Re: eating
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 6:34 PMDone properly, it's no worse for you than spinning. Unfortunately, there's a lot of bad habits and technique out there, and some of that propaganda DOES apply in some of those cases. Simple rules:
1) Swallow nothing
2) inhale nothing but clean air.
3) don't leave wet fuel laying around.
4) Make sure you have good ventilation.
5) clean up real good immediately after.
We're working with a surgeon in boston to get some better, clinical information, but the process is pretty slow. -

Re: eating
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 10:12 PMWell, that's probably between you and your dentist. But for basic eating, no, not a problem. Torch stands tend to be a little hard on the teeth, but they're not something you do regularly (one would hope) and you definitely shouldn't drink anything cold right after... :)

Re: eating
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 4:26 AMYes, you should worry about the enamel on your teeth. Rinse with at least water after, and brush your teeth and rinse with mouthwash at the end of every night.
Also, if you have crowns or significant fillings, talk to your dentist. The heat can cause them to expand and contract and put extra pressure on the rest of the tooth. I've heard of teeth cracking because of this. -

Wed, August 12, 2009 - 1:04 PMI know some eating-only side show performers who have been doing it 25 years that beg to differ.... full dentures are expensive. -

Re: eating
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 10:02 AMJust had to have a crown and one tooth pulled. That sucked. Even if my dentist is a clown. Between jokes he told me that he wasn't sure if any of my problems were due to eating fire or just a lack of going to the dentist. I have learned that if you are going to eat fire, regular dental checkups and follow through are essential. If I had gone before the tooth started falling apart it would have been much easier and less costly. So, stereotypically speaking, sideshow performers are not exactly known for their oral hygene practices so it would probably be hard to prove that the dentures were caused by fire eating.
