Spinagogue is a weekend intensive designed to radically improve your skills while immersing you in Bay Area fire scenery: 28 workshops, three days of food, dinners are prepared by our master vegan chef Joshua the Traveling Chef (joshuaploeg.blogspot.com/), a fire jam and a special sneak preview performance by the Vulcan Crew.

The Vulcan is a hotbed of fire arts located in the heart of "lovely" industrial East Oakland. In addition to hosting the east bay's best and brightest spin jam, the Vulcan is home to over 100 local performers and artisans of all types. Five workshop spaces and living areas inside the Vulcan will host our festivities. Free lodging (sorry, just couches) will be available Friday through Sunday for participants from outside the bay area. Additionally, hotels are available locally starting at about $45 a night.

There are two choices for participation:

1.) Immerse yourself for the full weekend intensive and choose from ANY of the available classes.

The full weekend cost $180 including food, 7 workshops of your choice and that warm, cuddly feeling in your tummy. An $80 non-refundable deposit will be required to register.

2.) Drop in for a few classes of your choice from our list of prescheduled classes.

The drop-in classes will be $30 for a single class, however if you take more than one all classes are $25 each. Meals not provided. Payment must be received before your spot is secured.

Please Note: In order to limit class size, registration will be capped at 25 full weekend participants and about 10 drop in students per class, first come first serve so register EARLY!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

**Friday March 21st Meet, Greet and Eat.

We begin the weekend with a welcome dinner at the Vulcan. There will be three amazing vegan meals prepared for us by TheTravelingChef over the weekend which are all included in the full weekend ticket price. Dinner will begin promptly at 7pm.

Afterwards, stay and spin. Spinagogue instructors will be on hand to assess your spinning progress, help you set goals for the weekend and finalize class selection.

**Saturday the 10th: Workshops, workshops, workshops, PARTY!

Workshops begin at 11am and run till 7pm. Breakfast and stretching at 10am, lunch at 2:30pm, dinner at 7:30pm. Saturday night the Vulcan Crew – composed of several of the Spinagogue Instructors – will preview their works in progress that they will perform at events including the European Juggling Convention in Germany, the Play Festival in England and the Burning Man Conclave while we get fed and then get funky with a full flock of fiery friends. Other events that night to be announced.

**Sunday the 11th: Workshops, dinner, fire.

Workshops begin at 11am and run till 5pm. Breakfast and stretching at 10am, lunch at 2:30pm, dinner at 7:00pm and…
8:30pm-11pm FIRE JAM. After dinner we'll be headed out to NIMBY for a goodbye spin at one of the bay area's premier fire arts warehouses.

The following scheduled workshops are available for drop-in students, $30 for a single class, if you take more than one all the classes are $25. Class sizes are limited so register as soon as possible.

Full weekend students can select from any of the classes whether they are currently scheduled or not. As people register the schedule will be created according to the early registrants’ preferences… SO REGISTER EARLY!!!

Learn to spin poi the easy way: by understanding how poi works. This class is built around a series of simple exercises designed to teach you more than just tricks. By exploring how a few simple tricks relate to one another, an understanding of poi emerges that will make future learning easier.

Intermediate/Advanced Poi I - Noel Yee

Want to learn how do isolations and antispins? Know how to do them but not sure where to go next? This class will focus on practicing the basic isolations and antispins and then utilizing them to execute new and exciting techniques. These techniques include but are limited to: linear isolations, linear extensions, cat eyes and antispin triangles.

Beginning Poi – Jordan Campbell

This class will cover several of the fundamental types of motion used in poi spinning. After taking it you will have a deeper understanding of timing and direction as well as an arsenal of tricks that you can combine and modify to transform you from a novice spinner to a poi master.

Beginning Partner Poi - Silence and Ayala, of FLUX
An introductory level class covering technical moves and choreography in relation to poi duets. Technical emphasis will be on two-person interactive moves, rather than simultaneous moves. How to choreograph a routine from scratch will also be discussed. Bring a partner or find one in class.

Intermediate/Advanced Poi II - Ian Smith

This class will concentrate on the simpler things in poi: 2 beat weaves, stalls, pendulums, spinning in together time, same direction. You will learn that because of their simplicity they have the most variation possibilities and some of the variations can be quite difficult. We will also touch on the relationship between the poi and your body.

