Hey Folks,
Ran into an issue recently: every time I attempted to log on to this site with exciting new grants 4-1-1, Tribe was down. Blech. I'll start checking more frequently so I can keep you apprised of upcoming possibilities.

And for now: it's year-end, which means its your last chance to make a tax-deductible gift for 2007. If you're looking for an art-related year-end giving opportunity, Oregon College of Art and Craft is accepting donations for program and scholarship support.

Why donate to OCAC? In addition to being the regional underdog art school, OCAC is the only Portland school that commits to 20% of Art Adventures summer camp students being scholarship students from disadvantaged homes. Last year, OCAC granted 234 scholarships. Journeys in Creativity, their program for Native American students, is 100% scholarship-funded. That program is successful enough that student artwork will be featured at the Smithsonian Museum of Native American Art in March 2008.

So, without further ado:

http://www.ocac.edu/contribute/

And all others: please feel free to list your organization here if it is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit!

CREATIVE CAPITAL GRANTS IN VISUAL ARTS AND FILM/VIDEO AVAILABLE IN FEBRUARY 2007
Six new program consultants to lead selection process

NEW YORK, NY (November 16, 2006) – Artists nationwide will have a chance to promote their works-in-progress and works-to-be when the nonprofit arts organization Creative Capital accepts proposals for its 2007 grant cycle supporting projects in the visual arts and film/video. To apply, artists must first submit an inquiry form, which will be available February 5, 2007 on the foundation’s website, www.creative-capital.org. The deadline for completed forms is March 5, 2007; those invited to submit an application with work samples will be notified in June 2007.

For the first time, Creative Capital has appointed two outside teams of arts professionals to assist in the selection process leading to as many as 40 grants. Each team will consist of three program consultants, with one designated as lead consultant, working together to review proposals at each stage of the application process. The consultants for visual arts are: Romi Crawford, lead program consultant and director of the Visiting Artists Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Lauri Firstenberg, director of LAX Art in Los Angeles; and Gilbert Vicario, assistant curator of Latin American Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas. For film/video, the consultants are: Andrea Grover, lead program consultant and director of Aurora Picture Show in Houston; Kelly DeVine, former acquisitions executive for the Independent Film Channel (IFC), currently artistic director for the Global Peace Film Festival and independent programmer based in Port Jefferson, New York; and Shari Frilot, programmer for the Sundance Film Festival. Ms. Frilot resides in Los Angeles.

Since awarding its first grants in 2000, the organization has earned a reputation for identifying and supporting innovative artists and projects across the country—work that has gone on to earn many of the field’s highest honors, including Tony and Academy Award nominations and Rome Prizes. It is anticipated that the consultant teams, bringing many years of experience and expertise in the industry, will make significant contributions to the process. “We welcome the opportunity to work with the program consultants,” said Creative Capital executive director Ruby Lerner. “Their vast knowledge and passion for artists will be invaluable assets as we move through the upcoming grant round.”

In keeping with the organization’s multi-level commitment to its grantees, at least $1 million is allocated for the selected projects in the first year. Additionally, over the term of the grant, these projects receive follow-up support and can garner as much
as $80,000 each in direct monies and services. Moreover, the grantees gain access to an extensive network of peers and arts professionals who can assist in fundraising, promotional, and presenting opportunities. This comprehensive approach to funding has become the hallmark of Creative Capital’s work with artists.

Grant Calendar 2007
February 5: Inquiry forms available (Visual Arts and Film/Video)
March 5: Deadline for completed inquiry forms
June: Notification of results; applicants selected
July: Deadline for completed applications and work samples
January 2008: Announcement of awards

About Creative Capital
Founded in January 1999, Creative Capital Foundation is a national nonprofit organization that supports individual artists pursuing innovative approaches to form and content in the visual and performing arts, film/video, emerging fields, and innovative literature. To date, the organization has awarded nearly $6 million to 242 artist projects and has provided those artists with a range of advisory and skills-building services.

