Really Bad....

My uncle died on Monday after a battle with stomach cancer and its really bad when I need to take time off from work and I am worried about what the hell my boss is going to say.

My boss is on vacation, coming back tomorrow, but I am taking tomorrow and Friday off for my uncles wake and funeral.

I dont necessarily need to take Friday off, but its the first time in 15 years that my entire family on my mom's side is together (last time was for my cousins big ass $50,000 wedding--off note: they are divorced now......).

This is the first time in a long time that my mom, aunt from Hopkinton, Aunt from Maine and Uncle from TX as well as all my cousins are together--and frankly, I want to take the day off to spend with my chaotic, dysfunctional and disruptive family.

Besides, I have 2 weeks in earned time....not including the extra 2 weeks of sick time....

My problem is that I will be off next Friday and the week after to visit my folks in TN for a PLANNED vacation...and I know my boss is gonna bitch about me taking this Friday off.

I am such a good doobie, I always hate conflict, but ya know what--if she gives me grief on Monday--I am going to flip the fuck out.....I didnt PLAN on having my uncle DIE....

Oh yeah...

And I will give my one fingered salut to her if she even dares to tell me I was wrong for taking the day off.

    You are allowed a full week of bereavement leave, so tell them to bugger off and take three days off if you want! The hospital I work at actually paid me bereavement pay, so I didn't need to use my CTO to cover the days off.

    Sorry for your loss, my uncle is battling cancer right now, so I completely empathise. Your boss can't do anything to you if you use a sick day. The company I work for is the same way, I only get bereavement leave for immediate family. That doesn't include aunts, uncles, etc. But if you have accrued sick leave your boss shouldn't be able to say shit about you taking it. Take care.

      Shouldnt--but she will. She gave me shit back in Aug. when I had to take 2 weeks off for gall bladder surgery! She's a douche bag.

        yes your company should be offering bereavement leave. I know my company offers it for immediate and extended family for 3 days.

        Heck I know a woman who took three days for her cat's death (I would too)

        Your boss can chill or you can go to the Employment Commission..That's harrassment for her to give you shit for medical or bereavement leave....

    Bleh. I had a boss like that once. I had an allergic reaction to a flu shot and wound up in the ER. When I called in sick she told me I had to come in to work because it wasn’t convenient to her for me to be out. I was on to bigger and better things less than a month after that – and used my vacation time as my two weeks notice.

    Perhaps you could call your HR department and ask them what the company covers. Get them to send you the bereavement policy in writing. With family structures becoming more and more “non-traditional” many places will make exceptions to the immediate family rule if you go through channels and request it.

    And document everything. If the crap really hits the fan, that type of specific info could prove very useful.

    i was *exactly* in your shoes a few months ago, however my aunt is in recovery from breast cancer and I took only a friday off, and other stuff. But I completely sympathize with you. *Wishing you strength if there's a confrontation and hoping something better falls in your lap soon!*