Staff

Beginning/Intermediate staff – Krissy Humphreys

Come learn staff fundamentals in this introductory class. We will cover beats, planes, basic passing and transfers while learning exciting moves including the fountain and chopper. No previous staff experience is required.

Intermediate/Advanced Staff Spinning– Ian Smith

In this class is designed to fill out technique: we will take a quick tour through different ways to pass the staff from hand to hand, work on some pendulums and non-linear planes and then learn technique that uses the body like learning to use your body as a lever to move the staff and how to use the momentum of the staff to initiate body movement.

Beginning Staff – Jordan Campbell

Explore various types of staff movement, develop technique to control the staff and learn to move your body in graceful unison with the staff. After this class you will be able to spin confidently in a variety of ways and will have a clear understanding of how a staff moves and how you must move with the staff.

Dance Dance Information - Katherine Tesch
A staff can make a great dance partner. Explore staff manipulation from a dance based perspective with an emphasis on integrating body and prop.

Beginning Contact Staff – Krissy Humphreys

An introduction to contact staff manipulation with an emphasis on further learning. This class will take you through the basics of wrapping, rolling and spiraling with a staff. Hand, elbow, shoulder and neck wraps; halos and backside spirals.

Adv Contact Staff - Advanced Explorations in Contact Staff – Noel Yee

Come learn the latest advances in contact staff! Take the contact staff technique you already know and apply them in resourceful new ways. This class will focus on the use of spirals, wraps and rolls to move the staff to the less explored parts of the body, even the legs.

Doubles Staffs

Beginning/Intermediate Double Staff - Krissy Humphreys

This class is designed for beginners and will cover basic double staff technique while introducing planes, beats, timing and direction. No previous double staff experience is required.

Intermediate/Advanced Double Staff - Greg Maldonado
Learn how to create a variety of patterns and effects with two staffs by combining many different types of motion into your tricks. Beginning with an understanding of how we can move one staff, we quickly progress to two staff exercises designed to open the doors to what is called "hybrid" technique.

Beginning Double Staves – Jordan Campbell

Learn double staff from the ground up in this class designed for the beginner. After a thorough examination of the myriad ways to manipulate a staff we begin combining techniques to seamlessly integrate a second staff.

Advanced Double Staff - Krissy Humphreys

Explore further into the world of double staff manipulation. This class will focus on isolations, anti-spins, hybrids, and how to add finger spinning into our flow. Previous double staff experience is required.

Hoop

Beginner Hoop – Khan Wong
This class introduces students to the fundamentals of hooping, from the first moves every hooper should learn to the principles of establishing a solid hoop practice. We'll start with the basics: hooping on the waist, walking and turning with the hoop and lifting the hoop off the body and getting it back on. From there, passes around the body, vertical hooping and basic hand-hooping technique will be introduced. The class will move on to shoulder hooping and duck-outs depending on participant ability and interest.

Hoop Technique & Flow – Khan Wong
The focus of this workshop is to expand each hooper's range of motion and control. As such, it will not teach moves (though some will be covered) but will instead cover theory and concepts of movement applied to hoop technique. Special attention will be given to hand and body rolling techniques, isolations, antispin applications and direction changes. Participants should be able to transition easily between at least three different moves (it doesn't matter which ones) to get the most out of the class.

Juggling

Beginning Juggling - Jordan Campbell or Bree Crabtree

In this class you will learn the 3 ball cascade – the fundamental building block of juggling patterns – as well as several variations. Everyone can learn how to juggle and the class will be taught in a very simple, sequential manner to ensure that you come out of the class having learned to juggle, guaranteed.

Beginning Contact Juggling - Noel Yee

The ball moves. The ball doesn't move. Come join us in this introductory class that will teach how you to move the ball through space gracefully and then keep it still in visually engaging ways. Close attention will be paid to beginning balancing, isolations and body rolls. No experience required.

Beginning Contact Juggling - Greg Maldonado
Learn how to use the fewest number of the simplest type of prop: one ball. Combining balancing, rolling and spinning to fluidly move a ball across your body, contact juggling will broaden your idea of what juggling can be while deepening your understanding of your relationship with objects.