Since its inception, Creative Capital has developed a unique system of support for artists that is integrated, multi-faceted, and sequential. Drawing on concepts from both the venture capital and nonprofit sectors, the foundation commits to a long-term partnership with its funded artists through the life of the project. In addition, grantees agree to share a small percentage of any net profits generated by their projects with Creative Capital, which applies these funds toward new grants. A complete list of grantees, profiles of funded projects, and up-to-date grant cycle information can be found online at the foundation’s website at www.creative-capital.org.

Sustaining support for Creative Capital is currently provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, The Ford Foundation, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, The William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, The Nathan Cummings Foundation, The Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, and more than 60 other foundations and individuals.
From the website:
"As traditional sources of funding for working artists have diminished significantly in recent years, artist residency programs have played a vital role in offering support once made available by foundations and government agencies. Hall Farm Center grants residency fellowships of up to one month to emerging and established artists working in a variety of media, providing them with the time and space to explore their craft and create new work in the quiet refuge of our 221-acre retreat in southern Vermont. Artists in residence are provided with private housing, studio space, meals and uninterrupted time in which to pursue their creative endeavors. Sensitive to the struggle to balance financial stability with time spent on creative work, Hall Farm awards residencies at no cost to artists."

The Travel and Study Grant Program awards grants to emerging artists who create new work (music: composers and sound artists; theater: playwrights and creators of performance art and experimental theater; and visual artists). Funds support periods of travel for the purpose of study, exploration, and growth. The program supports such activities as research leading to the creation of new work, the development of collaborations, participation in specific training programs, time for reflection and individualized study, investigating artistic work outside of Minnesota or New York City, and dialogue on aesthetic issues.

Awards are made once per year. Three-person selection panels in each eligible discipline review proposals and recommend recipients to the Jerome Foundation Board, which approves all grants. Selection is based on the quality and potential of the applicant’s work and the significance and appropriateness of the proposed trip. The Foundation may choose to review applications in a two-step process incorporating a first-round screening before panelists review the remaining applications. This program receives many applications and has limited funds available. Although financial need is not a requirement, please consider whether you need these funds to undertake a travel and study trip.

Hello All:
I was thinking about the various projects/ideas that will be seeking money for Burning Man 2007, and other creative endeavors in general, and I started considering questions worth asking yourself/your project before seeking money. And without further ado, here they are:

1.) How do you plan to seek money: as an individual, or as a 501c3, or as an LLC or some other kind of business?

2.) What are your fundraising ethics? Will you accept money from businesses, individuals, any and all foundations? Think about who you would *not* like to accept money from.

3.) How much money do you need? What do you need it for? This includes creating a line-item budget that demonstrates research into actual costs. Additionally, this means formulating a fundraising plan that can include things like drawing money from your own budget, throwing parties/fundraisers, a list of foundations you'll seek support from, a list of individuals that would provide monetary or in-kind support (including supplies and space donation), etc. Just about any grant you apply for will want to see a budget.

4.) How soon do you need it? If you need money immediately, grants-related fundraising generally won't be an option for you; if you can wait 8-12 weeks to get started, it is.

5.) What kind of support do you enjoy/do you anticipate enjoying in your community? Are there people who would write letters of support for you? If you applied for regional support from community-centered foundations, do you anticipate positive response?

6.) How is your project unique? What will it contribute to the art world? Note: please be aware of people/groups/etc who have attempted or completed similar things. It's not *bad* to do something intentionally/unintentionally similar to something that has already been done; to describe your art as the most unique thing since Van Gogh mailed his ear to his girlfriend when in actuality it isn't makes you look ignorant about what's going on in your field. This is very, very bad.

7.) How do foundations, individuals, etc., benefit from supporting you? For many foundations, the only benefit they seek is being part of brining more art into the universe; others want to be validated in some way. This can be as simple as a press release, or as complicated as having to announce them as your official sponsor. What are you comfortable with?

That's all for now. I encourage others to add their two-cents, contributing to this list; it's definitely not complete. Thoughts?

