Hi Folks:
I have been posting blurbs around the internet about Chris.
I post the website, a short blurb, maybe a few other things.
Thought it might help to keep up awareness about him.
I post on Craig's List. Craig's List has a policy that you can't repeat ads. What that does is limit me to posting two or three.
I thought that if we could divide up the work, we might be able to spread the word on more boards.
Craig's List has geographic boards and I would like to hit as many areas out West as possible.
What do folks think? A good idea? Not really?
Anyone up to split up some of the posting with me?
thanks,
Jon

Re: Project Idea
Mon, March 3, 2008 - 1:24 PMI would be happy to post, especially if there is a "script" for me to cut and paste. I live in Salt Lake, just tell what and which area's you would like me to post and I will do it.

Tue, March 4, 2008 - 6:34 AMgreat! thanks!
well CoCo, if you are up for Utah, that would be great.
I would try to hit as many areas as you can.
The thing about Craig's List is that it doesn't take repeat posts. So you have to change the language each time you post.
I think the posts can be renewed every two weeks? Something like that.
I will put some text below, of what I have done, but again, unless the language varies from post to post, Craig's List won't take it:
I would make sure to include the website. I have also included a link to a news article. I think that gives the post further credence.

Christopher Roan,18, has been missing since September 3rd.
Please help his family find Chris.
Chris's mom has launched a website:
www.findchris.org/
(the website has pictures, description of vehicle, contact information for law enforcement, etc.)
Here is a news article on the case:
www.ksl.com/
Please pass this along.
Thanks you for your time.

Re: Project Idea
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 6:36 AMErin, if you are from California, why don't you take that?
Chris has a strong connection to California, so it is possible that he went there.
Maybe referencing that in the post will help as well, since he went missing in a different state and some people might be confused.
here's hoping this helps! -

Re: Project Idea
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 4:38 PMHi Coco,
You are so sweet to help out, thank you . . . He has been Physically or psychically sighted (or the Blazer has) in numerous desolate places within a 250+ range of Cedar City, UT . . . In Utah, Delta, Eureka, Green River, Logan, Park City, Knight . . . In Colorado, Grand Junction, Cortez, Durango . . . Four Corners . . . New Mexico, Amalia, Raton . . . Arizona, Mexican Waters, Kayenta, Black Mesa . . . Nevada, Las Vegas, Reno, Elko, Eureka, Calienta . . . most of these places are pretty small, and would probably reference the nearest larger city . . . I would suggest all the cities in the various regions of Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, which are actually few and far between . . .
Whatever you can do would be great! Thank you for your friendship . . .

Re: Project Idea - Social Bookmarking
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 12:48 AMI picked on the idea of posting things about Chris on the web.
I don't know how many of you are familiar with the social bookmarking sites (del.icio.us, digg, StumbleUpon, Newsvine, Permalink, etc.). Each time you view a news article online, you'll notice the page contains options to print, save or SHARE the article. If you click on SHARE, whichever social bookmarking sites are associated with that particular publication are shown. Clicking on any one of them will take you to the login page of that particular social bookmarking site. It also automatically saves the link to the article and the title of the article for you. You may then add notes (short comment about the article for the benefit of other readers) and TAG the article with whatever tags you believe are appropriate.
The social bookmarking sites allow you to create personal networks similar to the way Tribe works. There are differences, though. The links I tag and save are saved to MY BOOKMARKS. Sometimes when I save and tag a link, I notice that others have saved the same link. The sites allow you to see who else has saved the link. You may visit their main bookmark page. If it appears that you share many of the same interests in news or websites, you may add that person to your network. That person's network list will then show you as a FAN of theirs. It is irrelevant if the person decides to reciprocate and add you to their network.
As you develop a NETWORK, when you log in to the site, and click on YOUR NETWORK, you'll see all the links that have been saved by the people you've added to your network. This is a great way of finding news items or websites relevant to your interests.
But, I digress...
I've been using del.icio.us since last summer. I THOUGHT I had already bookmarked the FINDCHRIS.ORG site, but apparently I hadn't. So, I've spent an hour or so bookmarking all news articles about Chris's disappearance to that site. Now, if anyone goes to the del.icio.us site and searches for info about Chris, the sites I bookmarked MAY come up. Remember, you're using a search engine. The hits you get will depend entirely on what words you chose to base your search on. The sites concerning Chris I tagged with the following tags:
- Christopher_Robin_Coan
- find_Chris
- missing_children
Anyone is welcome to visit my page on del.icio.us. You may simply view my bookmarks, view those in my network or add me to your network. All users are only identified by the usernames they choose. There are no profile pages on del.icio.us (unlike Facebook). I included a link to my tribe profile page as a self-identifier. Doing that is optional. My page on del.icio.us is located at: del.icio.us/torrid_wind.
It turns out that aside from actual news stories, there are many references to Chris on the web. Go to Google and type in "Christopher Robin Coan" (use the quotes). I got THREE PAGES of hits. Any blog about Chris's disappearance (using his full name) comes up along with news items.
********************
Bonnie - if you know what username(s) Chris used online, doing a Google search will bring up any mention of that/those particular usernames. -