“Other” Props

Rope Manipulation - Ian Smith

Rope Manipulation… what’s that supposed to mean? It’s everything can do with a jump rope other than jump over it! Poi experience is helpful in this class but not required.

Club Swinging - Poki
Break free from the chains that bind you!
Club swinging bridges the gap between poi and staff -- and will increase you skill in both! You will learn: basic club handling, common poi moves with clubs, odd poi moves with clubs, and some strange looking new club moves.

Beginning Rope Dart – Sam Reese
Learn how to manipulate this most mysterious of props. Half dance half martial arts, rope dart combines beautiful motions with sudden eye catching surprises. Take the first step to mastering this ancient prop.

Beginning Whip Cracking - Mushashi or Elias

Learn to use the loudest, and the most dangerous prop of them all. Safety glasses are required, please try to bring your own, we will have a limited number to loan out. This workshop will teach you the basic cracks and the importance of finesse.

Everyone keeps asking me about practice this week... I almost detect some enthusiasm.

I'm up for a couple days this week, getting the last practice in for that upcoming gig. Mia and I need to finish our duet(s). We're all curious about how dani is doing with the eating and fleshing (I'll bring a vid camera so she can see herself, make any adjustments). I suggest that we do some afternoon-early evening practice, before it get too cold. I'd up for tonight, tues, or weds (not all, though), and I'll likely make the plaza thursday late.

Fire dancers, Ferraris, champagne and more await you at a party unlike anything you have ever experienced at the Crocker. Neo-Crocker will serve as the last major onsite event until construction is complete and the New Crocker opens in 2010.

Activities throughout the evening will be held in the Museum Courtyard and the gallery and office space that has been emptied in preparation of demolition of the Herold Wing. Non-Conclave performances at BM

So there have been some posts (I saw brian respond to one of the firedrums tribe) soliciting troupes or groups of spinners for set spins at various events at burning man. Are we interested in doing any of these, in whole or in part of the group?

I've spoken with the people in charge of the opulent temple, they are quite enthusiastic, and I also was talked to by the person who runs the stage at spike's. There is also the Wednesday jam, that was formerly at the hookadome, and now I believe will be near DDI.

I guess the issue is if we want to commit to being somewhere at a certain time, or not. I might be up for something, last year I ended up free spinning every single night, but non-sobriety might also be a concern. Thoughts?

Duv's and Sleeves

Duv's will be $4 a yard. I have 8 yards for sale currently (saving two for meeself!). Cash/check/ass, please.

Sleeves have been shipped, shipping was $2 per item, which is still mega cheap.
(2footsleeves = $9 total and 14" = $6 total now) Same payment preferences apply.

I assume that I'll get these things in a week or two, and I'll make at least one trip to Oak-town for spin-jam and be able to get everything to Berkeley people that way.

Also, anyone with a pattern for a panda-suit, call me. I now have fabric.

I'm ordering duvs and kevlar sleeves (possibly gloves too if Silence mandates it). ALL BLACK!

I found a site that sells it for $2 a yard if you buy 10 yards. I think I might just do this. Then everyone can have a duv and an extra or something like that. I'd prefer to have more than less. It says commando cloth is $3 a yard for 10 yards...is there any difference other than weight?

Let me know if you want some. Just tell me what you want and I'll order it and "bill you" when I get it. Shipping will be divided among everyone who orders so it should be super cheap. Dani, if you want to trade Ace fuel for goods, we can do that tooooooo!

Any member who wishes to purchase a discount ticket may do so for
$145 on the following conditions:
• In good standing with he Fire Conclave. If in years past they
received a ticket (gift or purchase) and never signed in they may not
take advantage of this.
• If they have already purchased a tickets they may not take
advantage of the above tickets.
• For those that are new member to the Fire Conclave they will NOT
be eligible for gift tickets. But will be eligible for discount tickets.

The price of this tickets is good until July 31, BUT PLEASE DO NOT WAIT.

