Okay, just for reference, we're talking about this:
    www.gemologica.com/stainles...2094.html

The trick is that open steel chain mail, isn't really strong enough to safely be poi chains. To make them safe, each link would have to be welded or riveted which would drive the price far above most spinners' means.

thus far, out of the 20-30 spinners i know of using these chains, NOBODY has managed to break a set. other than you, that is. i really believe that if made right, by someone who really knows how, they are stronger than ball chain FOR SURE. i've been spinning mine for a year now daily for about an hour without even a single ring spreading. i could see them possibly needing maintenance (tightening a ring or two once a year) but as always check your tools before you burn, right?

I am a manufacturer and a seller of Byzantine Chain Maille Poi Chains. As soon as my website www.burningpassion.com is fully complete we will be selling them on there.
Chain Maille that is made for poi spinning is made differently than most chain maille jewelery. Special attention and much more effort is put into the detail of closing the rings properly to ensure a perfect set of chain maille is made.
This design has been around for a few years in the Minnesota fire community and there have been no issues at all except for one circumstance from someone who was a beginner that tried to make their own set.
I do NOT recommend anyone trying to craft this themselves.

They are a huge step above ball chain for performance. They are much easier to manipulate skillfully for wraps, hyper loops, orbitals, etc.
I will be promoting it shortly at FireDrums and online after that after getting some surprise amazing performers in our community on film performing with them.

Feel free to contact me if you would like more information.
        Cheers!

To be fair, I was asked to try to break it by hand. I didn't break it through the normal course of use. FWIW, I cannot break #20 steel ball chain over the same length. If Paul or someone else would like to prepare a comparison load test:
#20 steel chain is 150lbs test, which means about a 10lb work load limit (wll = 15x break strength or "test")

Most open link chains and spinners cannot get above 5 lbs wll. But that's still enough to work with poi successfully. I mean, how heavy are your wicks? My death stars are about a pound, plus fuel, no more than 2 lbs. All the extra strength is there to insure that no limits get pushed when you do chain wraps, body wraps or get them snagged on something. Because it's when you get close to the limits that damage starts to happen.
