So... One year ago today I was in a car accident. An old lady ran a red light and hit the front passenger side fender of my car, sending me spinning. When I finally came to a stop the car had spun one and a half full turns!
Since then I have had lower back pain & my right hip (SI joint is damaged) pops out of place. Hurts like hell! I have seen several doctors . All the Docs say i need an MRI. I have metal plating in my face from an accident 11yrs ago. Not wanting to risk it, they finally sent me for a CT Scan.
It shows a couple things but can't be for sure, for sure without a MRI...... Hello????
So now what??? Can I or can I not have an MRI? I have been told both yes, you will be fine & no the magnet in that thing will pull that metal right out of your face! So, I was sent home with no MRI & no answers!!!
Anybody have any experience with this?
Oh & since today is the 1 yr mark, I now get to figure out how to pay for any further treatments on my own & they will reimburse me thru a settlement OR so my piece of shit attorney tells me!

Re: MRI???
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 8:22 PMI entirely depends on the makeup of the metal plate in your head. Certain metal alloys will fly right into the MRI machine. Certain ones are not magnetic and will not. The neurosurgeon who placed the plate in your head will be able to tell you what s/he used. You can also attempt to obtain in-patient records from the hospital in which the plate was surgically placed. Make sure you specify "operative reports", they usually will give you a description of the type of hardware that was placed in the patient during the surgery.
Good luck!

Tue, April 22, 2008 - 11:39 AM"you should have no trouble and since its your lower back they can have your top half outside of the scanner"
When I was a student, the radiologist gave me a small metal chain to hold and said "Wrap this tightly around your hand and go stand in the doorway of the MRI room." The chain moved from a plumb line position to a 45 degree angle immediately. He then said, "Go a few steps further in." The chain then stood parallel to the floor. He then said, "Stand a yard away from the MRI machine." At that point I was being pulled into the machine by the chain. I exerted all of my energy to walk out of the room with the chain firmly gripped in my hand. The radiologist said, "I want you to remember this. This is why we make sure a patient has no metal on them before entering here." It's been over 10 years and I never forgot that lesson.
A metallic pen from your pocket will fly across a room to reach an MRI. The keys in your pocket will pull your jeans towards an MRI. An MRI will demagnetize all the credit cards in your wallet. Imagine what it would do to a metal skull plate.
I don't mean to scare you by all of this. Most plates are made with alloys that are not magnetic for this very circumstance. But until you know for sure, I would not risk it. -

Re: MRI???
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 3:44 AMyes I know this... I actually was an MRI tech for a lab I worked in last year. I made that statement about the body part with metal in it being outside the scanner because when metal is inside tissue, and they start the scan, that is when it can start to feel hot and can travel ... this is while completely inside the scanner. When the metal is outside the scanner, the discomfort is less so. More than likely she has a metal plate that is compatible with the scanner. She needs to check her medical records for the type of plate and then report that when the appointment is made. The tech will let her know if she can still do it.

Re: MRI???
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 11:54 AMDONT settle! If you still need medical care DO NOT settle. There is no way to estimate future required medical care (especially if they havent been able to properly asses what the problem is.) I dont know if the laws are different there than in California, but i know here, you dont have to settle even though lawyers (crappy ones) and insurance and lots of people will tell you to, or that you have to. If you settle, you run the risk of your medical care being much higher than what your settlement was and you will be unable to pay for it. Dont settle, keep your claim open until you figure out exactly whats wrong, fix it, and recover. When your conditiojn is stable, then consider settling.
I have worked with a LOT of personal injury/auto accident cases and so often see someone that was pressured to settle when they shouldnt have and it just hurt them financially in the long run (before this job I worked for 6 years doing all the charts and billing in a chiropractic office.)

Re: MRI???
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 1:20 PMOk, I know you will hate this but MRI is horrible! Dunno, if you´ve been through it but i ran away from it.... They put me into that damn thing and then it started and after like 5 minutes i gave up singing " Twinkle Twinkle little star" in my head to de-stress me and squeezed the "Emergency-button" they gave me before it started..I freaked out and cried like a baby....I took my stuf and ran away...Man!! That was so embarrassing!!! But im a claustrophobic for fucks sake!!! And this was a few months after my dad died and that fucking tunnel reminded me of a coffin etc..hope you get the picture....BUT!!!! One thing is true!!! The MRI sees everthing...and I mean EVERYTHING that happenes in your body and it could help with your problems.....But if you have metall plates in your face....thats wierd that they wanna send you to the MRI...I mean i had to take out all my piercings that day so I can hardly imagine that they could let you in with that powerfull magnet going on there...Anyway, wish you loads of luck, strengh and health.... -