• REAL NAME - the one on your state issued photo ID (ONLY if you are
receiving the ticket from me).
• AKA OTHER NAME - the name you gave yourself

TICKET REQUEST PROCESS
Once I receive the completed membership list, the information will be
placed in the web based Ticket System. An email will automatically be
sent to the email address of the individual receiving the ticket (IF
an email address was submitted), giving directions for payment.
Payment may be made by clicking the link provided in that email. Of
course what we are finding is that sometimes this email looks like
SPAM. Regardless of what happens to the email the request will be in
the system for reference at Will Call, located at the Gate of Black
Rock City.

• NO TICKETS WILL BE MAILED. ALL TICKETS WILL BE PICKED UP AT WILL
CALL, AT THE GATE OF BLACK ROCK CITY. When picking up a ticket at
Will Call, both discount and gift, the person must show their photo
ID that corresponds to the name the ticket is held under.

• CONFIRMATION - IF an email address has been supplied then an email
will be sent.

• TICKET PAYMENT - Can be made as soon as the recipient gets the
email with instructions to paying on-line using Credit Card or Pay

PLAYA ACTIVITIES
SIGN IN PROCESS @ FIRE CONCLAVE CONVERGENCE
Each person within the Fire Conclave who will be dancing in the Great
Circle will need to Sign In @ Fire Conclave Convergence. And there
are three different Check in Books:

• MAIN CHECK IN; of which all above information about each group
will go. Each person will be listed by their AKA
• AMBIENT DRUMMERS; these are drummers that do not go with any one
group but will be placed around the Great Circle to add beat to your
dance.
• OPTIONAL; THIS IS FOR

As important as it is being a member of the Fire Conclave it is
incredibly important that each member sign in. IF any member of a
group does not sign in, then that person will NOT be allowed into the
Great Circle.

IF A SHIN DOES NOT SHOW UP FOR THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES THEY AND THE
GROUP WILL NOT BE ALLOWED INTO THE GREAT CIRCLE. This seems silly,
but last year a couple of the Shins never showed up. I ask so little
of all members of the Fire Conclave that I requests simple guidelines
be followed.

FIRE CONCLAVE CONVERGENCE - NEW LOCATION THIS YEAR - Once I know of
the location will let you know. Check in hours: Monday (8/27) -
Friday (8/31) 10 AM - 6 PM
You snooze you loose. Please do not complain that someone did not
make it to check in and that they really need to be dancing in the

a disaster

So I'm in the Bay Area, have been since Thursday, everything is going well until yesterday. Looking for housing, getting lost on the millions of street and highway junctions when I come across that I have no wallet anymore.

Right now I'm in the Crosstown Cafe on High Street. I have to thank Noel for telling me about this place, and I have no clue what to do. I have about $16 on me and I need that to get gas to go see all 3 places, and still have enough money to get home. This is going to be interesting how this one is going to be pulled off. I just hope I find my wallet. Cause i don't I'm don't know what i'm going to do.

This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I shall be performing a role in the production of Cinderella. It would awesome to see some of you guys there but if you don't come that's all good too. I think you might be a little freaked out by the role I play.

This week we'll finally be done with our conclave submission. With any luck, we'll hear back soon about our acceptance.

Until then, we have the standard couple practices, which are:

Tuesday- Davis farmer's market, after dark. Before that I'll be helping megan make a staff, in anyone else needs propwork.
Weds- Vulcan in oakand. Always a good time, likely a viewing of the finished submission.
Thurdsay- E street plaza. I'll show up this time, promise.
Sunday- Nimby in OAK, I really should do this more often (quite fun last night, until dooze broke 2piR).

safety meeting

Megan is going to be in charge of our safeties (at least the ones up in the davis-sac area), and has scheduled a meeting for thursday at 8:00 at froggy's bar in davis (G and 2nd). Everyone I've spoken with about being safety or helmsman (Jenn, Mike, Liz, and Dani) said they could make thrusday, so I'll assume everyone can do 8. Topics discussed will be expectations and requirements for the conclave, issues relating to practices, the night of the burn, and there will be some talk about costumes.

This week in flux...

