Hello Lovelies,

I've been asked to create dreads for guys that do not have the thick strong hair on top, and I'm never that sure what to do.

I try to make dreads super lightweight because I read so many stories of the hair being pulled out by heavy dreads and long wear. I haven't come up with anything that makes me happy...

any suggestions on what works? Thanks - Cinn : ).

Hi Pumkin! - i'm so excited! it's the first post on my Tribe!...WEEEEE... now, i'll try to articulate my answer to your query..........by the by, other opinions are incredibly welcome, please speak up - mine is only one answer...there are always many solutions to a quandry.

I actually work with this situation frequently and often.....it takes a strong element of forthought to design an appropriate lock for the thin on top.

    www.follicle.com/hair-stru...cycle.html

    - That link takes you to a site that describes the 3 phases your follicles cycle through. With that info, you need to be sure there is enough length first of all, like 4 inches, so you can comfortibley make a large section, like 1.5 inches and up in circumferince of the base. To make this section sturdy, you should use hairpolice or the like string to first base tie the section -NOT TIGHT! - , it makes and keeps the base strong and captures all shed hair inside the lock, as well as gives more grab to the synth dreads you will attatch. Your synth dread should be created in the head to allow for proper engineering and design. Use a micro pinch braid attatchment method, using a very slight amount of synth hair. Don't make the pinch braid tight against the scalp, adjust for some flexibility. It's the final tying of the braid that keeps it from slipping - not the tension at the scalp. Those wanting to wear dreads that have compromised hair growth should commit to monthly base tying in the areas that are weak. If you are experienced in pinch braids, base ties, and lock creation, you can pull this off like a breeze.
