by members of Local I-26, IAFF in Manhattan yesterday.
The Local represents the members of the Uniformed Fire Patrolmans Assn (the Patrolmen of the NYFire Patrol...the oldest fire service organization in the US and last insurance company funded fire insurance salvage corps as well) are in danger of unemployment by the end of the year.
Here are some photos that were shot at the rally. The one guy brought his handsome devil of a son in kiddie sized fire gear and his pop's helmet.

Re: informational rally
Fri, June 16, 2006 - 3:05 PMWhat a shame. And you know they'll end up needing to hire more paid FFs when they realize what they've lost. And they'll never be able to pay for the experience they're losing. -

Re: informational rally
Fri, June 16, 2006 - 3:11 PMno they wont...the patrol works for the insurance industry not the City. They protect the contents of the buildings from water and smoke damage to minimize insurance losses. The way its theorized right now, FDNY Truck Companies will probably be tapped to pick up the Patrol's duties. Theyres still legal mandate for salvage duties to be performed. And the insurance companies will take the losses and compensate by raising premiums. Which could drive a lot of already financially shaky businesses out of NYC.

Wed, July 5, 2006 - 1:00 PMMichael, I'm so sorry. That really stinks. Will be interesting to see how things go after that.
Will you have a way to stay involved in fire service? -

Re: informational rally
Wed, July 5, 2006 - 11:38 PMnope.
After 23 years of service as a FDNY Auxiliary and Fire Patrolman, its over. Even now I totally choke up when I see a unit responding knowing that its almost over for me. -

Tue, July 11, 2006 - 3:17 PMI wish I knew what to say.
{sniff, sniff}
I'll be thinking about you and praying for a miracle (hey, you never know).
:)
Can you apply to the regular department? I'd think you'd have an advantage over most of the applicants.