All the video submissions are in, and sam and Brian are working on getting a conclave submission video together. There are a couple other things that need to go with the submission, such as everyone's contact info (which I only have from the core flux people), and a plan for the set. I'll be headed down to the vulcan a bit early this Wednesday to discuss our set with Elias, anyone else who would like to participate in these discussions should let us know and do so. Also, if anyone has pictures of costume or parts or costumes, photos of those can also be included in the submission (you'll remember we agreed on at least being color consistent, so costumes should be combinations of earth tones and black, or just earth tones, which seriously, should be pretty easy to get something along those lines).
Also, we need go get the safety situation dealt with... we should try to have all of them (at least, the ones from our core group) meet up so we can talk about expectations and requirements (it is a $130 ticket discount, after all). Would some time this week work for people?

As for things going on this week...

Tuesday, at the davis farmer's market. With any luck it'll be less than 90 by the time we light up.

Wednesday I'll be going down to the vulcan, if people need rides please post, but we will be leaving for oakland early.

Thursday, fire on the E street plaza in davis.

Friday, a dubstep show in SF that several people might be into...

Last chance for the conclave...

So this is it. The last filming opportunity if you'd like to be in the conclave. The majority of you have already filmed and submitted footage (to brian or to sam), and for that I thank you. For those of you who still want to get something it, the deadline is tomorrow night, and that means in brian or sam's hands and in a readable format (pretty much anything non-mac). I will be in davis tonight and oakland tomorrow, so I can transport video if that would help anyone. People will also need to get your contact information to me (stage and real name, email), that can wait a week more if it has to, but the sooner the better. I know this has been a long process, but it isn't done yet. In advance, thanks to brian and sam for sharing their editing skills on this. Along with the submission we need a written plan for our performance. After we get a chance to see who our final performers are, and what they have done, we can put that together. Once all that is done we will submit to crimson... I expect we will get in, as we have some serious talent.

Next will come decided on and making costumes, and further practicing. It had been suggested that we try to get everyone together for a show/party/practice/whatever. Perhaps we could take it out to a beach or something, just to try to get (almost) everyone together, try to work together in a 25 minute window, maybe try to get some big piece together (poi had been mentioned, or contact staff). Regardless of what we do, we should try to have a least one fire practice at some point (even if it is on the playa some off-night), and I'd like the safeties to participate in the practice/practices.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for getting so far. Just a bit more...

poi workshop next month in oakland, July 13th-15th

Spinagogue is a weekend poi intensive designed to radically improve your poi skill while immersing you in Bay Area fire scenery: 12 workshops, 4 catered meals plus snacks, a fire jam at NIMBY and a trip to the Crucible's Fire Arts Festival.

The Vulcan is a hotbed of fire arts located in the heart of "lovely" industrial East Oakland. In addition to hosting the east bay's best and brightest spin jam, the Vulcan is home to over 75 local performers and artisans of all types. Three workshop spaces and two living areas inside the Vulcan will host our festivities. Free Lodging (sorry, just couches) will be available Friday through Sunday for participants from outside the bay area. Additionally, hotels are available locally at about $70 a night.

The weekend costs $160 including food, workshops and fun, including a $60 non-refundable deposit. The Crucible Fire Arts Festival is an additional optional $40 ticket.

Please Note: In order to limit class size, registration will be capped at 10 participants, 5 beginner and 5 intermediate.

Beginner: You have learned several tricks and spent the time to become comfortable with them. A 90 min practice session does not sound overwhelming.

Intermediate: You are comfortable with a wide variety of basics and have experimented with some of the following: isolations, stalls, pendulums, polyrhythm, anti-spin, atomics, tosses, etc.

We begin the weekend with a welcome dinner at the Vulcan. There will be four amazing vegan meals prepared for us over the weekend which are all included in the ticket price. Dinner will begin promptly at 5pm.

At 7pm we will be heading out to The Crucible Fire Arts Festival (July 12th-14th).

Here, you will see artists who work with fire, taming and shaping this wild element. Flames flicker on the antlers worn by stiltwalking performers; dancers spin flaming balls and hoops of fire. The beginners' class will cover planes, timing and direction, weaves, butterflies, corkscrews, pinwheels and lockouts. Emphasis will be placed on ensuring that students have a solid grasp of tricks from every category.

