Double life...

I know all you guys feel this way - a burner or entertainer usually has their everyday life and costumed alter ego. It seems so surreal sometimes. I wake up in the morning and do the mommy thing...run the dogs, nag my child about the time, fix lunches, etc. Then I do the secretary thing...actually to be more specific because it is even stranger...the Executive Secretary to the Director of Law Enforcement for Conservation Police for the entire state of Virginia. I have to look and act nice, courteous, professional and yes - conservative. And then on occassion like this past Friday I have to leave work early, come home and spend two hours putting in dayglo yellow hair extensions made out of fireproofed cotton rope and drag my butt up to DC to perform two completely different skits for Flights of Fire (a sold out show by the way). First is to the song "Killer" by the Bug where I am a matrix-like, google-wearing, raver-looking staff spinner who scares and chases a bubbly Malibu off the stage, followed by a lighthearted, elegant Van Morrison's "Moondance" with triple fire poi under a blacklight moon that my daughter helped me make. Then back to Richmond to cheer Montana on in her swim meet that began 8:00 am on Saturday morning. After the swim meet I pile myself into my 250,000 mile Civic and drive back to DC to perform with SilverRaven at another event for a Conference at a DC Marriott. Alongside silk aerialists, jugglers, tightrope walkers, stilters and ballroom dancers we danced the night away with glow poi, flags, LED hoops, fire poi and fire fans. I am once again transformed into a blue dreadfall-decorated cirque-like entertainer. It is not over yet. I drag off the couch at 7:30 the next morning and drive back to Richmond to my daughter's elementary school to meet her (it was her weekend with the ex-) and 3 of her best friends to help them choreograph their hoop troupe for her school talent show. Afterwards I meet up with a friend at my house to discuss the upcoming weekend's choreographed piece for the Snowball event at G5. Afterwards I melt into the couch and watch 5 episodes of Season 1 of HBO's Rome. I end my weekend by transforming yet again to sister/daughter by meeting my other sister and mom for a delicious dinner and then CRASH! The morning begins again...where am I? Oh yeah, not the costume closet, the secretary closet - silly. Keep it straight.

Chris Bailey Poi Workshop!!!

Well folks... we have a special treat for you all!!

Chris Bailey is coming to our home town, in Virginia Beach, Va. He will be doing a workshop here for all who are interested. Prices and other details are still being worked out! We will try to make it reasonable for everyone.(hopefully between $15 and $20 a person) The workshop is being held on March 15th 2008.... We have a HUGE space for this event. It will be held in a cheerleading gym..... tons of rooms... high ceilings... multiple floors. We will have a blast I'm sure. We are inviting everyone who is interested... bring your friends... Past, Present and Future

Howdy, Howdy!

I have to say that my 41st birthday was a blast. Silver Raven and I performed for Carl Cox at FUR Nightclub. We costumed up as toxic chickas and man did we glow. As if dancing through the night wasn't cool enough, we actually got paid to do it. And, I have to say, as women in our 40's we kicked the 20 year old's asses! Just sayin...

Got some goodies coming up. On Thursday I will be performing for Flights of Fire at the Palace of Wonders in D.C. I have two skits and I must say that an upper I am not. One I will be in a straight jacket and the other I am a prisoner wrapped up in chains. I spent yesterday running through the woods with a prom dress on trying to mess it up for the prisoner one. I have to say that if I ever get lost in the woods - I hope I'm wearing taffeta! That stuff is tough!

Saturday night is Tom Doland's brainchild...SPIRAL. A collection of artists of all types performing for one night at Alley Katz in the Bottom. There will be a fire show in the alley created by Lil Spit (where my dramatic skills will be pushed way beyond any place I've ever gone before) and then I have a fire set inside with you guessed it...chains. My Palace skit is a test run for SPIRAL. Again, pushing my drama skills to the limit.

I'm nervous and trying not to wish it was all over but that is only because I am pushing myself beyond my comfort zone. Hope some of you can attend!

breaking the silence...

Well seems as though I have been very silent here on my own tribe so I thought it was time to update on the fire happenings. Not much going on with Fire-flo but I have been very busy working with so many different groups that it seems that just being Cari is hard enough to manage.

First, I have been busting my butt for Flights of Fire up in D.C. So many wonderful things have been happening for Silver Raven and her crew. We performed on stage at the Virgin Festival (opening for the Police and Smashing Pumpkins) and even in the rain and 100 plus heat it was great fun. We also have been putting on a kickass fire show at the Palace of Wonders in D.C. It is a tight space where we each put on 3-4 choreographed/costumed pieces to flame or blacklight. It is so cool to see everyone's creative juices amped way up. Up on the plate is a blacklight peformance for Carl Cox at Buzz. Yeah man, did I say Silver Raven rocks!