I'm wondering if anyone has had a positive or negative experience with a "membership based" organization. I'm currently a member of AWP (Associated Writing Programs) and have been for 5+ years, because it's worth every dime: magazines, newsletters, free online services, access to grant info, contest info, etc., discounts to attend conferences, etc. I'm also a subscriber to Guidestar's Grantseeker service. If this wasn't paid for by my employer I'd consider it a total waste of resources. Sure, you have access to lots of information about potential funders, but if you don't already know what you're looking for, it's a waste. Foundation Center, on the other hand, has lots of free services you can subscribe to that provide scores of delicious information.
The Lilla Jewel Award for Women Artists was established at the request of a donor in recognition of the fact that women artists have traditionally been underfunded. It is open to women artists residing in Oregon. It is the only MRG Foundation grant available to individuals and the only funding offered specifically for the arts. The award is based on the information submitted on the Lilla Jewel Fund application and a sample of past work rather than for specific projects.

The artistic categories rotate and include Media and Multi-Arts, Visual Arts and Music and/or Dance. The award recipient is chosen by a panel of peers. All panelists are women with a background in the arts, and the majority of panelists are racial and/or sexual minorites. Women who are interested in applying for the Lilla Jewel Award should send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to MRG Foundation's Portland office.

Yes, that's right, I want to build the mother of all BM-type art projects. Without giving away my idea, specifically I want to make a sculpture that is basically a torus (geometry term for a donut) with a major diameter (width of the center opening) of about 80 ft. and a minor diameter (the width of the torus itself) of 8ft. This would require a significant amount of time, labor, steel/aluminum materials, other materials, and transportation costs.

I'd say this piece will have a very high impact at Burning Man, especially since it glows and is climbable (what could be better?!). There are no hydraulics, no fire, and no computers (if funding with the corporation with the new technology doesn't happen). The toughest stuff that I'm not as familiar with will be proposals, steel/aluminum construction, lighting and power (preferably green power like solar, etc.), and acquiring the labor and materials of course. I'd like to get a sculptural engineer on board to make sure no one will get hurt on this thing. In fact, I'd like to combine my vision with someone else's experience to make a great winning team that will bring this thing to life.

I know one of the major organizing (or maybe just fundraising) people from Entheon, so I can ask her for ideas, but I'd really like to know what other people out there think. Any ideas?

Any artists willing to collaborate on a big Burning Man art project? Join us.... (Brains! Brains!... *ahem*...) Join us!

I'm based in Chicago, so help from that area would be preferable, but not necessary. If you're a sculptural engineer or grant writer or similar intellectually-abled talent, then we can tele-converse. ;-) If you just want to help with construction or a massive sculpture performance at Burning Man, that's cool too. But funding and design come first.

Questions for Coyote:
1) How do I write up a proposal to a corporation or organization in such a way that maintains the safety of my intellectual property? What's to keep them from stealing the idea after I propose it to them?

2) Do you know any grant writers in Chicago?

3) Do you know what kind of organizations are best to approach for large outdoor sculpture projects?

4) Do you want to be my grant writer? If I can get funding and the new technology from the corporation I have in mind, this art project will be beyond mind blowing!!

Hello strangers and friends and soon-to-be-friends and Internet-based co-conspirators:
Welcome to Filthy Lucre.

Every two weeks I get a paycheck from a large nonprofit organization. Then I get food and pay bills. It's about as inspiring as it sounds.

Here's the upside: grant writing is a skill, and a valuable one at that. I hope to start my own nonprofit one day, and there's no chance of achieving this goal without knowing how to do exactly what I'm doing right now. A major component of grant writing is research, and I spend several hours each day mining through giant swaths of data in hopes of finding matches for our "fundraising efforts". What I've found is that, in the course of doing this, I come across tons of funding opportunities for artists, writers, and creatives of all flavors. Since this is the type of information I'm generally mining for in order to fund my own creative endeavors, locating it is really exciting. It's even better to share it with other artists and writers.

So: take this information, use it, pass it on. Post your own 4-1-1. Ask questions about grant writing, reporting, the integrity of the foundations, necessary research, the construction of a personal budget. Inquire about fellowships, scholarships, airships and relation-ships. Request editing support, encouragement from peers, or universal high-fives.

We are not competing with each other; we are reaching for similar things. Hurrah for more art, and more artists living as artists.
Community-love,
Coyote Red