An introductory level class covering technical moves and choreography in relation to poi duets. Technical emphasis will be on two-person interactive moves, rather than simultaneous moves. How to choreograph a routine from scratch will also be discussed. Bring a partner or find one in class.

Ian Smith: Poi Dance for Everybody

You move your poi... have you ever let your poi move you? Join Ian to explore some ideas about how body movement can influence your poi and vice versa.

Ian Smith: Spin from the Hip

This class is all about the pretty under-curve that the wrist does when transitioning at the hip. We will examine underutilized and less complicated versions of moves you probably already know, like the 2-beat weave, as well as some new techniques. Using the hip transition can make the same pattern look completely different, and the audience will notice the difference between the 3-beat and 5-beat weave.

Greg Maldonado: Timing and Direction (aka The Best Shoulder Workout Ever)

This class is an in-depth look at timing and direction. Emphasis will be placed on learning the look and feel of the four primary combinations of timing and direction with poi. Exercises designed to extend your range of control with each of these combinations will be taught.

This week, june 4th-10th

This is it... the last week to finish filming for the conclave. Everything needs to been in a digital format, on a CD/DVD/flash, and in Sam or Brian's hands by sunday. No exceptions.

Again, here are the requirements as outlined by Crimson:
-every performer needs to be filmed in at least on choreographed piece (at least some interaction between two people).
-the piece needs to be done on fire
-costume and presentation are also considered (so don't wear shorts and a T-shirt)

Now this tape can be up to 25 minutes long, but it should be at least 15 (since we can have max 10 minutes of chaos, and we plan to have 2-3 small groups spinning at once during the choreographed portion). Depending on what we end up with, we might only show a minute or two of each piece, if we get a lot of video in, though if we do not we may show entire pieces.

With the submission I will need people's -real- names, as they appear on IDs, and email addresses, for those that would like ticket discounts. Stage names, geographical location, and props used would also be helpful but are not required.

We also will need to include a written description of what our set will look like. For now let us worry about getting filming done. While things are being edited we can discuss this, keep it in mind though. Basically, we have 25 minutes at the burn, some portion of which is choreography, some of which is chaos (15/10 is pretty common). When we see what we have on the tape we can discuss the composition and length of the choreographed section. Group costume will also be dealt with later, though earlier what had been discussed were earthtone colors (with or without black hi-lights), since that would be keeping with the theme and very easy for most people to do (and at least semi-match).

We will be filming tuesday and thursday in davis, locations to be decided. I'll update when I have more information (later today hopefully). For those of you who do not have a camera, thursday should be thought of as the last opportunity to get things taped (we also filmed last sunday and thursday).

You don't want to get an earful from Sam about this so...
Get your RAW FOOTAGE to me, Matt or Sam before the 12th. If you film on Sunday the 9th, you have a couple days to hand-deliver, mail or teleport the footage to the editors.
That is if you want to spin in the conclave. Otherwise you'll be a great safety.
A wrap and/or viewing party should be scheduled after the first. It's tradition, folks, and outta my hands.

as for the weekend, I know Sam and Josie have some DDI action, and there was talk of filming or beaches... I'm up to do saturday at the beach, but I'm pretty neutral on it. Other thoughts on filming?

So we're getting pretty close to when we need to have our submissions filmed for the Conclave, I'd suggest we make a real effort at that starting next week... which would make this the time to finish all that choreography and so forth.

Pretty standard weekly events, those being:

Tuesday: Davis farmer's market Practice. This time, with 50% less blacking out. Hopefully we can get some practice in, and maybe do a bit less drinking. Last week was a bit of a record- 2x30 packs of beer, 1 bottle of wild turkey, and 5 gallons of white gas.

Weds- Spinjam in oakland, as always. I might be up to drive down if any davis kids want to pool.

Thurs- E street plaza spinjam. Anyone up to practice beforehand?

Am I missing anything?

Filming...

So my father last night, filmed the entirety of our performance. Not very well though. He likes to zoom a lot and he through in some strobe effects that we could have done without, but I think we do have some salvageable pieces we could edit together. Unfortunately I dont know how to post on you tube. Maybe someone can help?....
If none of the footage is usable I will just bring the recorder to a practice when we are together again and record it myself. Or if anyone else is savvy feel free to pipe up.
