And I've never done one before. One of my troupe members insists on wearing a pretty non-supportive, cups spillith over bra. She insists it fits and then proceeds to do lots of shoulder shimmies to show us her "girls" won't fall out. Up until recently she was using the same bra from 40 lbs ago but replaced it with one that fits danged near the same. EEK! We've made mostly subtle comments but it's hard to look at her when her breasts, they are a heaving. Have any of you ever had to stage a costume intervention?

I once had to take an aquaintance aside and gently point out that doing floorwork in a straight skirt with a front slit was a 'bad idea' (tm).
Fortunately my opinion mattered enough that she took it. Pointing out that she crotched almost the entire audience may have helped. (Thankfully there was underwear.) I fully blame her teacher for not pointing this out sooner.

*sigh* a good fit has little to do with whether the 'girls' fall out or not.

What about this.......the rest of your troupe agrees to split the cost of a really good quality, fitted bra. Find a high-end department store that offers bra fitting and take her shopping for a new bra - your treat. Tell her if she absolutely hates it, you won't bring it up again or something.
I bet that once she experiences a well fitting, good quality brasierre, she will look and feel like a new woman. A good fit will flatter her figure and probably take a few inches off her silhouette, too.
If price is an issue, you can talk to the fitter beforehand and set a price limit for the fitting session.

If that doesn't work, it may be time to call Oprah.

Or What Not to Wear. I wonder if they would ever do a bellydance edition? Video footage, 360 degree mirror and all.

Or Tim Gunn, they cover that on his show too. I love his freaking voice!! :D

I tried responding to this last night but tribe choked and it didn't post.

Has anyone showed her video footage of what she looks like with the offending bra? I mean, video of her performing with her girls bouncing all over the place, so she can see how UNattractive that is?

As far as What Not to Wear (LOVE that show) I doubt Clinton and Stacey would have a CLUE about belly dance costumes!!!

You're right about Clinton and Stacey not having a clue. But I have to admit that if they did and were offering up $5,000 to shop for costumes, I would probably dress in rags and let the girls bounce around on video to have a chance at snagging it.

            I admit it, I'm a costume whore.

Back on topic, I think the video tape idea is a great one.

If she wears over a size12, Lane Bryant offers bra fitting and has a great selection of bras that go up to a size 46dd that could be used to make costume bras.

Does any troupe member have a video camera? Maybe if you tape her dancing and she can see that the heaving boobage distracts from her dancing?

Another thought - There's a clip on youtube of some poor dancer with a really big bust whose bra popped in front and the girls just came all out. Luckily she had a veil and was able to wrap herself to finish and leave the stage. Maybe find that clip and show her what happens when boobs run wild?

I ditto the recommendation of Lane Bryant bras!

remind her there is more than just keeping the girls in
you want your audience to feel comfortable and not embarrassed or intimitated watching
and well a few large boobs looking like they are going to explode into nipple exposure will freak the audience a=out
        AND
if there are tween boys or even early teen boys in the audience.... well it just gives them the wrong idea
and since we dancers are trying really hard to counter the image of bellydancer = stripper/whore
try not to give those sacks of rushing hormones the wrong idea

we have one local dancer, nice lady, bad fitting bra, new boobs
the embarrassed nervous giggled that came out of this on 12 year old boys mouth.......

She doesn't even have to wear over a size 12. Their bras start at a 36 band. My sister (a size 8/9), can wear their 36C in the cup since the 34D she actually wears is so difficult to find.

34 anything is a bit of a hard find - I almost always end up with a 36, and take it in as needed. I try to get the best fit in the cups first, the elastic I can always fix. I just told a friends teenaged niece (32 D) that trick, suddenly she's gone from baggy sweatshirts to tight t's. The boys are happy, not too sure about her family. :0)

Victoria's Secret (when they have their annual clearance) - but get them online - they have terrific deals that way. I am a petite around my rib cage, but have overgrown girls, and wear a 34 DD. Body by Victoria works well. they handle good side boobage, too (so you don't look like boobs are growing out of your armpits).

I've found doing the sister cup thing (going to a 36 C) doesn't work so well. the cup may fit, but the band for the rib cage floats and slides away... very uncomfortable and non-secure feeling.

Title Nine is awesome for excersize bras.

Oops - forgot to mention that Victoria's Secret Online offers much more size selection than in the store - but you can get a great fit job in store - depending on location they may or may not have the size you need and you will have to shop online, though.

When we first met she was like a size 8 maybe 10. Over the years the pounds have been creeping up and after she broke her leg (each one) two years in a row she went up to a size 18. She's in denial but at the same time knows she's gained weight. I have several costumes in different sizes because I know how my weight fluctuates. She refuses to make new costumes. When we're getting ready for a show and trying to decide what to wear her answer is she'll wear, "what fits." I honestly don't think she would have thought to replace the bra if it hadn't been breaking down (elastic was not stretching anymore). When she announced she was replacing it we were all YEAH! Ohh that's your new bra, eh?

Lane Bryant is an awesome idea! Now, to get her there.

Girls' day out? Lunch, shopping, "Oh, let's go to LB and play dress up!" "Miss, can you help us find the right bra for our girl's bodacious boobs? We want to make sure that they're presented in all their glory."

And they would insist on a "pointed-toe shoe". Walking means nothing to this woman.
