'Ello!
I've been using this black rubbery stickyish tape for a while on fire staves that works well after it is worn in, but I am looking for something better.
What tried and true ways is there to wrap a staff with tape? What tape do you recommend? What are your experiences with different kinds of grip tape on staves?

THANKS!

I have been doing some testing with silicone tube. So far everyone loves it! Bye Bye grip tape :P

How does the silicone tubing handle the heat? It's only rated for 500 degrees, I believe. I would like to make a set of balance sticks for fire, but can't find the grippy surface for it.

First off I think the type of staff plays a big role---are you going to use it for contact or just traditional staff spinning? I'm not into contact but I know there is a big difference with grips both in thickness and tackiness.

I purely spin traditional staff and I am comfortable with tennis grip tape for the most part. I've used hockey tape in the past but I like the thickness and feel of the tennis grip more. Hockey tape doesn't slip as much in my experience and avoids the annoyance of a wrap flipping over and/or sliding free but the feel doesn't suit me.

I concur. Contact staffing ha a lot more involved in the connection between the stick and the user. For basic staffing, just dealing with sweat well is the only real requirement.

I've been using bicycle "cork", or handlebar grip. fizik makes a great tape that's grippy without being sticky. It's vegan but feels a bit like suede.

I'm going to second the comment about the fizik tape. I've used this on a couple of my staves. it's got a great feel. another one that I think is a little stickier feeling is the Stella Azurra Stitched handle bar tape. It's rubbery rather than suede and is about the same price range. The stickiest thing I've used so far is silicone like StuntManJeff suggested above. (I haven't been able to find the tubing in a diameter that will fit a 1" staff though) - recently I re-gripped an LED staff that I made and wanted to try out the silicone so I just smeared 100% silicone all over the grip area and tried to smooth it out as much as possible. It's been the best thing yet that I've felt for contact and it's cheap... $5 for a tube and you only need a little bit.