Tue, March 11, 2008 - 5:00 PMI am taking a much needed break from work and all, but will look into all this more in a few days . . . Fooley Cooley was one of his user ID, but it is also a rock band . . . there is probably a lot of clue on his Myspace . . .
Torrid, I don't what I would do with out friends like you, Jon and Kristen . . . thank you so much for your support . . .

Re: Project Idea - Social Bookmarking
Wed, March 12, 2008 - 6:28 AMBonnie - Take all the time you need. Those of us who are committed to helping find Chris will each get the word out and help raise funds.
I appreciate your warm words, but no thanks are required. I'm only doing what I believe anyone would do when the child of a neighbor goes missing. I'm motivated to help you, Chris and the rest of your family in any way that I can. I'm a bit OUTRAGED that the authorities aren't doing more. But, this is something the rest of us can help change.
***************
Now - Jon, Kristen and everyone else:
I found Chris's page on MySpace. It's: www.myspace.com/fearandloa...inlasvegas. One OBVIOUS sign that Chris didn't just leave of his own accord (just because he's 18) is that his MySpace page shows he last logged in on Sept 3, 2007. Pointing some of this information out to Chris's representatives in Congress and in the state legislature is something that can be used to lean on local, state and federal authorities to DO THEIR JOBS!
If the Congressional representatives have already been contacted and failed to be helpful, an e-petition might help. Lately, national advocacy organizations (like MoveOn) have used e-petitions effectively to allow the voice of the American people to be heard on national issues. If the state senators fail to get the FBI moving on this case after being presented with an e-petition, this is something that can be pointed out immediately to the news media. Elected officials failing to take action after a considerable number of people have requested them to do so in writing is NEWSWORTHY.
*********
There is another vital component to SOCIAL BOOKMARKING that I forgot to mention in my last post. The more members of each social bookmarking site that save a particular link, the more prominent the placement will be of recent activity on the site. Of the five or six links regarding the search to find Chris that I saved to del.icio.us, so far, NO ONE ELSE HAS SAVED THOSE LINKS. All that is required is registering with the site, going to my page, del.icio.us/torrid_wind and clicking SAVE on each link regarding Chris.
This may or may not be a helpful way to bring attention to Chris's case, but it's FREE and we have nothing to lose.
Keep your chins up, everyone. :-)

my Dad passed in 2000 and it wrecked me completely for two months.

Torrid - thanks for posting all that. Don't mean to expose my lack of internet skills...I get what you are saying generally, but I really could not figure out exactly how to do that myself.
is there some kind of "help" feature on the site that could guide me through?
thanks

Re: Project Idea - Social Bookmarking
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 12:59 AMJon - It was my extensive explanation of what "social bookmarking" and how the sites generally operate that has probably made you believe that there is anything complicated about using the sites.
Yes, del.icio.us has an extensive HELP section with links to answers to basic (including "How to start") to advanced questions. In fact, no one here has to USE the site, however simply registering with the site, then entering Christopher_Robin_Coan will bring up all the links I saved. Then just click SAVE next to each of the five or six links. Just by a few members of this group (and Chris's friends) doing this will bring up those links when regular users search for what links have been recently added to the site.
Registering with del.icio.us is much more simple than registering with Tribe (and completing a profile page). Just registering and saving the links about Chris shouldn't take you more than ten minutes.
Don't worry. :-) -

Re: Project Idea - Social Bookmarking
Sun, March 16, 2008 - 9:55 AMGreat! I just saved you to my network also. Now, to find and save the other sites I posted about Chris, you may either use the search engine atop the page and enter Christopher_Robin_Coan or just visit my page and scan down the list of all my TAGS to find Christopher_Robin_Coan (then click on it). Either way, your search results will only have the five or six links I saved about chris, then just click SAVE next to each one.
Thanks for helping me to see if our use of this site will result in wider awareness about Chris (and help from unexpected sources).
You're like a brother to me, Jon (unlike my biological brother, but that's another story...). Brothers/Sisters aren't always born of the same biological parents. It's LOVE that makes a family. I appreciate you.
