually do.

It boils down to this: If they want their product, they *have* to give you an environment in which to produce it for them. Period. Even if it's a broom closet, they have to put you somewhere you can work, or they get substandard work. Glad your boss at least has your back.

Oh do I feel your pain. I work in an acoustic physics lab analyzing raw sound data, and it needs to be graveyard quiet in there to get my work done. I end up being so sono-sensitive that even walking out of the lab and into the "normal" world hurts my head. Loud noises suck.

Cuindless, I'm probably going to regret asking, but what exactly do you *do* when you analyze raw sound data? What do those last four words mean? What is "raw sound" and what are you analyzing it for?

I hate it when women get together nearby and start talking, getting more and more wound up, and more and more high pitched (is this a Southern thing?). Their voices are so high pitched and annoying I can see why some guys think women are twits.

I agree slade.....(and I'm curious about the raw sound thing too)...

There are 4 women (FOUR only) that were moved onto my area of cubicells and sometimes even WITH my Ipod blasting I can hear them yammering on about nothing...

I know more about their lives than I ever wished to. Maybe i should start stopping by asking "who's so-n-so?" "Is such-n-such still dating that heartless bitch?"

        sheesh

Glad you got moved GP but sorry that they seperated everyone...upper managment are idiots no matter what field you work in apparently..

Oh boy... how do I explain this without giving you guys a Ph.D. dissertation on acoustic wave physics. Basically, I take raw, unfiltered sound from hydrophones (underwater microphones) and analyze it for abnormalities. I do so using a miscellany of different computers and machines, but one of the requirements is that I use my Mark 1 Analog "Ear". Beyond that I can't really explain for a variety of reasons.

Geeking out to the words Cuindless is saying. Not that I understand mind you, but anything relating to sound makes me all geeky gooey (linguistics geek, and love anything to do with sounds and wavelengths and such).

When I met my DH (at a Star Wars convention <- big geek points there), he mentioned he had been a code breaker and spent lots of time listening to squeeks and beeps (as he called them) in the Army back before the wall came down in Germany, and I also went all geeky gooey.

Sounds like you might have some kind of similarities in your work.....with regard to security and such that is.

Ahh! He's a "Squeek and Beep" guy! Cool. Tell him I work with some of the "Sticks and Blobs" guys. Also tell him also that I'm "Ping and Blip" guy... though sometimes I'm a "Dots and Lines" guy. Good to know there's an intel widow in the room.

    Update:

Our CEO came up to me and thanked me for my input, saying that the situation was unacceptable. The head of programming extended his personal apology to me through our executive producer. They've offered to move us back downstairs to our own space...long story but while it's still not nearly ideal, it would be MUCH quieter and overall better than it is here.

So...things are moving. I feel good for making my voice heard. And for those who mentioned possible illegal work hazards...yeah we think that perhaps they realized that the situation might actually get them in trouble. But even if that is what is forcing their hand, I still am happy for the personal words and for the speed with which they're dealing with it.