And Richmond scene...let's see. Richmond really stepped up their game at the last Gallery 5 event. G5 Fire put on a show for a very large, traffic stopping crowd. I worked with Ignytor and Cway on a fire interpretation of Phantom of the Opera. I hope we get to use it again. Working with them went so well that there is talk of a new name...Fire Arati. I've also been working for Versifyre which included trips to Earthdance in Virginia Beach, Nostalgiafest in Petersburg and a Luau here in Richmond. On the horizon I will be performing for Lil Spit at Spiral on Nov. 10. Fire in the alley is a surprise presentation of fire theater from the deep and twisted mind of Lil Spit. I also have planned an interesting, hopefully uncomfortably edgy performance inside with the help of FreeFall.

Next year there is already in the works fire for Henrico County Park and Recs and a performance for the International Search and Rescue Conference in Appomattox.

So whether it is Flights of Fire, Fire Arati, G5 Fire, Versifyre, Fire-flo...one thing stays same...Cari.

Here is a rare opportunity to learn from one of the greats in the poi world. Zan; the author of one of the hottest instructional videos, encyclopoidia, will be in Richmond, VA on march 17th for four hours/two workshops of instruction and fire spinning.

BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE POI TECHNIQUE
This is the tech class you’ve been waiting for. All the moves you’ve wanted to learn, from someone who really knows how to teach. All levels are welcome; the class content is dependent on participant ability, and will be tailored to best suit the group. We’ll learn kicks, shots, and direction changes as stylish transitions between patterns. We’ll work on starting to use the spaces behind-the-back and under-the-legs with simple patterns and drills. Finally, Flowers and Planar Rotation will be introduced with easy to grasp examples. Focus will be put on getting 1-on-1 coaching for each person to correct the subtleties of technique.
INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED POI TEACHNIQUE
Feeling like you need some new ideas in your poi swinging? This workshop is for you. If you’re already comfortable with a variety of patterns, this will take your spinning to a new level. We’ll work on some new concepts like shots, meltdowns (the most versatile group in the waistwrap family), and going beyond the behind-the-back weave. Time permitting, the class will move into tangles, wraps, anti-spin, more advanced flowers, and dodging daggers based on group preference. You DON’T have to be an expert already to learn these moves. Focus will be put on getting 1-on-1 coaching for each person to correct the subtleties of technique. You won’t be disappointed by this workshop and the new doors it opens for you.

First class starts at 1:30pm and lasts until 3:30pm (beginner/intermediate)
30 minutes in-between the two classes for foodage (byof), rest, stretching, and hanging out.
Second class starts at 4pm and lasts until 6pm(intermediate/advanced)
With spin jam afterwards

$25 each, or $40 for both workshops

Zan workshop in Richmond March 17

Alrighty folks, it's time for another kickass weekend of spinning. Zan from Encylopoidia is teaching a workshop in Richmond on March 17. If you haven't seen him spin, check out the videos on www.instrumentsofthenow.com .

He will be teaching a beginner/intermediate workshop and an intermediate/advanced workshop. This is a great opportunity to learn new moves and polish up your technique. Zan is an amazing spinner as well as an excellent teacher, so this workshop will have a lot to offer for spinners of all skill levels.

I'll make another post in a couple days with the location, time, and price.

I want to thank everyone involved with helping Fire-flo set the tone for Amaranth at the Grace Street Theater. You guys kicked ass and really stepped up to the plate wearing white and coming to safety on nights that weren't your designated night. Daniel, Chris, Lucas, MB, Danny and Alicia - you guys are awesome! And I have to say that watching you guys spin dressed in white tops was such a welcome change to the dark brooding black often sported by fire spinners. So hold onto those white shirts!

Free Fire Safety Workshop at The Blue House

I will be going over everything from fuel safety to clothing safety. I will also go over some of the other hazards of fire performance. Amaranth on fire at the Grace Street Theater!

Amaranth (www.amarantharts.com) and VCU Dance are putting on a show at the Grace Street Theater on Thursday (11/30), Friday (12/1), Saturday (12/06) starting at 8 p.m. They have asked for fire on the outside to greet the patrons on their way in from 7:30-8:00. So come on out for fire and dance. Tickets are $20.

The performers that gathered under Ignytor's trident as Versifyre for Spiral V will be lighting up Grace Street. Here's the lineup joining me...

Thursday: Ember and Daniel

Just to bring you up to speed...

Back in May 2006 I left River City Burners as most of you already know due to relationship issues with my ex. Since then I have created another fire entity called Fire-flo and have decided to be very flexible in how to use it. It is not a troupe.... let me say that again...it is not a troupe. There is only me. I provide a service to my client where upon I create shows to meet their needs. I will pull insured fire spinners from anywhere and everywhere to meet those needs. If you are insured and I need you I will use you. I will be using this site to post upcoming events and even to ask for interested performers for events.

So let's go kick some fire butt and bring this city to its knees!
