I am making fire fans and have a few ideas on how to attach the wick to the fans, but would love some advice from people who have done this before. I prefer the fans with 5 wicks rather than one long flame. If there is anyone willing to share a method I would appreciate it so much! I searched for links on how to make fire fans and did not find any, if one exists please post.
Gracias!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: how to attach wick to fans?
Sun, July 13, 2008 - 4:31 PMThe NAFAA requires a "hard limiting" method for attachment. In the strictest sense, this could be interpreted as:
Make a loop in the metal where you want the wick to be
Weld or twist the metal together
wrap wick around the loop
Insert a screw/bolt through the wick, through the loop, and out the back
Affix the bolt so there's no chance of accidental removal.
Done.
The bolt limits every layer of kevlar preventing a chinese yoyo from happening and has a metal-to-metal restraint keeping the wick on the fan. naturally, your construction methods may differ greatly. This method assumes you're putting it together with armature wire or something.

Re: how to attach wick to fans?
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 6:13 PMTedward has a cool idea... my fans I've sewn wick onto. Probably not as secure as this other idea but pretty secure since im not throwing them around or anything yet.
I take aluminum tape and stick it on the end of the kevlar and stick to the metal, then wrap the kevlar around, every time it makes a complete circle, i sew with kevlar thread, the layers together, continuing to sew all layer together as the wick builds up.
So far they've been nothing but really solid, especially since once you light them the kevlar seems to shrink onto the metal. However the sewing methods is EXTRAORDINARILY time consuming, 12 wicks took me all day (and then some).
So, go with whatever seems easiest to you to do. Also, make sure to choose a length of wick and cut every one accordingly, I used 11" length on my first fans and they are HUGE. Way too big and always burn me when I use them, the second pair had 8" and are a lot more reasonable. -

Re: how to attach wick to fans?
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 8:58 AMWhat kind of wick did you attach? and how thick?
I am cutting and welding steel rods. I will try welding a ring onto the rod for attaching the wick with a nut and bolt through it.
I love the sound of the aluminum tape and sewing, but don't know how secure that is. How long have you been using yours?
Does the tape kind of weld itself after use, making it safe? Or what?????
Thanks for your input! -

Re: how to attach wick to fans?
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 11:34 AMDepending on the look of your fans, you'll probably go with 1 or 2 inch wide wick and about 1 foot length each wick (depending on thickness).
Aluminum tape isn't necessary, any tape will do so long as you're not depending on it to hold the wick on afterwards. i us scotch tape on my fire fingers and packing tape on my staves. The kevlar protects the tape, so there's little worry about plastic decomposition. (like, 10 years)
And Kevlar thread is fine for low stress jobs like fingers and fans. But it does mean that you have to keep a closer eye on your wicks as they age. -

Re: how to attach wick to fans?
Sun, July 20, 2008 - 10:06 PMI made them, havent lit them! But damn they look sweet and pretty harmless. I used 3 and half in rings and welded maybe 1 and half inside bottom, and cut 10 inch length 3/16 rod and welded 5 , by my artistic eye, instead of getting all anal with measurements and angles, but after I cut each 10 inch piece i threaded an inch or so of the rod. welded them then stuck a10/32 nut on and a lock washer, then folded my 2 by 1/8 wick over and folded it through the threaded rod a couple times(pain in the but) then another lock washer and nut.
Loved it , but next time I think Ill buy from the masters!!!!!!!!!!
but theres a great feelin when you lite your own piece! -

It's good to make your own, but, yeah, the people who make them for a living generally have access to tolls, methods and materials that the average person does not. Plus, most of us (I hope) go through extensive product testing before releasing a tool for public consumption. -
